Thank you all for your well wishes for Otis' dental.
He's home and hungry and recovering nicely from the anesthetic. There were
no extractions; however, he had lost about five small teeth on his own - TED
says that this is just something that some cats do, despite the absence of
terrible gum disease. He's got all his big crunching teeth, which is good.
Otis is also now chipped. Yeah!
Otis is absolutely starving just like Chester was. We were advised that, if
the cats were hungry, to let them have no more than a teaspoon full of food
or they'd hurl it all back up again due to post-anesthetic nausea. I
cheated with Chester - gave him a teaspoon, waited a hour, then another one,
and so on. Otis is circling me like a shark though he's already had his
teaspoon. He's *really* hungry. I will do the same thing with him as I did
with Chester, though am mindful that Otis a hoover-cat and will eat and hurl
if given half a chance.
Thank you again - I'm so happy to have both my boys hope, happy, and with
pearly white teeth :-)

Glad to hear everything went well. Did they have the isoflourane gas
for anesthesia? I heard that stuff is pretty safe.
I think your plan of slow feeding is a good one. It's good to know
they are all chipped, isn't it? We had to get Vino chipped recently
for his upcoming Aussie immigration. Even though we never let him
out, it's still good to know he's identifyable.

Thanks Britta - I asked TED about the isoflourane since Victor had mentioned
it when Chester went in. He said its pretty much the standard now and that
its all they use, which was really nice to hear.
I didn't really think I'd be so excited about getting the boys chipped. I
know what you mean about peace of mind.

See, Otis was just fine. :) I notice that Betty is also hungry after
a vet visit, even if she hadn't been fasting for an anesthetic. And
if ever a cat needed to be chipped, it's Otis.

Excellent! Too bad they don't make GPS receivers small enough. Yet.

Fez does that even when there are bows full of wet food. The boy loves
his crunchies.

Awwww... I'm glad it all went ok. We've only had to get one dental done
ever, for Xoxo, and he came out ok sans a few teeth.

I'm so glad to hear Otis' dental went so well. It is so hard when you
cannot give them food and they are so hungry.

Gawd that was THE most horrible thing for Pearl's blood draw Monday. I
actually had to leave the apt. because it was SOOOOOOO pitiful. Every time I
even moved Pearl and Sugar SPRINTED for the kitchen. I felt like an ogre and
they would not settle. Finally at 6:15 I went to breakfast and killed over
an hour until I could take Pearl in and go to work. *shudder*

It makes you feel like such a bad parent! If possible, I try to
arrange schedules so that they eat a big meal just before the cutoff
time.
I prepare something special like wet food for "dessert", so that Betty
eats more than usual. Then, I try to get her to sleep through her
fasting period, which is usually easy since she's eaten a lot.

Betty is a sweet little cat. Dainty. Ladylike. With manners. Pearl lives for
FOOOOOOOOD. Sugar is a diehard "habit" cat. I could probably feed her at 4
a.m. and she would still wake me at 5:30 because it was breakfast time. They
did tell me they only needed 6 hours of fasting for the next one. I will
gladly pick the bowls up at 2 am. I think it was the fact they couldn't have
their "bedtime snack" that really got them. I sure hope Pearl's counts are
down and it was temporary. The last thing she needs is diabetes on top of
everything else. I wish I could put her on my medical plan!

I've only had one cat, so I don't know if Betty is unusual, but I
thought that cats would be pretty easy to put to sleep, since they do
sleep a lot. If I make a lap for Betty, it's a brief bout of
headbutts and kneading, followed by deep sleep. She's asleep on my
lap right now as a very warm and featureless black donut.
BTW, I agree about the medical plan. I've paid for medical insurance
for ages, and I don't think I've ever used it. The only medical
expense I had in the last decade was $20 for tetanus-diphtheria
booster. I think Betty's cost a lot more than that. :)

Yup. I"ve spent way more on the cats than myself medically speaking. I don't
really mind but I was thinking "Gosh, I'd actually be able to use it if they
were my kids".

Don't tempt fate. I got a bit fed up about 10 years ago at the amount I was
paying for healthcare per month and never using it.
Since 2000 I must have pretty well bankrupted my fund.
