Today was a strange day at our house. We weren't quite sure if we were
having a party or what. Meowmie gave us lots of yummies - poached
chicky-bird and turkeybird, and lots of shrimpies. Stupid Caliban had
never seen shrimpies before, and he didn't know you were supposed to eat
them, so he threw his around and played with it while Frank and I ate
dozens. Anyway, it seemed like a party to me, but still, Meowmie kept
leaking at the eyes, and when stupid Caliban tried to play with old Unca
Frank, she got really mad at him. Unca Frank didn't want to play, even I
could see that, so I went and diverted Caliban's attention while Unca
Frank escaped to the sauna for a nap. He's been napping a lot lately.
Meowmie stayed home today, and in the afternoon, we all curled up on the
bed for a nap. It still seemed like a party to me - what a nice way to
spend the day! Frank was curled up on the pillow next to Meowmie's head
as usual, and Caliban and I did our best to pin Meowmie down by pressing
up against either side of her on top of the blanket. In spite of our
best efforts, she didn't stay long, though. Soon she was up again and
leaking all over the place. I crawled under the blankie to get away from
all the water, but stupid Caliban didn't mind her leaking all over him
and just stretched out his silly spotty tummy for her.
I slept under the blankie all day, so I'm not sure what happened, but I
heard Meowmie sit down on the bed every now and then and hug Unca Frank,
and I heard him and Caliban getting their din-din. I'm a princess, so I
don't eat until late in the evening. Suddenly I heard someone at the
door. I recognized the hoomin who made me sleep a long time ago, and
when I woke up she'd stolen my tummy fur and put an obnoxious thing
Meowmie called a body stocking on me.
This hoomin came into *our* bedroom, she sat down by Frank, and she
stuck a needle into him!. Unca Frank walked around the flat one time,
then he went under the bed and threw up. I went after him, and as I saw
him lay down to sleep, I snuggled up beside him. He smelled funny, and I
wanted to ask him what was going on, but he just slept. Then Meowmie
pulled him out from under the bed, and she and the other hoomin did
something to him on the kitchen table. Then the other hoomin asked
Meowmie something, she nodded and started to leak again.
I was a lttle scared of going near them, but Caliban was there all the
time with his stupid 'Wacha doing? Huh? Huh? Whatsdat? Huh? Huh?
Wazzup?' Meowmie held him and leaked all over him again. Then the other
hoomin put Unca Frank in a box, and then she left, and she took the box
with her!
Meowmie says he's never coming back, and I'm the oldest kitty in the
house now, so I have to act accordingly. She said this after Caliban and
I started to chase the kitchen cabinet greeblings and killing the paper
towel monster. I hope she's wrong and unca Frank comes back soon. I miss
him.

Miranda, I don't think Unca Frank will be coming back. I think he's at the
Rainbow Bridge with Nikki, both healthy and playing, and waiting for
Meowmie, Caliban and you. Don't worry, time is different there, so it won't
seem as long to him as it does here.
They have a reflecting pool there too (I know there's one in the ferret
part) and he can look in it and see what you're all doing. So be nice to
Meowmie, and one day maybe you'll both be as famous as Frank and Nikki were.
Marina, wishing you strength !

My Fritzie was put to sleep two years ago today, and I still have a hole in my
spirit, as much as I love my four babies now.
That day I had to take 6 valium (!) before going to work. I don't remember a
lick of what I did, except it had to do with selling face cream and wearing a
fake smile. Marina, all who mourn with you understand!

When my cat Katie had to be put to sleep a couple of years ago, due to
advanced cancer, the euthanasia was done via a deliberate overdose of
painkiller. She went from conscious to dead in only two or three
seconds.

We have only ever used one needle. Many times not even that as there was
already an IV running.
I've held each and every one of them. Either in my arms or wrapped my arms
around them on the table. And they have just relaxed slowly and totally.

That's what they did with Tribble (for the same reasons) - one
injection, and it was over in seconds.

Yes, he was given a sedative first. Even with that mild sedative, his
breathing became so laboured, it was another confirmation to me that it
was his time to go. Then the vet put in a catheter, asked me if I was
ready, and then started to give him the - I realise now I don't know

Caliban jumped into my lap and I hugged him and cried into his fur. He's

I managed to hold it in until the very last paragraph, but by the end I
too was leaking very badly too.
Cary was busy 'marauding' somewhere in the house when I started to cry,
but he must have heard me blubbering. He wandered out, looked at me
quizzically, and then just climbed into my lap, put his head on my
chest and just hugged me till I'd finished crying.
Then I explained to him a very special fur friend had recently left for
Rainbow Bridge, and that his Mummy was crying because she was going to
miss her furr friend, and that Mummy's friend Marina, who was Frank's
meowmie, was going to miss him most of all. But it was OK, because
Frank the special fur friend was happy and playing with his sister
Nikki and all the other special friends at Rainbow Bridge.
Cary looked entranced whilst I was telling him this. He hugged me again
and gave me his version of a kiss, and then got off my lap and went
back to whatever it was he was breaking, err, playing with.
I'm 100% sure that he understood what was being said, and was doing his
best to comfort me, everyone else who has shed tears for Frankie, but I
think most of all he was sending little 19 month old hugs and kisses to
Marina.

Miranda,
Your Meowmy is very brave, but she will need a lot of love and
attention from you and Caliban until she's managed to fix her leaky
eyes. She had Unka Frank for many years, and she will be sad at his
having to go away for a long time to come. I'm just glad to know that
you and Caliban are there to keep her company so that she's not bereft
of cats.
Unka Frank taught you well, but I'm afraid the mantle of Senior Cat
has now fallen to you. Don't stop Caliban when he starts to
play--watching him be a clown for your meowmie may be the happiest
medicine she can have, right now. And keep protecting your Meowmy from
greeblings. Her greebling resistance is down, right now. But if Meowmy
looks sad, go sit in her lap and give her headbutts and purr loudly.
Remind her that YOU are there and that you love her.

My dear little one,
I'm very glad you got to spend a nice day with your Meowmie, all cuddled up
under the blankets and getting nice little shrimpies to munch on. There's
nothing I like quite as much as when I get to curl up with my own catbabies.
I've never met you, but you sound an awful lot like them.
Uncle Frank was with your Meowmie a very long time, and worked very hard to
keep her happy. It's a tough job, you know, because we two-leggers can be
tough to work with sometimes. But he did it long and very well, and taught
you and Caliban to take over because it was time for Frank to retire. You'll
see him again someday, in a happy place where there are always shrimpies,
and where it's always summer with catnip growing everywhere.
Take care of your Meowmie and make sure she knows you love her as much as
she loves you and Caliban and Uncle Frank. And tell her she has lots of
friends who love her too, even some who've never even met her.
Blessed be, little cat.

Miranda, what happened is that Unca Frank's body, in which he lived such a
long and venerable life on earth, grew too weak and tired to be a proper
home for his beautiful, brilliant spirit. When that happens, there comes a
day when the spirit leaves the body behind.
And even though we greatly miss seeing our loved ones in person, in their
body, from then on, their spirit still lives. We'll see them again when
it's OUR turn for our spirit to join them.
Now he's young and strong, not weak and tired. And he and Nikki will watch
over your Meowmy and you and Caliban forever.
Prayers and purrs of comfort to all of you. And know that those of us who

I am so very sorry about Frank. I know how we love ours furry girls
and can't imagine how you feel as I caould't fathom how I would feel
if something happened to ours.
With deepest sympathy,
John, Karen, Silver and Scout

I'm very sorry, Marina. I know Frank had a wonderful life as I have
read your stories for a long time. I had a special 18 year old boy,
too, so I know how close we get to them. My condolences on your loss.
