Just curious about your Feliway experiences?

Cleo is coming back from the big snip tomorrow, so I bought a couple of
Feliway diffusers in honour of her return. I thought it might help with her
testiness, especially since she will be under the weather for a few days. I
plugged them in tonight and the girls (Cali & Smokey) seemed a little
friskier than usual. But this could be due to their relief that Cleo is
absent. Cali went through this when Smokey was away for her snip.

I've used them.  The cats seemed to start getting along better.  But after a
while both cats seems kind of irritable so we stopped using them.

Which proves exactly nothing.  But then again the group is anecdotes.

Thanks Jo, I was wondering about the long term "effects". Did you go through
even one bottle before you stopped using them?

Not quite.  But then I was introducing a new cat to an older one.  They
likely would have started to get along eventually anyway.

I've gone through many bottles. The cats always got more irritable if
they were out.

I tried a diffuser when Nikki was pulling out her fur on her tummy and
legs, but it didn't really help, but then, she was later diagnosed with
hyperthyroidism, and after she was put on medication for that, she
stopped pulling out her fur. Then I plugged in a diffuser the last time
we moved. I can't be sure that it had any effect on the cats, maybe they
would have acclimatised just as quickly without the diffuser. I didn't
use one when I moved this summer.

Then I plugged in the diffuser for a few days when I first got Miranda.
I can't say for sure that that had any effect either. Nikki hissed at
her, which upset her so she hissed at both Frank and Nikki in the
beginning.

I've also noticed that the diffuser has a strange effect on me - I get
hot flashes when it's plugged in! Not nice at all.

LOL, no hot flashes here. But I do notice a slight smell, like incense or
melting wax.

That is usually just when you first plug them in. The smell goes away.

I have tried them and noticed no difference in the way my 4 acted.

Does anyone know if I can get Feliway in australia? I don't usually frequent
pet shops, but our vet didn't have it. It sounds like a really good product,
and i'd like to try some.

I haven't been able to find a supplier over here in WA, but it seems to
be available by mail order from several online vet suppliers.
I haven't bought any because they all seem to charge very high postage -
I usually pay only about $5 or $6 to have something posted to Perth from
the eastern States, but the sites where I found it all wanted $17-$20 in
postage.

If anyone knows of a supplier here on the Western side of Australia
please tell!

A couple years ago, we had a lot of skirmishes between Lizzie & Smokey, so I
decided to try the Feliway diffusers.  It sure calmed down the two hissy
cats, but Weeble, who was about 6-9 months old at the time, freaked.  We had
two diffusers, one in the main living/dining room, one in the master
bedroom.  He wouldn't leave the spare bedroom.office, and when he did, he
was paranoid that he was going to get pounced by this strange cat that he
could smell but couldn't find!  We unplugged the diffusers, and he came out,
but was still wary for a while.  After a few weeks, he was almost back to
normal.  We ended up giving away the diffusers :(

This was probably a one-in-a-million effect.  I'm just putting it out there
that it *could* happen.

Cali wandered around when I first plugged them in. She did appear to be
looking for the mystery kitty, but it did not seem to bother her too much.

It's very hard to know what effect the diffusers are having, if
anything.  I mean, Stinky hisses at the kitten, but he hasn't killed
him yet. ;)  Maybe it has saved Dante's life, but I have no way of
knowing!  ;)

I am thinking about purchasing a few for Finn's return from his neutering.
I bought some spray, but its been less than 24 hours, so I can't really
comment.

So the only measurable effect was on my wallet? :)

It seems as if lots of you have used Feliway for households with more than
one cat.  I was wondering if any of you have used it for unneutered males
spraying.  I am probably going to purchase a dispenser.  I did notice Finn,
making nice with an item I sprayed and then he turned around and well....you
know.  I yelled, "no!", and he skedaddled.

I think they say to treat spots like that twice a day for spraying.
That wasn't our trouble, so I can't comment on efficacy in that
situation.
