Miss Whiskers has officially been named this evening. Her official name
is "Lilly".
We decided on calling her Lotus, but when we called her using the name
"Lotus", she ignored us. (She was asleep). Then my brother said, how
about Lilly? At which point her little tabby head shot up from the
blanket she was on, with a "who called?" look on her face and a mrrrp.
:o)
She told us what her name is. ;o)
Lilly it is.

Maybe she was trying to tell you that her name is "Mrrrp?"

That is precious! I don't recall the author of this poem (I **think** it
might be Lewis Carroll), but it is appropriate:
The Naming of Cats
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum -
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover -
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

In "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", on which the musical "Cats"
is based.

So did Jennifer (RB) tell me hers. I was looking for a kitty with some
orange, and I wanted to name him or her "Ginger". When Jennifer got here,
that name just didn't suit her. I tried "Ginny," which didn't work, either.
When I tried "Jenny," that was close, so I figured out it must be
"Jennifer." I never called her "Jenny," it was always the full name.

It's like with Sir William (RB). When I went to his foster moms and saw
him, he had come into care with the really stupid name "Pickles". He
looked at me from his pen, and made it very clear that his name was most
certainly NOT "Pickles".

DP wanted to rename Smokey, but Smokey's just...Smokey (and pokey).
The fact that there are like a zillion other Smokeys and DP had a cat
as a kid named Smokey and all our other cats have more unique names
were all irrelevant to His pokiness.
Looking forward to pics of Lilly!
