I've been working horrendous hours on some financial stuff for my daugher's
school and have had a parade of other people in the house helping me with
it.
Otis has jumped up and settled in on every single visitor's lap. He purrs
like crazy, his tail (rather alarmingly) puffs out and curls towards his
head, he turns around to show them his rear end (they all say they prefer
the other view) and then he curls up on their laps.
A part of me finds this kind of disconcerting. I mean, he loves his *mom* -
what's all this shameless sucking up to visitors about anyway? It seems
somehow unseemly behaviour from him - I think he's mellowing in his old age
and I find it just so surprising. He used to more wound up, more devoted to
one person, and eager to go outside rather than cuddle. This is rocking my
world.

Don't worry, cats DO tend to mellow as they mature. I think it's great
that he's decided visiting hoomins are worthy of acting as a temporary
cushion.

I have a friend who comes over to walk. She is not a huge animal person, so
she doesn't pay much attention to the cats. She will be standing there
talking and Pearl just gaaaaazes at her and watches her every movement
hoping for a scritch (which is a shameless ploy, a test to see if newcomer
is attentive enough.) It's so funny. You would think Pearl is some super
cuddler or something. When I point out that homage is needed my friend will
give a tiny scritch on the head and tell her she is pretty. I think
sometimes they like to make people stop and pay attention.
