My purr-day is tomorrow, but we celebrated it yesterday. DH bought me an
iPod for my birthday (along with a hook-over-the-ear-but-inset type
headset - which is recommended for bikers since you can still hear outside
sounds with them) and a new sound card for my computer.
I had no idea what I was missing! Biking to the beat of the music has *SO*
improved my performance. My mileage was up to 30 miles from 20 miles (I
didn't want to go in until I heard all the songs!). My average speed was 15
MPH up from 12 MPH. And my top speed, during Rob Thomas' "This is How a
Heart Breaks" (I defy anyone to not *MOVE* while listening to that song*)
was 22 MPH!!!!
Not too shabby for someone who just turned 54. Of course, I'll be paying
for this for the next week or so (someone *please* pass the BenGay!!!!). ;>

Lori, not to be a stick in the mud, but please be very careful about
this. As a cyclist, you rely on your ears to warn you of traffic and
unusual situations. By using headphones, you're cutting off one of
your senses.
Another cyclist just died in the area. A college kid was coming home
from a party, sober but dead tired at 8am, fell asleep at the wheel
and veered into the cyclist. The kid got ... a traffic misdemeanor.
I've had a friend crash into a deer on his morning commute (and he had
nightmares about it for months).
As a cyclist, you are absolutely the most vulnerable vehicle on the
road. Even on paths, there are other people, faster cyclists, etc. to
consider. The faster you're moving, the more you need all your senses
attuned to what's going on.
Congrats on your birthday presents! But please think hard about
whether you should be blocking your hearing on the road.

That's why I mentioned the type of headphones I got (not using the ones that
came with the iPod). These are designed for sports use and allow background
sounds to be heard along with the music. It's the same as playing the radio
while you're driving - you can hear the music *and* the traffic noises.

Well, if you're comfortable with the degree of safety, cool.
The ipod headphones (those little earbuds) either fall out or make my
ears ache, depending on how hard I stuff them into my ears. But
regular headphones are always too big -- I have a pair like you
describe (well, Eric does, but I stole them), and they fall off my
ears easily =/ Pretty much everything does.
I have a small head =/
Anyway, enjoy!

These have ear rests in the shape of a "C", so they rest over the top of
your ears without falling out. It also has the benefit that you don't have
to shove the ear pieces into your ears, they just hang next to your ears, so
you can hear background noises as well as your music. However, Helen has
convinced me that it's still too dangerous to be distracted by anything
while biking, so I've decided to save them for my static bicycle.

Yeah, I know. They still fall off of my head easily, and the C hurts
my ears. I'm just a freak that way.

I would definitely be more comfortable with this. But as long as you
educate yourself about the risks, it's your choice to make.

Congrats on the B-day and the iPod! I finally broke down and bought one
myself a few weeks ago - don't listen to it while biking (for the reasons
Monique stated), but I do while walking the dog, and it actually makes me
walk faster (I can tell by the burn). Even if I have an audio book on it (I
borrow them from the local library, books on CD - current book is Velocity
by Dean Koonts, already been through The Broker by John Grisham & 4th of
July by James Patterson - and then put them on my iPod), I *still* walk
faster than when I use nothing!
Happy PurrDay!!!!!!
Hope you have many more!!!!

This makes sense to me. I find that when running or walking, I get
bored without some sort of mental stimulation. Music would do that.
(I went on a 12 mile hike up in the mountains with a friend. I'm sure
that if I'd gone alone, I wouldn't have made it more than a mile or
two. And now that friend has had to follow her job to California.
Bah.)

I've got this weird superstition that I don't congratulate people on
beforehand. But now that it really is the day here too, I want to wish
you a very HAPPY PURR-DAY!

I wonder if that's a Finnish superstition? I've heard it too. Anyway, my
computer was down yesterday, so belated Hoppy Purrday to Lori!
