We may lose Speckles

Speckles seemed out of sorts the last few days.  Yesterday she ate
nothing the entire day.  She vomited several times.  I decided to take
her to the vet this afternoon (they're open for a few hours on
Sunday).  But by evening she was barfing almost non-stop, only bile
and liquids, and refusing all foods offered.  Can't let her be
miserable any longer and took her to the ER.  Bloodwork was good,
excellent heart, kidneys, liver, lungs.  Then the X-ray.  There is an
unidentified mass in her stomach.  Requires surgery to remove the
obstruction.  She is still at the ER where she is being stabilized
with IV, medication, etc., and we are to pick her up this afternoon to
take her to her regular vet for the surgery.  Without it, she will
die.  With it, she could die from anesthetic or surgery.  She is a
frail, 7-pound, 15-year old kitty.  I'm terrorized just at the thought
of the anesthesia alone.

If you will, please ask your kitties to send some miracle purrs her
way.  Thank you much.

Lots of purrs for Speckles. Even though she is quite old, with successful

Purrs coming that Speckles goes through the surgery well and recovers
quickly.  The anesthesia they use now-a-days (isoflurane(sp?)) is very
good - they come out of it very quickly after it is stopped.  Bandit went
through anesthesia 3 times in 3 weeks at 15-years-old and she did fine!

No you won't. Not with so many purring their hearts out for her. You must
refuse to worry because worry will not help either you or Speckles. You and
your vets are doing the best that can be done for her, and even if it's her
time to leave her physical body, she'll remain with you in spirit.

Betty is sending her purrs that the removal of the mass will go

Speckles must've been put under at least once before in her life if

Good thoughts on the way for you and Speckles. Remember that vets do

not as risky as it used to be.

yes...how is speckles doing....we're getting worried out here..
JBHajos - 11 Oct 2005 13:58 GMT
>yes...how is speckles doing....we're getting worried out here..

I'm sorry I didn't update sooner.  Speckles did well and, barring a
relapse, we can bring her home this afternoon.  We got the results
about 2:00 pm yesterday and I'd prepared a "yippey, hooray, happy
dancing" report for RPCA - then I read about Willow and didn't have
the heart to express all that elation when M.Elizabeth was hurting so
badly.  So thought I'd update today.

Speckles spent Saturday night in the ER ICU being stabilized.  She was
sent to her regular vet Sunday afternoon.  I read the ER chart and the
vet discussed it at length.  The prognosis was grave, Speckles was not
a viable candidate for surgery, removing the mass would leave her with
less than half of her stomach, she'd need a 200-mile trip to have
radiation/chemo, etc, etc, etc, and rather than cause her more pain
and stress, euthanasia was advised.  I vetoed that and opted for the
surgery - I *had* to give Speck at least half a fighting chance.

She was scheduled for first-thing-in-the-morning surgery Monday and
I'd be called when they were finished.  I didn't hear until 2:00 pm -
I was frantic with worry till then - what an awful morning!!  Good
news!!  The Big C was a blasted, gorgeous, beautiful benign
hairball!!!  Speckles is a tough little old lady, thank Bast, and
weathered the anesthesia, recovery was quick, and she was doing great.

This sort of reminded me of Helen's Francis.

All your "miracle purrs" worked wonders and I thank you most
sincerely.  I am indeed grateful for your care and concern.

Love you all -                          Jeanne

It's true!  I mean, any doctor can make a misdiagnosis, but making
such a recommendation when there was even the smallest chance that it
was a hairball - just doesn't sound right to me.

How wonderful!  We definitely do have miracles here from time to time.
It was a sad coincidence what happened to Willow at the same time, but
don't feel bad about the timing - it's good to have a counterbalance.
When Betty was diagnosed with cancer, it was good to read about other
cats here who had better diagnoses.

I've sometimes hesitated to post happy posts when someone has suffered a
loss or had bad news, but then I remember how it was when Nikki died and
coming here and reading happy posts and how it made me feel better. It
gave a feeling that life does go on, however much it felt like it ended
that day. Scritches to Betty. How is she now?

How is Betty?  Thank you for asking - she's awfully cute. :)

The cancer in her jaw seems to be contained for the moment.  It's not
shrinking, but it seems a bit shocked by the barrage of treatments.
Most of Betty's chin fur has fallen out because of the radiation
treatments she went through, making her look like she's 0.1% Sphynx.

She was supposed to get another dose of chemo yesterday, but it was
postponed because her white blood cell count dropped below their safe
threshold.  Despite that, she's very fine.  Betty says she doesn't
need white blood cells or chin fur to run around like crazy, eat like
a pig, and beg for cuddles! :)

Awww! So glad to hear she is feeling so well (must be feeling good if
she's zooming).

It's good to hear she's doing well.  Hugs and purrs,

I'm so glad to hear Betty is enjoying life to the fullest and we hope
she will continue to do so for a very long time.
Lots and lots of purrs and best wishes for the treatments to work,

That's great, Jeanne!  So happy it was not more serious.

See, I told you the purrs would do the trick.

There's a big lesson in your story. I had no idea hairballs could get so big
and nasty but I sure am glad to learn it in case I run into a similarly
stoopid vet someday.

Hooray for Speckles and you! May she recover from her surgery in record
time.

Excellent news!  I was hoping it would turn out to be a hairball.  I'm
so glad you opted for the surgery!

Hooray! I'm so glad to hear Speckles came through so well!  And I'm
glad it was nothing WORSE than a naughty old hairball.  Losing poor
Willow was sad, I'm glad that we didn't have TWO RPCA cats depart over
the bridge. I hope Speckles will recovery swiftly and completely from
her experience.

I just read both your original post and this one.  I am so glad
Speckles is well!

I'm so very happy to hear Specles' problem was "just" a hairball. It's
so important to not give up too soon.
Lots of healing purrs and best wishes for Specles,

I'm sorry That I didn't read this soon enough to send purrs. Its wonderful
that it was a hairball insted of a tumor. Purrs for a fast recovery.

I'm glad she did great, but why didn't then do evasive endoscope? Would have
been cheaper and not surgery.

Good question, Gina.  And it was suggested but, for some odd reason
or another, neither the ER nor our regular vet has an endoscope!  So
surgery was the only way to find out what it was.  Sure wish it could
have been easier on Speckles - so far she's doing quite well though.
Thanks for your concern.

Oops!   To my knowledge, you're the first poster to ever try to
access this SETI thing, so didn't realize there is a problem.  I
checked it out and, lo and behold, there's a *big* snafu with my
account cut off due to BOINC changes, etc.   We now have to re-do the
whole thing and spend most of the morning trying to clear it up.  Will
have to pay more attention in the future - I've been sending/receiving
SETI data for a little over four years with no apparent problem but
it's a biggy now.  Meanwhile, I've deleted the reference from my sig
line, at least until I get back on board.   Many thanks for the heads
up!!!
