Monique Y. Mudama - 11 Oct 2005 15:53 GMT I'm almost embarrassed to ask, but ...
On Friday, I got a temporary crown. It really shouldn't have been any big deal. It was the farthest-back tooth in my mouth, and I have a very small mouth. Anyway, my dentist ended up spending two hours on this, including a break that we both needed, with lots of pulling, yanking, and some scraping where he clearly missed/slid off of the tooth. Ugh. (Apparently I produce an unusual amount of saliva, at least when I'm extremely uncomfortable.)
The upshot is that my gums were so torn up that I haven't eaten anything with a consistency firmer than mac n cheese since Friday. I'm in constant pain. I did see the other dentist at the practice (my dentist was out) on Monday, and he confirmed that there was no infection, just very upset tissue. He suggested taking 800mg of ibuprofin every 6 hours, and gave me a prescription for Vicodin in case my old prescription of Lortab runs out (I only take that stuff at night; I hate the feeling when I'm awake).
I've taken sick days yesterday and today, but I really feel that I need to go in to work Wednesday, no matter what. So purrs, please, that my gums heal up speedily.

Purrs it feels better soon. In my lifetime I have come across a few dentists who were inept. I dumped them fast. My last dentist served me well for about 30 years but now doesn't see very well. I have known a couple of dentist who didn't quit until their 80s. I am now looking for one with good vision. MLB

The good news is that I feel a lot better now. Not only will I go to work tomorrow, but I think i twon't bother me too much to do so.

Christina, thanks for the tip, but I've already been doing this. It has not been nearly as effective, though, as upping the ibuprofin dose to 800mg, which I believe made room for the healing to start by reducing the inflammation. That may all be BS, but that's how it seems, anyway.
My dentist actually recommended this salt swish the day he worked on me.

So purrs, please, >that my gums heal up speedily. OUCH! I feel for you. When I had extensive work done on my teeth ( a bridge, 4 caps and 2 porceline inlays) the doctor recommended 1 teaspoon salt and a capful of hydrogen peroxide in 8 ounces of warm water as a mouth wash. My sore gums cleared up with no problems. Colgate Peroxyl is good, too, for a sore mouth.

Monique Y. Mudama - 12 Oct 2005 05:10 GMT > Purring for your gums to heal and that you will find a better > dentist. MLB I actually chose this dentist because in a lot of ways he is the best dentist I've found. He was willing to help me out on a Friday evening when all other dentists had the day off, and my own on-call dentist told me he couldn't do anything, gee, so sorry. That's one of several reasons I switched to him.
My mouth is very small, and it's not unusual for dentists to have problems working in such a tight area. He was having trouble even finding a drill that would fit in the spot. He also kept talking to the assistant about trying to suction better, so maybe that was the issue.
I don't know. But I am not going to blow off this dentist because he had trouble working in the back of my mouth. If I did that, I would never be able to have dental work.
That being said, a female dentist did my crown on the other side of my mouth, and I don't remember much trouble. Except that they refused to anesthetize the area before pulling off the temp crown; I took one breath and screamed as the air moved over the tooth. Morons.
To be honest, I prefer these several days of pain to the several minutes of agony I had during that experience.

And it's really expensive, and for the most part entirely unnecessary. I get a lot of dental work done, and even the root canal I got on this same tooth didn't bother me much. This was a weird thing.
I did purposely seek out an oral surgeon so that I could be put under when I got my wisdom teeth removed. I was still out for over a week; my body hated that one.

BTW--I did have a crown put on my farthest-back molar on the right bottom, and it was verrrrrry uncomfortable, though there was not alot of gum injury. A big part of it is just having to hold your mouth open that long. My dentist teased about how after a while, patients would get tired and begin biting down on his finger without realizing it. It just takes so damned long. I need to go in for another crown, but dread it.

I said, you know, I've had a crown on the other side, I've had a root canal on this same tooth, and this is the only thing that hurt so bad -- what happened?
Apparently, the tooth was so ground down from the previous dental work that he had to cut away gum tissue to get a good enough impression for the crown mold. Yeah. No wonder it hurt. I just wish he'd told me this at the time of the appointment, as I would have anticipated more pain (would that have helped? I guess I think it would have, to know why and therefore worry less).

The experience was so bad that I'm sure I never would have gone back for the other two, and that would have been bad because they were impacted, generally a disaster, and causing me headaches.
It didn't help that I'd just gotten over an illness so bad I'd been out sick for a week. But I thought, hey, I'm already miserable, might as well get the misery over with all at once. Bad move.

When I had my wisdom teeth out, my jaw was traumatized and I actually couldn't open it wider than about half an inch for several months. I feared permanent damage, but it eventually opened up again.

Mudama - 13 Oct 2005 16:53 GMT > I'm so sorry -- purrs for your poor mouth. Hope you're feeling better now, > Monique! > Christine Thank you so much, Christine and everyone who has sent purrs. They are working. I am now sleeping through 6am (previously, I would wake up at 6am because the pain meds had worn off), and I feel much better. I even ate a real sandwich yesterday evening, and while it was awkward trying to avoid the right side of my mouth, nothing disastrous or painful happened.
Last night my pain med coverage ended at 9pm, and I didn't take anything till midnight, and didn't feel too awful. Today I have only taken two Aleve, a normal dose, to hopefully last the day.
It's weird; from sat-tuesday it seemed there had been zero healing; everything felt just as it did after the initial anesthetic wore off. And yet starting Tuesday evening, it has been healing like wildfire. I have to believe it's the purrs. Thank you.
