Eager beaver

Marina - 18 Sep 2004 20:06 GMT Sometimes Nikki does what i call her eager-beaver thing. It's not just her face, but her whole body seems to hum with excitement. Her eyes are big as saucers and popping out of her head. She pushes her whiskers so much forward that her whiskers pads stand out from her face. It's especially noticeable now that her chin has been shaved. She paws at anything that happens to be in front of her, with her claws just a little out, so they make little holes. I've never seen any other cat do this. She's not sharpening her claws, it's just light pawing, but with the claws out a little.
Just now, she was sitting out on the balcony, doing the eager beaver and pawing the bookshelf I have there for the cats to sit on. Paw, paw, paw, with the claws sticking a little at each pawing, so there's a row of little holes along the edge of the shelf. And purring very loudly all the time. I don't know what she was so excited about, but then she went to the litterbox, a huge stink spread throughout the flat, and then she climbed to the top of the cat tree and fell asleep.

He does it on carpet, with butt in air. Whiskers all pushed forward. He does that same thing with his claws just a leeeeetle bit out, but not enough to really catch. He too, also, goes and lays down after ward (or he may make a small detour and briefly wrestle a nip stick). It's SO cute.

He has favorite places where he does it, and he gets to doing it with great enthusiasm! No claws, just paws. After he does it awhile, he flops and rolls over. It looks rather like he is in the litter box.
I can get him to do it if I make pawing motions. He jumps up and does it immediately.

She sems to be so happy that I *get* it, though of course, I don't.

So it's not just Nikki being weird again. ;o) Nikki usually does it against something like a chair (my dining room chairs all have rows of little holes along the crossbars near the floor) or that shelf on the balcony. I'd just like to know what it *means*, but I suppose I'll only have resign myself to giving her a good scritching when she does it. (After the scritching, she goes right back to doing it, sometimes even more eagerly than before.)

I guess not all cats do it, if Frank, Pearl, or Sugar don't do it. It's hard to picture!

It's hard to picture! Grant is the first one I've ever had that does it. It's like he is "delicately clawing the hell" out of the carpet or post he is at. He likes the oriental carpet best for this. He doesn't damage it at all. It's really quite thoughtful.

Marina, it's so weird that you posted this, because last night while I was in the kitchen I was thinking about posting something to the group about this very thing (I just wasn't quite sure what subject to give it).............
For years now, I've noticed most of my cats go ripping around the house, tail like a question mark - right before they go and make a big stink in the litter box!! What do y'all suppose the connection is there?

He saunters to the box very nonchalantly and casually; then when he's done, he tears out of the room like-- well-- like he's had a great weight lifted from him. ;)

Could be Stinky gets busy in the box and then tears out of the room in an attempt to trick you so you won't notice that it was him who made the big PU. ;))

Pam S. who's see all of her seven do this at times.

What do y'all suppose the connection is > there? I've always assumed it's to 'get things moving', especially for indoor cats who might not get that much exercise. Mine do the tearing around both before and after making a stinky deposit in the litter box. For the tear-around afterwards, I think Theresa's explanation sounds plausible. :o)

I always know when he's going up there because that's when he's like "Oh, I'm not going anyhere in particular, la-de-da-de-da." ;) Afterwards he comes bouncing down the stairs. ;)

Stinky: 'I do believe I'll take a stroll upstairs to the Stinky's grand box, being so nonchalant that I really am actually invisible.'
Theresa: 'Oh if only I were a clever kitty like Stinky, I would be able to see him going upstairs.'
Stinky: 'WOW! I feel great ! I shall now make myself visible to my Theresa and allow her to tell me how wonderful I am.'

Well, I could go ask Gidget, but I wouldn't want to give her any ideas.

Sounds like she's getting into a predatory mood. Try dangling some string (or other favorite toy) in front of her when she's doing this, and see if she goes after it any more than usual.
