I haven't either!  I need to get to WalMart somehow and buy cards and then
somehow get to the post office for stamps.  My husband's truck dies when we
turn the lights on so he can't drive it at night, he works days and I work
weekends and nights.  :-(    I don't want to have to pay for a cab, but I
may have to..........

He thinks the alternator is overcharging the battery so that when he turns
the lights on, they blow out and we have to buy new headlights.  This is the
3rd alternator in the past year, too!

well unless he is buying the alternators from discount auto ( I went thru 6
alternators from the shelf having them pre test tit before I replaced on my
truck)  it is not the alternator
a couple possibilities   voltage regulator on the alternator  the brain or
the cylinode ( it looks like a small biscuit sleeve )

Time to go to a electrical shop and have them throw the testers on it cost
about $5 to $10  average here

Ha!  We have been buying alternators from Discount Auto.  How ironic is
THAT?

Some alternators have the voltage regulator built in, in some cases you
have a voltage regulator apart from the alternator. Sure sounds like a bad
regulator. That would allow the alternator to put out too much voltage
which can burn out headlights in no time. FYI, it's not possible to
overcharge a battery in the way your hubby suspects - a 12 volt battery
won't put out much more than 12 volts, no matter what you pump into it. An
alternator, though, can run pretty hot (high output voltage) if it isn't
regulated properly.

That was my experience I may have to pay more but I go to the dealership to
get eth parts I need if necessary

But pep boys and auto zone I have always had good results

I learned the hard way by replacing the alternators and kept having the
problem got sick of pulling it off

yeah, we bought it last year, after having no car for 6 months which is
worse. but we only have $9000 owing on it now, so when we pay it off, it
will be my car, and we'll get a twin cab ute for DH's work car. Hopefully it
will be paid off before DS1 starts school!!
