This morning we woke to an open refrigerator full of room-temperature
food. Lots of stuff had to go in the garbage. I still can't figure out
how the cats manage to open the fridge, but they did.

Suggestion:  check the seals on the doors.  They are probably  losing
their gripping power.  My new fridge grips so tightly, I have trouble
opening it  -- the cat could never do it.  Have you heard of the dollar
bill test?  MLB

Close a dollar bill in the door.  If it stays in place, your seal is OK.
If it falls to the floor, your seals are not working.  Good luck.   MLB

The seals are fine, unfortunately. :)

I'd be inspecting the deli meat packages for teethmarks, especially the ham

I expect the frig. broke down during the night & they noticed
and decided not to let all the foodies go to waste.

If not that, then the duff seals theory has my vote.

Refrigerator has adjustable legs.  Adjusted so that door
will always close automatically; so that refrigerator lean
back slightly.  Yours may not have been lengthened enough in
the front. Then a door not completely shut may slowly open
itself.

Our fridge door won't swing open on its own,  due to the way it is leveled.
But I do have a problem with it not closing tightly.  Always because someone
here is ignoring the laws of physics and there is stuff in the door and
stuff on the shelved fighting for the same space.
