Update Computer Problems OT

Thanks to the people who responded to my earlier post.   I don't seem to be
able to answer posts owing to something odd with OE.  When I hit reply a
window from Incredimail comes up without the ng. addy on it.   The machine
has been away again and now is minus the sound, more groans.

However I am going to buy a new computer - the cost doesn't bother me, I
want a machine that will do everything but sing, lol.   Think I'll replace
the old monitor with the largest one available.   I'll replace my printer
with one that will do copying as well, any thoughts on this would be
appreciated.   I have 7-year-old  Epson at the moment.  Think I'll also get
broadband.    I have dreaded the hassle changing computers which is the
reason I haven't done so earlier but seeing I have lost a lot of precious
data and am at sea with everything anyway I might as well go for it now.

My old machine is a Intel Pentium 11 Celeron 400 CPU originally with 64 RAM
and 6.4 hard disk.   I had it upgraded a year or so back to 256 DDR Memory.

I guess I need heaps more room on hard disc as I want to get a CD burner and
get some decent music.

In the meantime I am also minus Yahoo Messenger as I don't seem able to sign
it so my ng contacts are out at the moment.

I think whatever you get you'll be happy with. As for broadband, once you
have it you'll wonder what you did without it ;-) Personally I'd go for a
seperate printer and scanner, though a combo would of course take less room.
Purrs you get it all sorted soon then we can read more stories of B & C and
Fluffy SP.

Well, we can all have problems.  I cannot talk to my website or alter
anything on it via broadband.  I do have an old dial-up account and that
is the only way to talk to my website.  Ludicrous.

Adrian,  I have now mastered the reply problem.   I noted your comment earlier
about a DVD burner - it might be worth considering, although I don't have a DVD
player yet.

Do not meddle in the affairs of cats, for they are subtle and will
piss on your computer.   Bruce Graham

Bev,

I ordered a DVD+/-RW drive for the purpose of doing backups.  DVD's hold a
lot more data than CD's and the price has come down, but it will write to
CD's too.  Once I get the blank DVD's I ordered I'll tackle replacing my
existing CD-ROM drive with this one.  Then I'm going to back up my data and
reformat the hard drive and restore the opsys with the recovery CD that came
with the machine.

Regarding the printer, I have a Dell combo printer/scanner/copier and I love
it.  There's not a lot of room for me to have separate components for
scanning and/or copying.  The price on the combos has come way down, too.
Good luck!

Jill

(My computer is also a Dell.)  Prior to this Dell printer I had an Epson
combo printer and it worked fine, too, until I got a little heavy-handed on
the release lever for the black ink cartridge and broke it :(

We bought a DVD writer recently too for the same reason - backups. Nice
to know that I won't lose all my cat pics if something goes wrong ;)
But seriously, it is a real pain when something dies, you can lose so
much stuff....

We have two "combo" (including fax) machines. One of them "lost" the
fax component when a lightning storm caught us unawares. (We had just
moved in and hadn't put the lightning protector in place - Murphy's
Law). Anyway, it worked out cheaper to buy a another, smaller combo
machine than repair the big one, so DH uses the bigger one, (cos
everything else still works) and I use the smaller one. I find them
really convenient. If you need to make a quick copy of something, or
send a fax, it saves a lot of time. The scanning facility is also
useful. Ours are both HP, BTW.

Cheers
