It was a three cat night. (Groan)

I'm a bit of a restless sleeper, I really like to thrash around when I
sleep. So I always worried that I would knock Smokey's brains out when she
slept under the covers on my feet. But she assured me that she wasn't using
them anyway. :)  I adapted by sleeping with one leg outside the covers and
one leg under the covers, so I could still move around. Smokey finally
stopped sleeping under the covers and took to sleeping on my arm, largely
out of jealousy. This is Cali's favourite spot. This was safer for her and
better for me. The only quirk is that she turns on the heavy gravity device
if I try to move my arm. It takes quite an effort to recover my arm some
nights.

Cali has always been an armpit snuggler. She likes to put her feet against
your body and sleep with her head on your shoulder or tucked against my arm.
This has never been a problem, as she doesn't like movement and will move to
the end of the bed at the first sign of unrest. I think she may have been
caught in a rollover in her younger days. She rarely comes to bed since we
got Smokey, except if it's exceptionally cold.

Cleo is new to the whole bed thing. We kept her locked up at night for the
first couple of weeks, as she hadn't had her tests and we weren't sure how
the cats would react to each other if left alone. The first night on the
loose she did a lot of mewling when she woke up alone on the couch. She
finally found the bed and discovered Smokey tucked under my arm. She sniffed
Smokey to make sure she was still alive and decided this bed thing must be
OK. She spent most of the next day in bed after having breakfast. By the
second night she had decided she was a leg sleeper (not again).

Last night Cali came to bed first to claim her favourite spot (She's been
coming to bed again, since Cleo arrived). Then Cleo arrived to check out the
situation. She had to sniff Cali of course, which brought an immediate hiss.
But surprisingly Cali hung around, despite her dislike of insolence. :)
Finally Smokey arrived, only to discover the best spots were taken. Smokey
will sleep on my left side if Cali is already in her spot (right arm), but
Cali will only sleep on the right side of the bed. Unfortunately she felt
Cleo was too close to her spot on my left, so she had to settle for the
bottom right. She knows Cali never stays long, so she only has to wait her
out. Sure enough Cali left after an hour or so and Smokey got to claim her
prize. That was pretty much the scenario for the rest of the night, pinned
on the right arm by Smokey and the left leg by Cleo.

I've never "slept" ten hours and woke up feeling so stiff. Time to train a
new cat on the proper way to sleep with Hoomans, wish me luck. :)

The bed situation can be funny. Sugar LOVES sleeping on a foot. Mostly
the right foot. When Grant was alive, he would sleep curled on my right
side, Pearl would sleep on my left side and Sugar on my right foot. A
precise order was followed. Grant came up first, Pearl second, Sugar
last. Well, when Grant died it threw all our dynamics for a loop. Pearl
wants often (but not always) to sleep between my legs. This leaves
Sugar in a quandry because sleeping on a foot is too near Pearl. But if
Pearl settles down high enough, Sugar will pick whichever foot is the
direction opposite of how Pearl's head is pointed. If Pearl notices her
being too close, she will pant. Very funny that way, but serious now
because of the coughing episodes. It worries me. However, last night
Sugar would not be denied My Right Foot. She really was very brave for
her and despite Pearl kind of panting at her, she stuck. I sat up and
petted Pearl and told her it was OK. Miraculously, she settled down and
even purred. She eventually got up however and moved a bit. I do not
know what exactly the size of her personal space is, but at least Sugar
got her foot.

Yep, there definitely appears to be a pecking order to this sleep thing.
Cali must be first or she won't show up at all. Smokey prefers Cali's spot,
but she will settle for seconds if she must. Although she's not above trying
to annoy Cali to get her to leave. Of course Cali will not stay if Smokey is
in her space. Smokey seems to be adopting this policy with Cleo now. This
could have something to do with Cleo's tendency for BOPPING, not to be
confused with BOOPING. Cleo is rather new to the whole bed thing and hasn't
asserted her position YET. But I suspect she will be pushing Smokey around
in no time, despite being half her size. She seems to have no fear of other
cats.

LOL! Good for Sugar. Mir-mir occasionally like to lie on a leg or a
foot. Caliban likes to snuggle up on my shoulder, either facing me or
with his back to me. If he's facing me, he treads my neck with sharp
claws, if he has his back to me, he treads my arm with sharp claws. I
always try to maneuvre the covers between us so he has something other
than me to put his claws in. He never snuggles for long though. He moves
further down and presses against my side instead. It's easier to sleep
that way, without the pointy claws and the fur in my mouth.

You might as well train them to juggle!

My 3 cluster around me in pattern that vary with their moods & the
temperature. There's no rhyme or reason to it that I, a mere hoomin, can
detect. I know my place, which is to curl uncomfortably around their
majesties and provide them with the exact amount of body
heat/comfort/reassurance/headrest that they require at that moment.

Servilely yours

Are you suggesting a mere Hooman can't teach a cat anything about sleeping!

Our record is a five cat night.  we had everyone except Pine Cone and QC one
night.  a queen sized bed is not enough.

Perhaps  a  twin bed would work.  One for you -- one for the cats   MLB

Mine was a five-cat night, three times in a row now, since the weather has
cooled. The pattern is: Baby Eyes under the covers, snuggled against my
chest; Abelard, Beatrice and Tommy in a pile behind my butt; and Eli at the
foot, supervising who comes and goes to the litterbox.

Billy & Lily slept on the shelf next to the bed, presumably out of fear of
Eli. But we have progress, at least Billy and Lily are in the same room with
Eli now. Maybe when it gets really, really cold, Billy & Lily will increase
the size of the pile on the bed. Or maybe not, since their coats are so
thick.
