Kim - 22 Sep 2004 02:22 GMT ... if you're on high speed that is (it's about a 500MB download). http://www.archive.org/movies/details-db.php?collection=prelinger&collectionid=0 0961&from=pickList
It's the life of a cat family -- mom, dad and 5 little kittens. It's B&W and there's no sound but it's oh so touching. You get to see the kittens being born and watch them grow and learn from mom and dad up to the age of about 3 weeks or so. VERY cute... and sure to invoke a case of kitten fever.
I'm sure you'll love it....

I'm impatient, so just picked the quick 70 MB DivX download. :) I just watched the first three minutes. The mom cat is so cute! Her eyes and ears are very expressive, and her acting is top-notch. :)
I sort of paused it at the point where there appears to be an "Alien"-like plot twist where something slimy slithers out her back end. I'll build up my courage later and continue to watch.

It's a silent film, made in the 1940's, and it's about a momcat, a dadcat, and their five adorable kittens! It's a very close family. The parents cuddle and wash each other, and the tom plays with the kittens and babysits them.

The camera work and editing is TERRIFIC. I love when she is moving them and He is watching in fascination. Or the first time he sees them. Or when He teaches them to climb the scratching post. What a great little film. I find myself looking at my cats and thinking "you were wobbly little things once!"

I liked how the parentage was so obvious. Two of them looked like little versions of the queen, and three of them looked like little versions of the tom.
When I was watching the film, I looked down at Betty (who I thought was sleeping), and she was *fascinated*! It was so funny watching her eyes go back and forth following the action. She purred when the kittens started walking, and when they were drinking from the saucer. When it was over, she kept looking back towards the monitor to see if it would produce more kittens. :)

Maybe when she saw the cute kittens in the movie, she saw them as potential prey. ;) Or maybe she was reminded of when she was a kitten and played with her littermates. Actually, I have no idea how she would react to another cat or another kitten.

Pam S. enough already
Takayuki - 23 Sep 2004 03:41 GMT >Purrs tend to be from pleasure or pain. Betty was pleased to see the >kittens. NOW GET HER A KITTEN! I understand, so purrs are like human moans! Humans can moan from either pleasure or pain. From this, I can hypothesize that cats can also purr under the following conditions:
1. The cat hears a bad joke. 2. The cat is given bad news. 3. The cat is a ghost. 4. The cat has many complaints.
:)
Tanada - 23 Sep 2004 04:45 GMT >>Purrs tend to be from pleasure or pain. Betty was pleased to see the >>kittens. NOW GET HER A KITTEN! [quoted text clipped - 9 lines] > > :) With the type of humor my cats tend to display, the joke would have to be extremely bad for them NOT to purr in humor. If the cats were human, one would never dare bend over in front of them, especially Berfert and Pine Cone. Bad news is generally that their food dish is empty, their litter box needs cleaning, or that the excess hoomin population is going up again.
Basically, I really think it means that Betty was getting pleasure from seeing the kits and wants a buddy of her own. SO GET BETTY A KITTEN!!!

I love when she is [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > > Have you seen any of them when they were that wobbly? :) I didn't know Pearl as a kitten at all. It's almost hard to picture because she is so...adult. Grant and Sugar were probably 9 weeks or so old when I got them. No longer wobbly, but tiny. Sugar sometimes still looks like a kitten to me. She's so cute. Grant of course is now such a big boy, it's hard to remember. I'm amazed when I see the few pics I have of them as youngsters.

It's been only a few hours since you last told me that! It's a really long, drawn out process that normally takes not hours, but days, months, years, sometimes even centuries. I mean, I have to, um, honor the traditions of my ancestors and perform the rite of the Japanese Zulu-Tango contemplation.

Good one. I'll see what I can do to shorten the contemplation period. ;) But it's more likely that Betty's eventual companion would be older than younger, because that's what the shelters usually have.

OTOH, she'll be more likely to amicably accept a younger cat, and probably do better with a male. An older cat, especially another female, is more likely to have her feeling that her territory is being threatened, IMO.

This is exactly the kind of thing that needs to be considered during the contemplation period. If I got another cat, I could keep it on the second floor, which Betty does not seem to consider her territory.
I'll keep the gender issue in mind, but all this advice is coming from two people who don't even seem to be sure whether their own pets are boys or girls. ;)

(The Attilla incident wasn't my fault, since I was about six or seven at the time ;-) ).
I'll let Pam speak for herself. :-)

I'm planning to download it when I have time, but yesterday when I started the d/l, it said it would take half an hour. And I have DSL! Is it really that huge a file??
Also, I noticed the film was available in all these weird formats, like "mp2" and "mp4". Do standard video players recognize these formats? What is DivX? I seem to remember downloading something related to DivX about a year ago, but it kept telling me I needed this and that patch, etc, so I never used it. What software will play these files?
Thanks, Joyce

Really nice video. I'm saving it. Jazz & his mama

Another shot shows a little face peeking out from between the logs while a second kitten prances by. So gorgeous :-))

If I could pick any of them to take home, it would be her. :) There was also a cute shot of one of the kittens in the box yawning and stretching. They were all very cute.
