I may have a couple of Katrina cats!

I applied awhile back to foster a couple of rescue kitties from
Katrina, and I finally heard from someone.  I have an application to
fill out first, so it isn't definite, but this is something I really
want to do.

Problem is, there are two kittens in the rescue room!   And they have
not been vetted :-(  And I don't know how to get this accomplished
right now.  The Katrina cats will be vetted next weekend by OSU, and
the woman said it would fine to take them after that, and she thought
it was a good idea.  But I still have to somehow get the kittens taken
care of, or I can't keep them all in the same room.  I just don't know
what to do.

We are cleaning the room up today so there is actually space (we were
going to do this anyway so we can let the kittens run around
supervised and get more exercise).  But if the kittens aren't tested,
vaccinated, dewormed and defleaed, I don't see how I can bring the
Katrina cats in here.  It's frustrating, and I cried last night
thinking how much I want to do this, but that I may not be able to.

I am going to call the vet who does the low-cost vaccination clinic
and see if there is any possibility he will do free testing on the
kittens.  I can take some $ out of my dental fund (may as well --
three of my teeth have fallen apart since they took the x-rays, and
the dentist will no longer answer my calls since I wanted to
reschedule the surgery appointment) to get them vaccinated, and if I
can get Advantage and Droncit at low-cost, too, then maybe we can do
this.  Otherwise, I may have to tell them no :-(

Have had a toothache in one of the broken teeth for several days.
Just about been screaming.  Taking some Ibuprofen, but it isn't
helping 100%.

I am not doing so well.

Ginger, I truly admire your wish to help, but don't you think you have
enough on your plate right now without taking on two more fosters?

IMHO  You should get your teeth fixed GL.   Bad teeth can affect your
whole body, to say nothing of your appearance.   MLB

Whether or not you get the Katrina kitties (and it's wonderful that
you want to help), would you have any objections to some of the RPCA
folks contributing to a fund at the vet's to cover some of the
expenses, as we've done for Harri Roadcat, Rocky, Crackles, and a
number of others?  I know you're having a tough time and I'd be happy
to donate what I can.  Your love of all the kitties shines through
splendidly.

Jeanne, bless you, and no, I would not object to any help at this
point.  Kate and Jack need it for sure.  The hurricane kitties, if I
get them, will be vetted through OSU, so there is no charge there.
But the kittens need vaccinated, dewormed, defleaed, and tested.  They
would be much more adoptable if I could get those things done, too.

I am going to call the low-cost vet tomorrow. I think there is a
clinic on Weds. at Petco.  I don't think he can do testing there, but
he can probably bring some Advantage and Droncit, and do the
vaccinations.

Thank you {{{Jeanne}}}

You've been taking care of the kitties for such a long time (and I truly
admire you for that), but the time has come that you have to start taking
care of yourself. Please try to find a dentist that will help you with the
toothache ASAP.
Lots and lots of purrs and best wishes,

I agree with some of the other comments, if you cannot afford medical
care for yourself then you cannot afford to take in any more cats.  It
is important you get those teeth looked at ASAP before something worse
sets in (like an infected jaw).

Okay, guys, you don't know the whole situation, so here it is.

I saw a dentist *two years ago* to set up oral surgery and a bunch of
other dentistry work.  Because of my dental anxiety and health
problems, it was supposed to be set up to be done in the hospital,
under anesthesia (not general, but Versed etc.).  I waited.  And
waited. And waited.  In the meanwhile *three* of my teeth have broken
off to the gumline.

They finally called to set it up.  The first time, they set it for
right before ComFest, which is where I do most of my business for the
year.  So I had to ask them to change it.  Then I set it up, without
thinking, right after Richard's birthday, right as he was still in the
worst of his depression/anxiety, and he got very upset.  So I had to
reschedule one more time, which I did, for July 21st.

Then I had the colonoscopy, under the same meds they would have used
for the oral surgery.  And I woke up during it.  And I have been
diagnosed with PTSD because of it.

I called to ask them if I could reschedule for a couple of months
later, so I could find out what went wrong with the colonoscopy, and
try to get over the PTSD.  They refused to reschedule.  They said they
would put me at the back of the list, once again, and it could be
months.  There was nothing I could say but "Fine."

Then they called me the day before the surgery was scheduled.  They
had NOT cancelled it!  Needless to say, I am sure everyone was very
ticked off, but I thought it was clear that it had been cancelled.

I have tried calling my dentist.  I wrote a letter.  He refuses to
respond to me.

The money left in the dental fund isn't enough to cover it, anyway.
I have dipped into it to pay bills, cat care, and for groceries.   And
it's a whole different thing now anyway, with three teeth broken off
and other problems cropping up.  All I really want now is to have
*all* my teeth removed, and get dentures.  My teeth have been bad
since I was a kid, over 9 of them have alrady been removed, three are
broken off now.  Appearance is the last concern I have.  I have looked
bad since I was eight years old.  I would be delighted to have a full
set of normal-looking dentures.

So I have no dentist, and don't have enough money to pay for it
anyway.  And that's where things stand.

All I can do at this point is try to find another dentist who can do
it with the anesthesia in a hospital, and there aren't very many of
those around.  I certainly am not going to trust a dentist who refuses
to communicate with me because the hospital screwed me over.

And I don't know how I will pay for it, but I will worry about that
when I find a new dentist.  In the meanwhile, there is little I can do
about that.

But I can do something about some hurricane kitties.  That is what
would do my heart good, and is the one thing I can do for the beings
who went through that terrible disaster.

I hope I didn't sound snippy with the last post.  I truly do
appreciate that you folks care about my welfare.  Thank you, it means
a lot.  I just wanted to explain why it isn't as simple as it may
appear.

I didn't want to sound snotty either, or like I didn't care about the
hurricane kitties.  I just remember when I was sick and spending 10
percent of my income on medication and then Kumani's vet bill set us
back a thousand dollars.  I felt obligated to mention that sometimes,
one needs to spend one's money 1. looking after oneself and 2. having
some reserve to look after the animals one already has.

Regardless, I am purring for both the hurricane kitties and so that
maybe you can find a new dentist.

(also kind of paranoid about my teeth, since I was born unable to bite
food, and had to have my jaw/teeth realigned starting when I was 6.  I
now have a moviestar smile, but I also have scars down the back of my
throat and a hole in my tongue.)

Oh, no, problem, Fil, and I just posted under your post because it was
last :-)

Ouch!  re:  your teeth.  That sounds really awful.  I hope it doesn't
cause you any problems?

Not now--not as much as not being able to bite a carrot or chew my food
properly would, had nothing been done.

But the nerves in my mouth are shredded enough that I can now get
cavities filled with no freezing--I simply can't feel the drill.  My
mom wouldn't allow me painkillers as a child so I had to put up with
whatever they were doing.

And for all my piercings, I have no desire to pierce my tongue.  The
hole, (more like a groove or furrow) opens and shuts as I move my
tongue--some people think it's really cool, and others think it's
really gross.
