Ghost Hunting in TN (OT)

I've had a couple of paranormal experiences here in the Memphis area.  But
that's not what this is about.  I'm not really hunting for ghosts :)

There's an old cemetery in a terrible state of disrepair in what used to be
the seat of Shelby County before Memphis won over.  Raleigh is now a suburb
of Memphis, but the old Raleigh cemetery is still there.  Sadly located
behind some rather decrepit businesses that sell tires and machine parts, it
sits on 7 acres of unkempt ground.

The only reason I knew it was there is because Mom and I had to turn around
back there after visiting my orthodontist in 1974.  I went Oooh, look!
That's a cemetery!  Sure enough.  Heheh.  Apparently it used to be a
church-yard but the church has long been gone.

I made my Mom don some boots (fearful of snakes) and tromp around with me.
The graveyard dates back to 1824.  I think I'll go back and visit and
perhaps do some gravestone rubbings.  All I need is large parchment paper,
charcoal sticks and a spray fixative to secure the rubbing.

There were some very fascinating and ornate old markers.  Wives were
referred to as "beloved consorts".  I've been told that means they
predeceased their husbands; that the term 'relict' means they outlived their
husbands.  Huh.  Never knew that.

The graveyard is, allegedly, haunted.  I wouldn't know about that.  Didn't
hear or see anything when we were there, but something drew me to the place.
It's a wonderful site and I hope to have a good time tromping around the old
graveyard.

For anyone interested in old cemeteries, some U.S. PBS stations are showing
'A Cemetery Special' on Saturday, October 29th in the early evening.  Check
your local listings.

I have a friend from Vermont, who had an age-old Yankee/Puritan
churchyard in her home town.  Her favorite epitaph was "I TOLD YOU I
WAS SICK."  ;)

I live near one of the greatest Victorian necropolises (necropoli?) in
the country, Green-Wood.  It is a really beautiful, serene place.  And
it is full of unexpected urgan wildlife.

That's an eptiaph in the cemetery outside of Boston.  The woman was a known
hypochondriac but she had that carved on her marker!

If I ever get married again and don't do it in a courthouse (which I
probably would do), I'd like to get married in Memorial Park in Memphis.
There is a place there called 'The Crystal Shine Grotto'.  It's a man-made
cavern built around 1930 and the cavern features artworks by local artists.
Outside the Grotto is a 'tree' with benches inside it; looks like an old
Redwood tree.  Across the bridge over a stream is the tomb of an acient
Saint.  (Not really, but it pretends to be.)  It's all very artistic.

The area around The Grotto is very peaceful and pretty.

That is lovely.  It really does look a lot older than it possibly
could be. ;)

Wouldn't it be fun to start a service project through a church, or Boy
Scouts, or local Rotary Club to clean the old cemetery and make it  look
better?    MLB

There is such a project.  I hope to be able to contribute to it.  I still
have a hard time driving outside of known areas but this is some place I
have been before so maybe I can :)

===========================================
I watched it, the one in Boston looks interesting. The graveyard in Salem
Mass. has gravestones dating back to the 1600's. Unfortunately many of
them were vandalized and had to be repaired.
