I just received the following from my sister:
Hi,
I would just like you to pray for Samus-she is lost. She must have gotten
out Sunday night when Dave let the dogs out before he went to bed, and she's
been gone ever since. I've checked the pound and have put posters up around
the neiborhood. My biggest concern is that there are lots of big dogs that
live around here, and she has no fear of the them.
I am heartbroken.

Purrs for Samus to come back soon. The majority of cats that get lost
it seems, are found again, so there's plenty of hope.

It can just be so hard to find them, and if they get spooked they only hide
when you look for them. We are adding our own "get-ur-butt" home purrs.

Here there really aren't any local shops or post office places. She lives in
kind of a suburb type place (but not like a big city suburb.) There are just
miles and miles of houses between two highways. I haven't heard anything
yet. I don';t think she's come home :( She is pretty young (maybe 9 months
old?).

Karen,
Has your sister gone from house to house and asked them to open all of
their garages and out-buildings? I've heard so many stories of cats
being shut inside of something.
My aunt's cat was stuck under the condos next door, in the crawl space.
Hope kitty shows up soon,
Rhonda

I told her she should do that. I haven't heard back since yesterday.

Remind her to check with the shelters, call the local vets and post signs on
telephone poles. Duct tape and a lot of persistance will make them stick.
At this point its likely someone knows where the cat is but don't know how
to find its owner.

You might want to let your sister know that in one case here on RPCA a
lost cat found his way home several MONTHS after getting lost. So she
shouldn't give up hope.

I do hope your sister's kitty is soon found; or return on her own.
Meanwhile, this may help a tiny bit:
An Old Russian Prayer
Hear our prayer Lord, for all animals,
May they be well-fed and well-trained and happy;
Protect them from hunger and fear and suffering;
And, we pray, protect specially, dear Lord,
The little cat who is the companion of our home,
Keep her safe as she goes abroad,
And bring her back to comfort us.
