We just received the current issue of Journal of American Medical
Association and on the cover is a charming painting titled Black Cat on
a chair. The artist is listed as Andrew L. von Wittkamp (? - 1897). I
think you can view this painting by going to:
http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/extract/294/15/1867
The first paragraph of the abstract (seen below the painting)says:
Inscrutable, elusive, sly, faithless, divine, diabolical, inquisitive,
ungovernable, unpredictable, feral, finicky, fastidious to a fault,
ineffable. And entitled: to free bed and board, for example, to the best
(or only) chair in the room, to roam on a whim, to return without
explanation, to disappear for days and reappear suddenly as though it
had never been missing. Not even the wordsmith Dr Peter Roget had
adjectives enough to describe this charming tyrant we call the cat.
It just made me smile and I thought I'd share.

I need to get my subscription renewed, but JAMA has a long history of
cover art that doesn't have anything to do with the contents. One of
the senior physician-editors is also an art historian, and the Journal
has developed a tradition of letting her pick a cover and write a page
about it. Most medical journals have no cover art beyond logos.

Cool. I did not know that. I've always noticed the JAMA covers when I see
them. They are distinctive.

That better be the ONLY chair in the room because if it's the best (or most
comfortable) I'll sit on the floor, thanks! Of course we all know cats can
make themselves comfortable in the oddest places.

I love it, and what a beautiful picture, almost like a photograph. It's
strange to think about, the artist died the year my grandmother was born,
1897.

That is either a very large cat or a very small chair! It is a cute
picture. MLB
