Please Purr For My Stinky

My poor boy is just not himself.  He is not bouncing back the way he
should.  There is something not right about him, that I can't put my
finger on.  He seemed to be accepting Dante more and more, but that
process seems to have stalled, and he just is not really acting at
home in his own house.  The fleas and taking him to the vet were
pretty traumatic too.  But I thought he would be perking up a little
by now.  Please purr for my darling boy.  I am worried sick about him.
If I don't seem him perk up in another day or so, I'm taking him back
to the vet.

I am so afraid I have done something really bad to him by bringing the
kitten home.

Purrs on the way. But, although there's always the possibility that he's
really not well, he might just need longer. I'd usually expect it to
take at least 4-6 months after a new feline arrival for things to really
settle down. Especially if Stinky doesn't already know from experience
that a newcomer doesn't mean he's getting the push. My memory's a little
fuzzy and I'm not sure if it's been that long, but I don't think it has.

I know exactly how you feel. I wasn't sure about either of the kittens,
and it did take some time for Frank to accept them. I did worry I'd done
something terrible, but it turned out alright in the end. We are sending
oodles of purrs for Stinky to soon be back to his old lovely self.

Here's hoping Stinky improves soon. You know, it can take *months* for cats
to accept each other. Each is an individual just as we are and just as we
can't expect to be best buddies with everyone we spend time with, it's the
same with cats. With my three Waffles & Francis are fine with each other,
but adding Marble into the equation was fun... not. Marble is a big tabby
tyrant with one brain cell which is geared to finding food. As a result,
Waffles loathed Marble from day 1. It took *months* for a certain tolerance
to settle between them. They'll never be best buddies, but they tolerate
each other. Thankfully I've space enough where they aren't fighting for
space, but they'll never be best buddies. Patience is the key.

Cheers, helen s

Please don't kick yourself! Poor Stinky has had a devil of a time of it: the
vet, fleas, and this little newcomer, well they must be throwing him for a
loop but good! Take care of the health matters, and give Stinky lots of good
kitty-love. He'll come around to Dante, I think. It really can take months
for two cats to get used to one another. Ours still have territory issues,
and still get into squabbles. They're not much different from two-legged
siblings in that regard. Stosh and Roxie are always arguing, but when we
brought Brandy home from the vet last week they were licking her, cuddling
with her and caring for her, without one nasty word being exchanged.

It was no mistake to bring into your home a little one who might have never
known love and good care but for you. Eventually, as Stinky feels physically
better and more secure in his "place," he and Dante will at least come to a
certain cordial understanding. I wonder if he is a bossy cat, or as our vet
put it an "alpha male" like Stosh. Our vet said to let Stosh roll with his
alpha tendencies; to try and wean them out of him would have been against
his nature and caused more harm than good. As a result Stosh is territorial,
but protective of the Ladies. It may well be so with Stinky too. As with all
things, patience will bring its rewards. Just love him like crazy and he'll
come around.

Blessed be,
Baha

A bunch of purrs are on the way for Stinky.  For you too.  I'm
sure he'll be fine.

BTW, our Speckles and Hobo still take swats at each other after
more than 12 years together.  They mostly tolerate their togetherness
but just barely.  Not to worry, though, nothing dangerous or serious.

I've gotten to the point where I am really worried, and wonder if his
unhappiness over Dante might be making me overlook something else.  He
just is not himself.  He looks so miserable.  He spends more time than
usual meatloafed and his coat is just not right.  That's what really
worries me.  His coat is usually incredibly smooth and shiny, and now
it is all messy and dull.  Relatively.  For him.

Thanks all for the purrs, keep 'em coming.

You are right to keep an eye on him, and I would be worried too.  But isn't
this the time of year when their winter coats start to come in and make them
look kind of ragged for a month or so?

Please don't go borrowing trouble ... the kitten probably has nothing
to do with Stinky's malaise.  But definitely bring Stinky to the vet
so the vet can tell you him/herself.

We will purr for him just in case he's ill, but it just might have been a
shock for him to have another kitty in the house when he'd been the only one
for so long.

You haven't.  If he doesn't improve, like you say a vet check is in order,
but it could be that he is just sulking for the moment, and will be glad of
a little naughty companion eventually.  He's had you to himself for a long
time, hasn't he?  It must be a shock to share you.
Lots of skritches for Stinky, and BF sez remember your mommy loves you best,
bruv.  Alldertime honestly.

Purrs for Stinky.

Sometimes it just takes cats awhile to really get comfortable, even
when they like it each other.  Some take to each other immediately,
while others can take weeks or even longer to be okay.  Hang in there.

We've had hordes of cats over the years, and their reactions to newcomers
differ. But one thing has been constant - after a new feline family member
enters the picture, after varying periods of adjustment, the cats have
settled down to their previous normal lives. Sometimes, inter-cat
animosities grow and continue. Like Emily's for Sophie. We have to keep them
divided in the house or Emily goes into attack mode. But we've learned to
live with this, and endure what we call twice-daily "cat swaps", where Emily
gets the upstairs and Sophie gets the downstairs and vice versa. Stinky may
be jealous of the attention you're paying the new kitten, and be reacting in
a surprisingly human fashion. But in time, if our experience is any
indication, he'll probably get over it. But I understand your feelings.
We've been there. Best wishes to you and the kitties.

> My poor boy is just not himself.

Many purrs for Stinky.

Don't blame yourself or the kitten.  after all, the kitten needed a
home too!

When we first got the bits, we had an awful time because usually we had
nox on our head at night and during that time she wouldn't even come
into the bedroom at all because that's where the HELL SPAWN slept in
their box!  She'd hiss and spit just walking by the door.  Within a
month, those kittens were her right and left hand (paw?) "men" in the
feline-world-order...

Purrs for Stinky. I really don't think you did anything bad bringing
Dante home. You also have to keep in mind that coincidences happen as
far as timing goes. I really hope that you see him bouncing back from
the whole flea incident soon. Is he eating OK? Any particular signs?

Purrs for Stinky, I'm sure he'll be OK.

Perhaps your mom could take Dante for a few days to put your mind at ease.
If Stinky doesn't perk up right away, you'll know Dante is not the problem.
