what age do vets where you all are allow kittens to be desexed? Every Single Vet I called in my city said 5 months was the earliest they will desex kittens. Asides from the fact I am already struggling to save the money to do it, how on earth will i find homes for 6 month old kittens? the rspca desexes their kittens at 8 weeks but couldn't help me. so unless i dump the kittens on the rspca doorstep and ring the bell, i will have to wait 6 months to get them desexed. The animal welfare offered to help if the kittens come into heat before 6 months. but for goodness sake, how money hungry are these vets? because i can't see any reason for desexing cats only after 6 months than not being bothered, or being able to get more money as the cat will probably be pregnant by then and you get charged more for desexing if the cat is pregnant or on heat. Southern California. funny how australia is soooo far behind the rest of the world in this :^( the worst thing about this is, that if i dumped them anonymously on the rspca, they would desex them at 8 weeks and rehome them all in no time! I don't get it, why does the RSPCA desex so early, and no other vet in town does? Then they all pretend they care about the cat overpopulation crises, and wonder why people dump baskets of kittens on their doorstep. The Animal Welfare lady (different to RSPCA) said it was nice I was doing the right thing, called me 'dear' and offered a 10% discount on Jasmine's desex. which is very nice, however doesn't help the kittens one bit, as they won't desex either until 6 months, although they did offer to desex the girl earlier if she came into heat earlier. Grrrrr so frustrating, and i don't know what to do. some of the vets even tried to push me to vaccinate as well, which i would love to do, but at up to $150 per kitten for desex plus $60 each for vaccination, i just can't afford it. And I am not meaning, dang, I can't get that new cable channel I wanted, I mean, my husband's boss has cut everyones hours, I can't work cos I have 2 toddlers, our rent is 50% of his paycheck and i have overdue phone and electricity bills kind of can't afford it. so if you don't hear from me for a while, you'll know why. sorry, everyone to vent. i know i have it easy here, at least we haven't had any hurricanes (yet) but i really don't have anyone else to talk to. it's been so greta being able to 'make friends' with you guys, we've just moved from country to city and i just don't know anyone. you guys have really helped me out a lot, in more ways than one, so thanks to you all There are many intelligent species in the Universe. I would have suggested calling local animal protection societies for recommendations, but you've obviously already tried that with RSPCA and got nowhere. Have you tried calling your local division of the Australian Veterinary Association? They might recommend someone who does the earlier operation. My vet wouldn't do it until the bitties were 6 months old. But then again, the bitties were not going to live with anyone else, and there were no intact toms in the house. I wonder, if you adopt out these kittens, maybe you should make up an adoption contract which states that whoever adopts them will speuter them. Don't know if all states are the same. Melisande was a good deal younger than five months when my Pasadena vet performed the surgery! (Not quite three months, IIRC.) I thought it was male cats they don't like to do too early - apparently because the urethra isn't fully developed, so they might be more prone to urniary tract problems, later. when I adopted Lily from PetSmart she had come from an organization called LAST CHANCE. She was only 8 weeks old and already spayed. All the kitties that were available for adoption were all the same age and were all spayed and neutered. Try one of the adoption organizations in your area. They might be able to help you out. Good luck. Here the felines-only vet that I use doesn't do it until the kittens are six months or 3 kilos. Most other vets (that are not specialised on cats) won't do it until 8-12 months.
