Looks like she's coming to a backyard near us... if I disappear
tomorrow it's because we've lost our power again - since we lost power
for four days in Katrina I'm expecting it to happen again. We're as
ready as we could get... we've got groceries and nonperishable food
and bottled water and I filled the freezer with filtered water ice
containers, and all the laundry's clean... all I have to do now is to
clean the apartment. And to hope that the tummy bug we've both got
goes away!

Batten down the hatches!  Hope everything is relatively calm for you and
that you get over the tummy bug, too.

I wish we had your luck.  All we're gonna get is a tropical storm.  60 mph
winds with driving rain.  Sheesh.  I have to work tomorrow, but the hubby
doesn't.

You must be very young.  That's the kindest interpretation I can think of
for your comments.  Most of us, even those of us thousands of miles from
Florida, don't think of the possibility of having your home destroyed or of
a stomach bug as "luck".  The combination is more than anybody should have
to deal with.

She's not *that* young LOL  She's from Maui.  They have perfect weather all
year round, light showers and ambient temps around 70.  She just doesn't
know any better.  Oh, but she does know about stomach bugs.

Doesn't Hawaii get a really nasty typhoon about once in a blue moon?  I seem
to remember that while they were trying to film one of the dinosaur movies,
the island of Kauai darn near washed away.

Last time Hawaii was hit with a hurricane was in 1994, hurricane Iniki.  It
basically only affected the island of Kauai.  Hawaii actually gets very few
hurricanes.

The bug is actually very mild... we both feel fine apart from not
wanting to get too far away from a bathroom! The only thing to pray
for is that our water supply is unaffected in case we're not better
tomorrow  - I REALLY wouldn't want to have to live with that
combination of events!

Believe me Kili, you don't want to see it upclose... well, the actual
hurricane itself is kind of exciting - it's the aftermath that sucks,
when you don't have any electricity and there's standing water full of
leaves and branches everywhere making the place smell like a swamp,
and the garbage hasn't been collected so it's sitting there stinking
too, and you have to have all the windows open because otherwise
you'll suffocate from the heat inside... should I go on?
I'm praying that we won't have to do that again... I know we were very
lucky last time that things were back to normal in four days, and we
were lucky on saturday that the flooding didn't come into the
buildings... can we hope for third time lucky too?

I was just wishing because I had never been in a hurricane before.  I wanted
to experience the power of it all, in a way.  Does that make sense?  Turns
out, all we got was much-needed overnight rain and about 30 mph winds.

I'm sorry your daughter had damage due to Katrina.  My family did too.  They
are still staying in a motel in Mississippi while my cousin undergoes chemo
for breast cancer.  She lost her best friend and the godmother of her
children due to Katrina.  I'm not making light of hurricanes, by any means.
I just wanted to experience one.  How can I really relate to the victims
unless I'm a victim myself?   I don't know if you can understand what I'm
saying..... it's kind of odd, I know.

No, I can understand that.  There are people who get excited by forces of
nature - and thank goodness for them or we wouldn't have hurricane trackers
who fly airplanes into the middle of hurricanes so the rest of us can be
timely warned.

Is our kili going to become a storm chaser?   How's the new kitty doing,
anyway?  Got any more pictures?

I've experienced a hurricane, several small tornadoes, and a small
earthquake. None of them devastating, and I wouldn't want to go out
of my way to do it again.

Two floods three hurricanes, several very small earthquakes, seen some minor
tornadoes.  I DO NOT like the feeling of the earth moving under my feet.
Floods do a tremendous amount of damage to property but usually don't pose a
tremendous threat to human life.  They usually come with enough warning.
Same with hurricanes, you can usually manage to get to a safe place.
California tornadoes are babies compared to the mid-west ones.  But your
odds are at least against a direct hit.

They call it Mother Nature for a reason.  As the saying goes, Mamma isn't
happy, ain't nobody happy.

I haven't experienced any of those things - we don't get many natural
disasters here in Finland, unless you count our winters as such. But not
having experienced those extreme kinds of weather, I love the autumn
storm we're having now - hard wind and rain. Of course, it's nothing
like your recent storms on the other side of the pond.

It seems Miranda loves it too, she wants out in the enclosure all the
time, in spite of the weather. She was there a long while, just hunched
down and watching the wind blow and the rain going sideways. Then I
wanted to SHUT THE DOOR already, chased her down and took her inside.
Now she prowls around like a blue panther in a cage and knocks things
off surfaces. Sigh. I suppose I'll just have to put on some warm clothes
and keep the door open a while longer.

Can't you just have her out in the enclosure with your door closed and
keep an eye on her for when she wants back inside?
I never let Vino out but when I'm in the spare bedroom lifting weights
with the aircon cranked, I keep the door closed.  Vino scratches on
the door to let me know he wants in.  So I open the door a crack and
he comes in.  If I don't scritch him enough, he gets huffy and wants
back out.  So he goes and scratches on the door again.  It's a great
system :-)  I'm sure Miranda would tell you to let her back in.

I've tried leaving her out there with the door closed. She panics
immediately and comes to scratch at the door the minute I close it. When
I open it, she turns back outside. She just wants the door to be open,
so that if she gets scared of something, she can get straight inside.
Actually, *I* want her to be able to get straight inside, and I want to
know what's going on outside. There are children playing nearby, and
people walk by all the time. Most of them seem to like seeing the cats
in their enclosure, but I have a suspicous mind. I worry that someone
will take into their head to do something bad to the cats.

That sounds like Mistletoe.  She loves to go out with me when I go outside
to have a (shields up) smoke (shields down), but she does NOT want the door
closed!  Not a problem in the summertime when it's warm, but when it's cool
I refuse to try to heat the neighborhood.

When I close the door, even if I'm outside, she sits at the door, scratches,
and CRIES to get back in.  She knows darn well that I'm outside with her and
won't leave her out by herself (in the fully fenced yard).  If the door
stays open enough for her to get back in, she's fine.  If it's open, but not
enough for her to easily get back inside, it's the piteous wails of a poor
mistreated kitty.

And it's not OK if I go out without her -- then she wails to come outside
with me.

Oh, well, she's our baby anyway.

A closed door is an offense to all cats -- makes no difference
which side the cat is on or which side he/she wants to *be* on.
That door should *not* be *closed*.

Here's the story that got me in trouble on RPCH-B:

When Flicka and Zubie were still little enough so that going
upstairs on their own was a struggle, we had occasion to close
off for a while one of the downstairs rooms which was normally a
permitted space for them.  Zubie discovered the change at a time
when Flicka happened to be upstairs.  First, she sat down by
herself and tried to stare the door open, as cats are wont to
do, with that look we all know, compounded of incredulity,
disgust and the expectation that the error *will* be promptly
corrected.  When that didn't work, she looked around for help
from her sister and finally made the long trek up the stairs to
find her and bring her down -- round trip perhaps fifteen
minutes.  She showed Flicka what the problem was, and the two
sat down together to stare that door into submission.

Very cute story, but how could that possibly get you in trouble in

RPCH-B is supposed to be reserved for "serious" health and
behavior issues.  "Cute cat stories" are discouraged.  I should
have read the charter before I posted.

In my defense, I can say that I had *looked* for it -- just
hadn't found it yet.  There is no one there who takes
responsibility for periodically posting a pointer.

And of course cute cat stories do frequently sneak in there, and
are only infrequently deplored.  As one of the regulars pointed
out, one reason that they aren't more actively discouraged in
the group is that it takes courage, since any suggestion that
something shouldn't have been posted gets the "free speech"
kooks all up in arms, yelling "Net Nazi", and is apt to make
things difficult in the future for whoever made the suggestion.

Anyway, I was happy to be directed over here.

Hi Wayne,
It was  a great description of cat behavior, after all.
Every cat I've known considers a closed door a very serious issue.
But, thanks to whoever directed you here.  I hope you post more about your
cats' behavior.

My goodness.  God forbid that anyone should be "forced" to read a cute
cat story.  I've never read that group and don't intend to either.
Glad you ended up here.
