Purrs for Vernon please - hit & run

dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 19 Sep 2004 14:01 GMT Vernon was a victim of a hit & run this morning. Thankfully his injuries are minor, but nevertheless, it was a far from enjoyable experience for him & for me. I am very pleased that I am not in the position of collecting the insurance monies.
Vernon & I went for a cycle over the Castle Acre this morning. On the final hill up into the village (Newton Road), there is always a line of parked cars on the right-hand side, so cycling up the hill we had right of way. Vernon was at the top of the hill & I was at the bottom, so didn't see the actual impact. The driver can thank his lucky stars for that, because if I had, by now I'd be in jail for wrecking his car and for assaulting the driver.
Basically Vernon was cycling up the hill. He had right of way. He was almost to the top when twat in a Mondeo comes down the hill and rather than wait for Vernon to finish the short distance, tw*t in a Mondeo crosses to the side of the road Vernon is on, without slowing, and side-swipes Vernon with his wing mirror. Vernon fell off. The frightening this is, to me, Vernon said he'd made eye-contact with the driver - who was smiling as he came on to hit Vernon. Sadly Vernon didn't get the registration number - neither did I as I was oblivious to this happening as I was at the bottom of the hill at the time.
Vernon's helmet is dented - his glasses grazed (Thanks Simon Mason - the safety glasses scratched but didn't shatter, so Vernon's eyes are okay) - he has a cut on his cheekbone which is bruising. He has a bruised & cut left knee; his right hand his cut and he is sort of aching and bruised. Walking wounded - it could have been a lot worse.
The driver did not stop. Tw*t. B*st*rd. Sh*t. I hope he rots in hell.
Anyhow. Guy whose house it happened outside of came out to see if Vernon was okay - alas he didn't get the reg of the car either. Which was when I got to the scene. The sight of one's husband picking himself up from the kerb and *knowing* all is not well is not one I wish to see again.
Called the police. As Vernon was injured, plod attended. It took plod nearly an hour to attend though. I'm not impressed by that. One thing plod said that I find quite horrific, and it was a throwaway line of plod's, "Oh I get several of these a week now." *What???* Several hit & runs a week?!?!?!?!!! I find that appalling. If I hear one more pathetic rant from uk.tosspot about hard-done by drivers, I shall not be responsible for my actions.

Sherry - 19 Sep 2004 14:17 GMT Oh Helen. How scary. Purrs for Vernon's injuries and for your poor nerves to settle down. I hope they catch the scumbag. It sounds like one of those #@%% who thinks they own the road, and expect everyone else to get out of their way. That makes me so angry just to read it. And so grateful that it wasn't worse.
dirtylitterboxofferingstospammers - 19 Sep 2004 14:23 GMT >Oh Helen. How scary. Purrs for Vernon's injuries and for your poor nerves to >settle down. Thanks Sherry. I am gradually calming down. Vernon's bruises are gradually becoming more colourful ;-)
>I hope they catch the scumbag. It sounds like one of those #@%% who thinks >they >own the road, and expect everyone else to get out of their way. That makes me >so angry just to read it. And so grateful that it wasn't worse. I seriously doubt the b*st*rd will be caught. We reported as failure to stop is a criminal offence and I really don't like crinimals, especially ones who smile at my husband before they knock him off his bike with their tonne of motor vehicle. I suppose there is a miniscule chance the sh*t may get caught, but it is only a miniscule chance.

[quoted text clipped - 14 lines] >miniscule chance the sh*t may get caught, but it is only a miniscule >chance. - From the sound of it, the car driver was not only guilty of failure to stop, but deliberately sideswiped Vernon, making it not carelessness but deliberate assault and battery. I hope that he is caught soon before someone is seriously hurt or killed.
I have had drivers deliberately force my bicycle off the road a couple of times in the past, but fortunately wasn't injured either time.
In my worst bike wreck, back in my undergraduate days, I was standing up on the pedals (on a single-speed bike) in order to climb a hill. The chain jumped off the sprocket, and I hit the ground hard enough that my glasses earpiece broke and slashed my left eyebrow to the bone. I ended up having to have four stitches to close that cut. A man who had been about to get onto a city bus took me back to his house, about a block away, so that I could put bandages on the cuts and call my father to come drive me to the doctor. I was reminded of the Biblical parable of the Good Samaritan.
Between bending the handlebars, spraining my left knee, scraping the left side of my face, and the facial cut, it was close to a month before I was in condition to ride the bicycle again. At that point, I invested in a bike helmet.

> Felix will chime in with that, along with some nice juicy hairballs. > Ava would like to contribute dove bombs. LOL -- we have a lot of little sparrows and starlings that roost in the trees near my house (and in our awnings when the leaves fall and the trees are bare). I'm sure we can volunteer their services to leave lots of birdy offerings all over his car, and on HIM when he gets out of the car. It's the least they can do in return for our keeping the bird feeder well-stocked, right? ;o)

Harmony adds her best chirpy-purrs to the chorus for you and Vernon to feel better. She can also add some hurked-up hairballs and stinky semi-digested canned cat food, and the frostiest cat-glare in all of felinity to the offerings to that idiot driver, too.

I am very pleased that I am not in the position of collecting the insurance > monies. Bloody idiot. The driver should get an automatic driving ban for that, he's clearly not competent to be in charge of a car. Ade and I are both very aware of cyclists and motorcyclists when we drive. I did once hit a guy on a moped, but he signalled one way, then changed his mind at the last minuteand drove in another, straight into me.. Fortunately I was going very very slowly, and was almost stopped when I did hit him, because he LOOKED like he wasn't in control of his moped, and I was keeping a close eye on him.

They're >not going to just let this go uninvestigated, will they???!! The amount of time that they can spend on it may depend on their caseload. The fact that Vernon was injured should give it somewhat higher priority. About 15 years ago, my car was damaged in a hit-and-run accident, and I was only able to give the police a limited description of the other vehicle and a partial license plate number, since the accident happened after dark. It turned out that, at that time at least, there were only two police officers assigned to handle all of the hit-and-run cases in Nashville, TN, a city of over half a million people. They explained to me that, due to their caseload, they only had time to investigate cases involving death or serious injury, so it would be up to me to notify the police if I ever again saw the pickup truck that had struck me. I never saw one that I could conclusively say had been that truck, and my insurance had to pay for my car repairs, and therefore my premiums went up.

CK - 19 Sep 2004 17:34 GMT Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive!! The only thing in the driver's defence that comes to mind, is that it may have been a new/borrowed/other-than-his-usual car and he wasn't able to judge the proper size/width of it, thus hitting Vernon... But if I was behind the wheel of a strange car (which is any car, as we don't have one of our own), I'd tend to veer outward from any cyclist, just in case. And it really is appalling that the police get so many of these and don't seem to do much about it!!
Purrs for Vernons sores to heal and for cycling to be safer everywhere.

Many, many times I'm looking straight into the eyes of a driver and they still turn right in front of me, move into my lane... Drivers can't always see motorcyclists and bicyclists. They are not looking at you but straight through you a motorcyclist trainer told me once. I also have a feeling that she didn't know she hit him. I've had cars tap me and they said they had no idea they had. If they hit a car they might feel it but not a bicyclist or motorcyclist. Just giving the woman the benefit of the doubt. If she did see and feel the hit, I would have loved to have joined you in beating the #$%* out of her.

As a teenager I grew up riding motorcycles, in fact didn't have a vehicle with four wheels until in my twenties. I quickly learned that a lot of so-called drivers are blind to bikes (pedal or motor). I'd say it's likely that your hit and run driver never even realized there had been a collision, and not much better than even money that he knew Vernon had gone down. I had several close calls, never went down and only made contact with a car twice. Both times contact was made I chased after the car, and the driver seemed genuinely shocked that there had been an accident. One of those times the driver, a little old lady, said she never saw me at all until I caught up with her and flagged her down.

So any of us could be running over motorcycles and bicycles every day without even knowing about it!
I try to give bicycles and motorcycles a lot of space. I stay about twice as far behind a motorcycle as I do a car. I hope I've never been blind to one!
Tanada - 21 Sep 2004 04:08 GMT > I try to give bicycles and motorcycles a lot of space. I stay about > twice as far behind a motorcycle as I do a car. That's because you use your common sense. I wish more people did. I'm always more careful around motorcycles and bikes, because they can react much faster than I can. I wish more riders were more careful. I see them weaving in and out of traffic all the time. They just seem to assume everyone can see them without problems and will re-act accordingly.

Shocked & appalled, but sadly - in view of current standards of behaviour from the very top down in all sorts of areas - not at all surprised. Tw*t's defence were he ever to be apprehended "the impact must've been so tiny that I never noticed it".
Purrs for Vernon's swift recovery and piles of catbox offerings to tw*t & his ilk
