meee - 15 Nov 2005 00:52 GMT well, I've discovered the father of Jasmine's kittens....as I was blithely wandering along with my children on our walk, what did I see but AN ORANGE CAT!!! Definitely orange. not grey. not black. but orange. Very Suspicious, said I , remembering what the vet had said about '90% of orange tabbies being male and Quite Rare'.....So I just sat there looking at him, and he sat there looking at me, for about five minutes, me calling him nasty names such as 'you evil little bugger' in a friendly way of course.....then went home and laughed myself silly. as jasmine is mongrelish, the only possibility for her popping out four orange and white kittens was that they were fathered by an orange cat. He was under his owner's car, and flea collared, so unless he is spayed, which it's entirely likely he's not, I think we have a winner!!! Note on Jasmine and the kittens; they are growing well, and starting to crawl around a lot more, able to hold their heads up and hiss at me when I go in for a drool....did you know that when a kitten spits, it sounds like a sneeze and they look remarkably silly, and are totally unaware of their own sillyness, being convinced that they are being Very Fierce!? Jasmine is gaining weight well, she lost a bit of condition after she gave birth as she went off her food for a few days, but I'm feeding her kitten kibbles, meat or fish every night and plenty of water. I found the tinned foods to be pointless and feeding her kitten kibble and raw or cooked meat is much better for her by the look of it.

FYI You cannot "spay" a tomcat -- you can "castrate"him. Yellow, orange and reddish cats are not rare. We had an orange tom when I was a teenager. He weighed about 20 pounds. He insisted on going out at night in all kinds of weather. We also acquired an orange stray who obviously was one of his offspring. We took the kitten to be castrated but the Vet bungled the job and the kitten died. This was many, many years ago. MLB

MLB If I remember my childhood correctly, in "alley cats" or just your typical barn cat, color patterns and longhair/shorthair wasn't any proof of much. When our barn cat had kittens (I was 8-11ish, out of my control) she frequently had a mixed batch and this was over four or five years and almost always had one orange boy out of the bunch, right next to a couple tuxedo's and maybe a calico or seal point.

Any single "alley cat" represents such an accumulation of color genes that only Bast and a real expert could predict what will come out of a random mating.

Male orange (ginger as we call them in the UK) tabbies are not at all rare. What are rare are ginger tabby females. Plus bear in mind that kittens in a litter can have different fathers.

As the vet said, about 90% of all orange cats are male-- but male orange cats aren't rare, they're pretty common.

jXwXeXrXmXoXnXt@sonic.net - 15 Nov 2005 23:56 GMT > It is female orange cats that are rare. As the vet said, about 90% of > all orange cats are male Hmm... I've read that it's 75% males. And I have known a few orange female cats in my life, so they don't seem extremely rare. I'd buy that 25% of orange cats are female. But I'll have to poke around again on the cat-color genetics websites to be sure.
Speaking of cat-color genetics, the other night I was watching one of those true-story shows on Animal Planet. A woman was telling a story about her cat, and kept referring to the cat as "he". But the cat shown on the screen was a calico! I know there are the very rare calico males out there, but more likely, the people who produced the show had no idea what was what. You know how they dramatize a true story with stand-in human and animal actors, while the real person tells the story in a voice-over. So the real woman's cat probably was a male, but they chose a calico to "play the role" in the dramatization. Duh!!

I loved it when Redunzel and Sarrasine first discovered they could fluff their tails up, they walked around for ages with tails fluffed up just because they could and they thought they looked tough!

His favorite activity is to wait until a kitty is walking down the hallway from the living room towards the bedroom. He stands on top of the covered litter box in the living room, gets all wound up, and makes a HUGE LEAP, soaring over the top of the unsuspecting kitty and landing easily 6 or 8 feet down the hallway. He loves to make the other kitties jump by doing that!
Harri does it on occasion too, but its harder for her since she's so much smaller than Ranger.
