jmcquown - 13 Dec 2005 21:25 GMT Okay, I don't believe in Santa but UPS just delivered a new 17" flat panel monitor to my door. I'm happy! And thank you, LLL, who knows nothing about computers but knows I was having problems with my monitor and knows I have a Dell :)
OB Cats: Persia is hiding in the closet because the UPS gal knocked on the door to have me sign for the delivery.
Jill (whose eyes are still adjusting to the larger screen... gotta check the settings)

These particular monitors only go up to 1280x1024, but that's fine for what I do. More recent models do higher resolution that that.
I've also got a ViewSonic tube-type monitor on the desk, and I much prefer the graphic quality on the LCDs.

Sharper, and less harsh on the eyes.
Of course, it took a bit more getting used to for the cats - no more warm naps on the monitor :D

I have an old, 21" monitor, with a big, flat, back on my desk on one corner and a small 17" TV on the other corner. Since I've been having some problems with my neck I decided to switch the two. Jessie, who likes to sleep on the nice warm monitor, jumped up to her usual cozy spot and immediately slid off the back of the (sloping) TV and landed on the floor with a thud (then preceded to glare at me for a good half an hour when I laughed at her)! ;>

Those days are over.
Jill, you better start believing in Santa, and enjoy :)

I'm not a 'gamer' so I don't much care about graphics (other than your basic stuff) but this appears to be very sharp.

They can also have issues of "ghosting" when things on your screen are moving around a lot, as in some very fast-paced games. I haven't had a problem with that, either. There are also people who claim that they can't use cordless mice because they "slow them down" in the game. *shrug*

Heh, my mom convinced my dad that her old monitor was emitting dangerous radiation that would give her cancer, so he bought her a new Sony LCD. I so want a flat screen monitor. It's funny, DH has the latest, fastest best computer there is for playing his games and I, who make our living on this computer, have one that's 5 years old (that's like stone hammers and flint knives in computer terms)!!!!!
Seriously, you got a good one there, bless LLL's heart - give him some cyber hugs from me for being such a good guy!

FYI, flatpanels specify an "optimum resolution" at which they should be run. Usually, anything outside of that optimum resolution is blurry and not so great.
Most likely, your 17" resolution should be 1280x1024, but it's possible that it's something else. If you mention the model number, I can check for you (or you can on the Dell site).
DH also just replaced my old monitor, which was misbehaving in eye-straining ways. What a difference!

It's not the monitor which is misbehaving, it's my eyes. My eyes have been misbehaving since 1972 when I first got glasses :) I need them to read anything at a foot or more distance.

NMR - 14 Dec 2005 02:32 GMT Is it a liquid screen one if so you can get the program that you can use your screen as a touch screen

I'd like an LCD screen, but, even though the monitor I have now is 7 years old, it works perfectly and I can't justify replacing it.

By flat panel do you mean LCD?
