I was just sitting on the couch, Pearl leaning against my legs and
Sugar asleep in the perch beside me, when all the sudden Sugar let out
a HIIIISSSSS! and woke up! She must have had a bad dream. She is very
clingy now, coming to sit right behind my head. Poor baby! I wonder
what she was dreaming.

Awwww!  Poor Sugar.

Persia dreams... her little paws twitch in her sleep and she makes these
mewling sounds like she's so scared.  I don't know what to do to make her
feel better other than to gently stroke her fur and whisper, "It's okay,
Persia, it's okay."  Sometimes she jolts awake, but not always.  Sometimes
she just settles down and I can feel a purrrrrrrr start up when she's still
asleep :)

That's interesting.  I know cats dream, but nightmares?  Huh.........!?!

I have woken up Nocturne from nightmares.  She cries, has a pained
expression on her face and flails her paws.  For about 5 minutes after
I wake her up, she's an absolute sweetheart, cuddling, purring,
clinging...then she reverts to form and starts pulling her "I am queen
of you" routine.

Huh, so they really do have bad dreams and *think* (ha ha) they need us?  In
all honesty, I didn't think a creature with such a pure soul would have bad
dreams.  Interesting, but your post and the OP makes me realize that they're
more human than I thought.

It made me wonder what Nocturne lived through before we got her.  I
know she spent three weeks in the animal shelter and they said she came
from a place where she was allowed to go into a house, but not to stay
in the house...like a barn cat, or shed cat or something.  I don't
think she was abused, but apparently there's something in her memory
that can produce a bad dream (either that, or a chemical
imbalance/neuron firing that triggers those fear instincts in her while
she sleeps).

One would think that Smokey would have LOTS of unpleasant memories for
nightmares, but I've never seen him have one.

Come to think of it, I've never seen the bitties have one either.  It's
not as though they have had any experience of pain/fear, except for
Kumani when she was sick, and Tyche when my mom lifted her (at age 8
months) by the scruff.

Snoopy has had a few nightmares in her 15+ years, once a couple of years ago
she woke up trembling, she was very cuddly then. I hate to think what she
could have been dreaming.

Awww - poor Pearl.  I'm glad she's got her mommy to protect her :-)

Must have been a terrible dream! Yes, I've noticed cats in the midst
of a dream before, but nothing more than mouth moving, paws
twitching, etc.
