Christine K. - 08 Oct 2005 00:19 GMT We've completed the move (on 24 Sept, actually), got the internet connection back up today - finally. After a long week at work we warmed the sauna, had a pizza and I went to the computer. After some time DH Janne comes and asks if I've seen Nico around lately. I say that I hadn't, but he likes to hide behind bags and boxes we still have around since the move. We both search the apartment from top to bottom, but no Nico to be found. He must have managed to slip outside somehow, even tho we always try to look around when opening either the front or back door. We both try to look for him outside, but hey, it's 2 am here and completely dark, at least behind the house, where he'd most probably gone as there's "wild nature" as opposed to asphalt driveways, parking lots and street on the other directions. He's never been out before! I'm worried sick! I already filed a "missing cat" notice with the Helsinki SPCA (hesy), even remembered to mention he's microchipped. Sure hope he'll find his way home soon! Some purrs might help if there are any to spare...

And I went out on the backdoor steps to call for him during a nightly potty break too. And now I can't sleep even tho I went to bed around 2.30 am last night after an exhausting week at work.
The thing is we have a totally untreated area (trees, shrubs, high grass, no walking paths or anything) behind and on the side of our apartment, which I'm sure is very interesting to a one-year-old boy-kitty. At least there are lots of birdies, don't know what else that I haven't seen yet.

It is not likely that he'd head to the old place as he's so far been an indoor-only cat and that apartment was on the third floor. The distance is... hmmm... some 5 km (3-3,5 miles) maybe. I think he's in the shrubbery close to our house as it's a fairly large area in natural condition. It would seem more interesting to him than boring streets with people walking their dogs.

Shiral - 08 Oct 2005 07:15 GMT PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!
Nico, please go home and reassure your worried family! I hope he turns up safe and well and SOON. Christine, you might check your old residence, to make sure he hasn't turned up back there. Moving is very disorienting for a cat. He may be stressed and confused, wondering where to find all his old familiar things.
Melissa
Christine K. - 08 Oct 2005 07:29 GMT > PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! > [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] > > Melissa The old residence was an apartment on the third storey of a house, I don't think he'd gone there, especially as he's actually an indoor only cat who managed to slip out here. And if he did head in that direction, there are several large roads and a train track to cross in between, so I sincerely hope he didn't.

Just a thought: I once lost Aries (RB) for 24 hours and was pretty despairing (a busy main road was nearby) only to find him in a REALLY impossible place: the sock drawer of my wardrobe. He's crawled in there for a nap one morning and I'd shut it on him without spotting him. He slept throughout, no wails even at being trapped. In fact he was quite indignant at being plucked out and cuddled! He could sleep for England, that boy.
Anyway, keep calm. Perhaps try going through the "wild" area calling for him with a bit of smelly food in hand as an added incentive?

In fact he was quite indignant at being > plucked out and cuddled! He could sleep for England, that boy. We already have looked in boxes, bags, under the bed, in cupboards, cabinets, closets... And the apartment isn't that big, here it's called 3 rooms + kitchen + sauna, English-speakers might identify it with a 2-bedroom (one of which is our computer room) apartment, it has 77 sqm, not sure how that translates into sq ft.
> Anyway, keep calm. Perhaps try going through the "wild" area > calling for him with a bit of smelly food in hand as an added > incentive? We have tried to walk around in the "wild" area, but it's a bit tricky with all that vegetation - shrubs and and such. I just snapped a few pics and uploaded them into my Webshots album under Diverse. The pics are called Asola-view1...Asola-view4 (Asola is the name of the suburb), showing the view from our back door from right to left. As you can see there is plenty of space for a kitty-boy to wander around in.

Otherwise, it might help to put some used litter in a box outside your door. He might be attracted to it as a marker for where he lives. Also, you could show up with food at the same time each day an call for him.
I know this is extremely distressing for you. Most likely a great adventure for Nico. I hope he finds his way back soon. Annie

Surely, he would come out to use the > box or to eat. Laku and Nico have a litter box in common, but I can tell, at least from the "number 2's", if it's from Laku or Nico. He would definitely have been around to eat, he's the kind of boy who doesn't miss a meal. Besides, they have food out all the time.

Christine K. - 08 Oct 2005 18:40 GMT DH Janne saw Nico on the back yard through the window, but when he went to cajole Nico inside, Nico took off again. Either he's scared we'll tell him off for his escapade, or he's just playing with us, "don't think I'll come back just yet". And I have a worry-lump in my tummy all the time. But at least he seemed OK during the quick glance DH got of him, and apparently he also knows where home is.

Christine K. - 08 Oct 2005 19:30 GMT > At least you SAW him! What if you put some special treat food out there. > You may have to trap him. Can you get a "live trap"? We have a feeling he might just come to eat and take off again to explore some more... We did have food out during daytime, but now we have the back door open a cat-wide-crack and keep an eye on Laku. He'd be impossible to find out in the darkness, him being solid black. At least Nico has some white here and there in his blue-grey coat.

How about locking Laku away or putting him safely in a carrier and leaving the back door open overnight? You won't sleep anyway so you could take it in turns sitting up. Just an idea. Nico might come in while it's dark and quiet. You could leave a low light on so you can see him. He has obviously frightened himself with his big adventure, that's why he's so spooky. All appendages crossed here for his swift and safe return. Best of luck, Christine.

Maybe a trail of sardines up > to your door would do it?? > > I am sending you and Nico my strongest purrs. I know how heartwrenching > it is. "Go home NICO!!!" When Boyfriend still headed for the hills when I opened the back door - he had found my conservatory to sleep in overnight - I enlisted the help of the local Cat's Protection League to lend me a live catch trap, there's a member that lives only about a mile away. I call her "Catwoman" she has 70 cats..most of them ferals who would otherwise not be able to be homed. Catwoman swears by either canned sardines or pilchards to catch cats in a live trap, she says they can't resist them, especially if they are in tomato sauce (?)
I already had Kitty FC who forced herself on me, and let's face it, as a pet she leaves something to be desired ;-) So I didn't want another cat, but here was this young one, obviously lost and I wanted to do my best for him. He was unapproachable at the time so to trap him and get him rehomed seemed a good option. I knew he had been a tame cat because he had a collar on. I got the trap and instructions how to use it. One tin of sardines in tomato sauce later it was set up in the conservatory awaiting BF's next visit. Oh, yes, sardines in tomato sauce are irresistible in traps. I looked out of the top of my back door, which has nine panes in it, and I could see Boyfriend. He was partly inside the trap, leaving some of his haunch and tail outside and using his paw to stretch over the treadle to snatch some sardines. If he had touched the treadle the door would have come down and trapped him. The crafty chap got away with all the sardines again and again! Maybe he knew what he was doing, because if I had caught him then he would have been away somewhere else to be rehomed *definitely*
I couldn't catch him in a trap or get near him. I started to put food out, no strings attached, because I worried about him starving. He ate it and ran. I put it nearer and nearer to the kitchen, and then in it. I still thought I would catch him and take him to a cat shelter.
When he came into the kitchen to eat for the first time all ideas of sending him to a shelter just flew out of my mind. I felt honoured. You know the rest.. This is his forever home now.
Did I ever tell you how wonderful he is? And how gentle? and how he never bites or scratches? How lovely he looks right now with his winter coat coming in? I guess I did. To tell you the truth I am a little bit taken with him.. <g> Tweed

You did better than I did one time when Sam decided to spend an extra week camping by himself in Alaska. When Charlie found him and brought him to the door of the camper, I yelled and he jumped and was gone for another two hours.

Christine K. - 09 Oct 2005 06:21 GMT Last night Nico calmed down quite fast enough to let us cuddle him. I also made sure Laku didn't feel left out and cuddled him too. Nico's fur smelled of the Out, like one's clothes or hair would smell after being out picking berries or mushrooms in the forest. Laku has also been sniffing him all over - and then bapping him on the head for good measure. Apparently Laku decided Nico's the same old Nico he's bapped on the head before too. LOL. He ate several times during the late evening before I went to bed and slept a lot of the night in bed with us, between us actually. I had to try to keep DH at a distance by poking my elbow at him, as DH tends to roll around in bed like a rolling pin. Apparently Nico decided some time in the morning hours that he felt confident enough to sleep alone, as when I got up, he wasn't in bed with us anymore but sprawled upside down in one of the living room chairs. Ah, life's back to normal in the Krühn-Nieminen residence. :)
And now that I'm not that emotional anymore I want to thank each and everyone of you for your purrs, good thoughts, advice and support during this fortunately short (but it felt like a lifetime) distressing period. THANK YOU - you are a wonderful bunch of people!!

Still purring trhat he decides to come home. It's surprising how quickly a cat can go 'feral' in that situation; it's like all their natural instincts kick in when they get a small taste of freedom. I hope Nico realises soon how good he had it with you and comes home.
