Such a little lady

O J - 21 Sep 2004 14:56 GMT Hi All,
My little Squidget is the princess of the bunch. At least she tries to act that way. When she's sitting up, with her forelegs straight and her hind legs folded under her, she will modestly wrap her tail around her body and let the tip of it cover her front paws. If she's lying down, but not stretched out, she will cross her front paws. She almost never goes into the four legged open position on her back, in fact she hardly sleeps on her back at all.
I'm not sure why I think these are modest, feminine gestures, but she certainly looks demure sitting or lying there that way. Do you notice any gestures or postures that you identify with either your male of female cats?

CatNipped - 21 Sep 2004 15:23 GMT > Hi All, > [quoted text clipped - 14 lines] > Regards and Purrs, > O J AAAWWWWW! All 4 of mine do this, and all 4 are female. Also, when they do lie on their backs their legs are tucked up with paws folded over.
Hugs,
CatNipped

Mimi was always pulled together like that. Stinky sprawls. I have no idea whether it was gender-related, or just Mimi and Stinky-related.
I always called Mimi "the no- nonsense cat," and Stinky "the all-nonsense cat." ;)

Licorice is quite elegant in this way, and he loves to sit in that pose. Looks extremely handsome like that, too.

LOL! That does mar the picture a bit. Frank often forgets his tongue, so no matter how elegantly he poses, he just looks silly. Nikki seldom poses elegantly, but then, she doesn't forget her tongue out -- I've seen her forget it once, just a few days ago. I tired to get a picture, but of course she pulled it in just before I got thr shot.

CATherine - 22 Sep 2004 03:23 GMT >Hi All, > [quoted text clipped - 10 lines] >any gestures or postures that you identify with either your male of >female cats? Sheba sits in a regal position but with her tail straight out behind her, usually in the pathway. And she acts outraged if anyone thinks it is in the way. I think a youthful injury to her tail is the cause of the positioning of her tail. It still has a kink in it and the hair on the lower half doesn't fluff. However, she will curl it around her when she lies on her side.
Robin and Djoser don't seem to have a particular pose. But Amber (RB) had many poses all his own. When walking, he carried his tail low and curved forward, usually on the right side. When sitting, he could assume the regal pose with the tip of his very fluffy tail turned up looking like a pom-pom. Or he would sit on a window sill with his plume of a tail hanging down like the letter "g". When lying down, he would get into so many different sleeping positions, like a contortionist and expose his belly and throat and look adorable. Oh, how I miss that cat! <tears>

Singh - 22 Sep 2004 04:50 GMT My Roxie's ladylike behavior seems mostly evedent at chow time. Stosh and Brandy have next to no table manners; they wolf their food, sending bits everywhere flying, and immediately go back to their roughhousing. I call them my Juvenile Delinquents, thought Stosh is just over a year and a half old and so would be a true adult. Chronologically.
Roxie is nearly Victorian in her manners. I can see her unfolding a dainty napkin and spreading it out. She takes delicate little nibbles, taking care not to get crumbs or gravy on her cheeks or chin, and takes only a little at a time. Her only exception to her etiquette is when ham comes around, and then she's Mama's little sneak thief.
Roxie is also the most meditative, and prefers the yoga position of front paws tucked in, eyes almost but not quite closed. She does not like to be disturbed in this state. She is close to enlightenment, it seems at times. She alone will sit with us at prayer, the other two being too young and too hyper to stay long, and that's cool; our creator made them that way and I won't tamper with their nature. But if Sikhs had nuns, Roxie would be in the running. Maybe she's Buddhist...
Blessed be,
Baha

She's full of the devil, but pick her up and she'll settle into you with deep, rumbling purrs so huge you can't believe they come from such a little body. Louie and I say that cats are doing "Naam Simran," a Sikh meditation where you repeat the name of God as a mantra and prayer, when they purr. And they seem so joyful them, so who am i to argue it?

I don't know!! she's all of seven pounds, kind of chunky for an 8 month old kitten but the vet's not much worried. But you can hear her purring from the next room. Roxie is no less transcendental, no less ecstatic, but much quieter. She's not a hugger like the other two. Roxie, a cat collecting victim, was rescued from a house that had over 40 cats and kitty-doo *everywhere*; she was beat on, run off from food and water, and was a mess when the shelter got her. She does not like confinement and to her, her security is in her sense of freedom to move as she pleases. But you can pet her until the cows come home, and she'll wiggle on the floor, arch herself, make little trilly sounds, and purr so quietly you have to touch her throat and chest to know she's doing it. But you can pet her for hours, and she'll purr for hours. If a cat's purr is a prayer and how they remember the name of God, then she must be telling Him/Her thanks for lots of space and lots of love.

Currently sprawled on his back with legs in all directions and no dignity whatsoever.

Pearl definitely seems feminine, but she doesn't do the "coy" bit like Sugar. She is more stately. Grant definitely is all boy. He still does that kind of "King of the Jungle" walk which is very manly in the shoulders with his tail kinked up just at the base. That's when he's feeling "manly". Other wise, he lays all over. He made me gigle the other day as he laid on his back on the floor, legs all asplay, and then started cleaning a front paw. I don't know why, but it was really funny.

Enfilade - 22 Sep 2004 22:20 GMT Do you notice
> any gestures or postures that you identify with either your male of > female cats? Smokey's favourite pasttime is "poking," defined as "working hard at doing nothing." Poking doesn't count if the cat's asleep, since sleeping does not require effort. Smokey's really poking hard when we see him on his back on the couch, all four paws in the air, head hanging over the edge, eyes wide open lookin' around--and he holds that pose for hours on end.
Nocturne would never do anything so crass. She spends her time enthroned on a pillow, tail curled around legs, occasionally grooming herself.
The bitties move around too much to poke, and dont' have Nocturne's sense of elegance. They're best known for sleeping with their forepaws/"arms" around each other. SISTERS!
