Some Purrs for Pan, Please

Hi all,

Well, I took Pan to the Vet yesterday for what I thought would be a
basic bloodtest to check his medication levels.  The vet came out of
the back shortly after and said he had Pan on subcutaneous fluid as he
was dehydrated, but also said he feared Pan's kidneys are failing. More
is happening to this cat that just managing his thyroid tumor. Pan did
seem to perk up a bit after his fluids, and I'm waiting to hear from
the vet about the blood test results from yesterday. (Probably won't
hear until this evening, as the results have to come back from the
lab.)

If Pan's kidneys are going, I can't put him through pointless
suffering even though I'm far from ready to say goodbye to him. Like
Marina, I can't put my beloved old companion through a miserable time
just to hold onto him longer.  If he has to go, let his end be gentle.
He too is very thin, these days, and now I understand what Marina meant
about "weariness in his eyes"  when she was referring to Frank. So,
whatever purrs you can spare for my dear old hus-cat will be
appreciated.

Dear Melissa,
Best wishes for you and Pan.
I can't send any purrs as my purrer, Hugo Katt, went to the bridge 2 weeks
ago.
I know so well what you are going through.I hope it will not be too bad.
When I have read about Pan I have always thought that he must look a lot
like my dear Hugo.

Empathetic purrs for an easy, dignified and painless passage for the dear old
guy if it is sadly necessary. Purrs that he has a while yet of quality life
so you can spoil him & prepare for the day of parting.

Lots of purrs for Pan.  Don't panic quite yet.
Although it is true to say I have no experience with kidney disease in cats,
I do have plenty in dogs as most of mine lived to an advanced age in the
late teens and almost all had kidney problems eventually.
These very old dogs were often very thin as the protein they took in via
their food didn't equal the protein they were excreting via their urine.  I
kept them going with a good quality of life on chicken/turkey/rabbit and
white fish for quite a long time.  That was their protein source.  Carbs
were low protein dog biscuits or brown wholemeal bread. Red meat and high
protein kibble is a burden on the kidneys for older animals.

I know I'm a month late on this, but it brought tearsd to my eyes
as I remembered my beautiful Henri and I had to do the same
for him , Its brought more than tears to my eyes now. He was a
big cat of 9 point 3 kilos, and he was down to 5.6, and I dont
think I will ever get over losing him in 2000, we were so close.

Melissa, many purrs for Panther. I understand it's really common
when an older cat is treated for a thyroid problem, that it unmasks
CRF. Chin-up and purrs for both of you!

Signature

Shiral - 14 Dec 2005 01:41 GMT
I hadn't heard that, but in an obscure way, it's a relief to know this
has been a problem for other elderly thyroid case cats. Poor old Pan
definitely looks as if he's seen better days, and his coat does not
look particularly good.  He doesn't seem to be suffering NOW, but cats
are also good at concealing their pain.

Thanks Chery, and thank you everyone for  all the support. It really
does help.  I still haven't heard from the vet, but I imagine there
will be a message from my vet on my answer machine when I get home.

<tears> I'm so sorry that you are having to go through this now, too,
Melissa. Cuddle and pamper him as long as you can. During his final
days, I let Frank eat all sorts of goodies he shouldn't have been eating
any more, and his tummy did get upset, but he still seemed to enjoy his
treats. {{{{Melissa}}}} We're here for you.

Well, My vet's office called this morning and asked me to come in with
Pan and have a talk with the vet. =o\   This is also what he said when
I had to put Izzy to sleep, so I'm afraid things don't look too
promising, here. Usually, Dr. Mell is willing to talk about test
results over the phone. A face to face appointment is a bit worrisome.
Pan has been getting lots of love and treats and I think even the girls
know something is up.  Nina is being especially attentive. Our
appointment is for tomorrow afternoon.  Further updates as events
warrant.

Melissa, I am so sorry to hear this.

Hopefully you will know more when you get the blood results.  If Pan
has Chronic Renal Failure, there IS hope, especially if it is caught
early.  Diet, and possibly fluids, can really make them feel better,
and they can enjoy a good quality of life for anywhere from a few
months to many years after diagnosis, depending on at what stage they
are in.  So don't give up hope yet.

Purring for you and Pan.

Pan Update:

Pan is spending the weekend at the vet's office, during which time the
vet will try to get him rehydrated, and get his kidneys working better.
So the news today was not as dire as it might have been. But his
thyroid is still too high for comfort. I imagine Pan is thinking VERY
unkind thoughts about me right now though.  He growled when I put him
in his carrying case to take him to see TED. I just hope the hydration
will perk him up, again!  I just hope the vet bill won't be too
incredibly huge.

Furballs will keep their purrs going both for Pan and your wallet. At
least he growled when you put him in the carrier. I knew Fugazi was
ready to cross the bridge when she went into her carrier and on arrival
did not attempt the savage the vet!
(When she was spayed they told me they'd had feral toms who gave them a
lot less trouble!)

That's one sign that Frank was ready to go. He'd always regaled me with
his yowling (sorry, Waffles, his 'singing') when I took him to TED's,
but the last time, he didn't say a peep, neither going there or coming home.
