I think fall is finally here

Victor Martinez - 07 Oct 2005 01:54 GMT Today a cold front blew through, finally dropping our temperatures below the mid 90's (mid 30's for those of you with a sensible system). I'm hoping we won't have to turn the air conditioning on tomorrow. :) That also means we might have more than a couple of cats in bed!

Yes, here in Houston it's forecast to be only 79F here tomorrow before going back up into the 90s - I guess I should celebrate our 12 hours of fall in preparation of our 24 hours of winter, then 12 hours of spring before summer comes around again! ;>

Our blooming dogwood tree has leaving turning for fall, berries from the flowers this spring, and buds coming in! I could be wrong, but I seem to remember it having buds last fall, too - maybe the buds start forming in the fall, then go dormant over the winter, in order to get a jump-start on spring blooming?
Yesterday it was 80's F and humid, last night into the 50's F - didn't get much above 65 F today, and now it's back down to 55 F and falling.

Right now it's 50F and will only get to 79F today. (Too bad it was 90F when my electric went out the other day.) Should have the same cooler weather tomorrow. I just brought in some firewood so I can make sure the dampness is off; this evening I'll light a fire. Persia loves to lay in front of the fire! I might even use my fireplace corn-popper and make some popcorn :) But then, as is normal, it will get hot for another week or so before fall really sets in.

I'm >hoping we won't have to turn the air conditioning on tomorrow. :) >That also means we might have more than a couple of cats in bed! Here, it cooler - last night's low was in the mid 40s. The hummingbirds have gone away, putting an end (for this year) to photographing cats interacting (or not) with the birds at the feeder a few inches away from their kitchen window shelf. The trees are turning color.
When I went to bed last night, there were already seven of the twelve cats on the bed. Before the night was over, at least nine had put in an appearance on the bed. One more was on a shelf in the bedroom, one was on my chair in the kitchen, and only one was unaccounted for, and I suspect he was inside somewhere.

Some of the cats sleep in heaps, especially Tigger (18 pounds) and Millie (a bit under 6 pounds), and Dandy with anybody who'll have him.

Queen isn't all that large; on many nights, it seems there isn't even room enough for me and DH to be comfortable on a queen! Oscar, of course, takes up more than 1/3 the space all on her own.

I do have to admit that it does seem crowded at times, especially when one or more of them decides to sleep on top of me, or worse, to walk around demanding more petting. Tigger is particularly stubborn about pushing me around to make room for himself.

We have a queen size bed, and me laying on one edge, Moe with the rest to herself! Needless to say, when I woke, I nearly fell off my 'edge' of the bed!

I don't know exactly how big a queen-sized bed is, but mine is 120 centimetres broad, and with just me and three cats, it's starting to get a bit crowded at times. Both Miranda and Caliban are snugglers. If they're not snuggling with each other, they snuggle up to me. Often I have one cat pressed up against one side and the other pressed up against the other side. Luckily, Frank mostly sleeps on his own pillow next to mine, except sometimes when he curls up around my head.
The other night Miranda somehow managed to pull the sheet off me and hog it all to herself. I had to sleep with just a blanket.

We have a King size, which is 193cm wide and not nearly big enough for two adults and seven cats. :)
> The other night Miranda somehow managed to pull the sheet off me and hog > it all to herself. I had to sleep with just a blanket. Hehehehe... Basho likes to snuggle between the top sheet and the comforter, preferably between my legs. Which means I can't really move. Then Luna sleeps between our pillows and Fez and Rufous join her sometime during the night. Xoxo prefers to sleep by Tom's feet, on top of the comforter, as does Maya. Issa might or might not join us, if he does he might or might not sleep with Basho. Sometimes he piles with Xoxo or with Fez and Rufous.

Mine is nominally 152 by 203 cm, but it's an air mattress so it varies over time with the degree of inflation. It's a little wider than the nominally same size base that once held a soft-side waterbed.

That sounds like Mr. Flea. He'd deny it, but he actually snuggles when I'm not looking. When I finally go to sleep, he's there with bells on to lay on my chest and make it difficult to breath. When I wake up or turn over he either takes off or hits me in hopes that I'll stop moving. And when I finally get him off of me, he stretches that 81cm out over three quarters of the bed. I don't know what his bed-hogging motive is, but I recon it's likely spite.
Azy!
"Unfortunately, I once roomed with a cocker spaniel, and she left a terrible impression of dogs with whomever she met. Her breath was terrible, she reeked of sebaceous oils, she chewed her haunches fanatically, and she was a pathological liar. I learnt quite a few lessons living with her. Firstly, never lay behind a dog who's just dined heavily from the rubbish bin. Secondly, never leave kibble for later if there's a dog about. And, most importantly, never, never trust a cocker spaniel in a balaclava no matter what they tell you." ~~W.C. Humphries II( http://housecatwisdom.blogspot.com/ )
Wayne Mitchell - 09 Oct 2005 15:14 GMT >I don't know what his bed-hogging >motive is, but I recon it's likely spite. More likely, it's professional pride. Cats can't help showing off how well they do this sleeping and relaxing stuff compared to humans. They just shake their heads at anything as big as we are that doesn't even know how to take up the whole bed.

Left to right: Spooky, Dandy, Tigger, Avery, Millie, Maryweather.
All I had to do was move Spooky and Tigger, then slip my feet at an angle between Millie and Maryweather. It did get a bit more crowded before it eased up: there were four more in the room, some of them waiting for me to get in the bed - CJ at my feet, Mudpie on the high self (he was still there when I got up), and Fluffy and Ozy in separate laundry baskets. At one point I woke up to find Ozy on top of me.

You've got an Orangey cat! I used to have an orange cat who was named Mildred but since he was a boy, and it often confused guests, we called him Orangey. It became his official unofficial name. He was a feral neighbourhood cat we had taken in. He later died of lymphoma, but he lived his last year in comfort. When he first became ill his breath began to reek. It was one'a the red-flags that let us know it was time to take him to the vet. We had a poem we used to say to him: Orangey-Porangey garbage pie, kissed the girls and made em die! He was a good kitty.

He just isn't into the cutesy-wootsey stuff. In fact, he's more the intellectual kind. He's practices observation and application: He observes what best motivates humans to open the goody cupboard and then makes practical application of the information learnt.
