And another write-up (with pic, omitted due to this not being a binary

Longtime veterinarian Michael List dead at 57

Former health board president remembered for ethics, activism

by Donita Hadley and Anne Kibbler

October 25, 2005

Michael Ira List, 57, a longtime Bloomington veterinarian and former
president of the Monroe County Board of Health, died Saturday of colon
cancer at Bloomington Hospital.

Lynne Bergh, List's wife of 22 years, said her husband started his practice
in 1978 in a camper in a parking lot in New Unionville. "There was no
plumbing, not even a phone there," she said.

List moved his practice, Blue Sky Veterinary Clinic, to South Walnut Street
in 1980.
Charles Greer, a client for many years at Blue Sky, had List provide health
care for everything from horses to cats. "He was extremely conscientious,
moral and ethical," Greer said. "Those are really the hallmarks of his
practice."

List served for more than 10 years on the Monroe County Board of Health and
was president of the board in 1989, his last year of service. Under his
leadership, the board imposed strict regulations on the installation of
septic systems in the watersheds of lakes Monroe, Lemon and Griffy to
protect the lakes from pollution.

List also worked for many years to further the cleanup of PCBs in Monroe
County, both in his role as a health board member and as facilitator of the
Environmental Protection Agency Citizen's Information Committee. He led
early discussions on a ban on smoking in public places in Monroe County. The
proposal eventually became a county ordinance.
Dr. Richard Owens served on the health board with List and now has a medical
practice in Madison, Wis.

Owens described List as "fearless and indomitable" in working for the public
good.
"He was a wonderful man, as far as developing a sense of what needed to be
done and proceeding come hell or high water to overcome any obstacles in his
path for the community's benefit," Owens said.

Rupert Wentworth, who also served on the board of health with him, remembers
List's efforts to prohibit smoking in public places. "Michael was very
active in bringing that to the county's attention and getting it through the
county commissioners, so the county had a smoking ordinance a long time
before the city did," he said.

Born Sept. 29, 1948, List was a native of Hamilton, Ohio. He studied at
Indiana University and was a graduate of Purdue University's School of
Veterinary Medicine. His survivors include a son, Ace List of Los Angeles,
Calif.; a daughter, Amanda List of Oakland, Calif.; his father, George
Harold List of Bloomington; and a grandson, Amani Grant of Oakland.

A celebration of life service will be conducted at a later date. Memorial
contributions may be made to the Michael List fund at the Community
Foundation of Bloomington and Monroe County
(http://www.communityfoundation.ws/), 101 W. Kirkwood Ave., Suite 321,
Bloomington, IN 47404.

Purr-ayers coming for his crossing. Just think of the hundreds of grateful
fur-babies who he helped will be waiting for him at the bridge!

Hugs,

Yes, I'm sure that Ivy (whom he helped when she was suffering with CRF) will
be there to greet him, and being as she was a calico, she will probably give
him *the* attitude.  But then again, maybe not as she very rarely showed
that "calico" attitude :D (Ivy was a sweetie, and so is Mimi - so much alike
that I think Mimi is Ivy reincarnated)

    I'm so sorry =/

Reading those obits, I can't help thinking, what have I done
that's helped my fellow creatures?  What would they put in my
obit?  Your vet has done much good in the world.

Sounds like a wonderful vet and wonderful individual.  The Rainbow

Purrs for his family.  Lighting a candle to help guide him to the Bridge,
where I'm sure many of his "clients" will be happy to see him.
