Chester's home and chipped

Hi all:

Well, I finally got to go and pick Chester up.  I called "Chester-cat" when
I saw him being carried down the hall in his carrier and he actually did a
wheelie in the carrier.  He's was purring and rubbing the cage, though a
mite unsteadily.  He's still wobbly though is enthusiastically rubbing
against everything to mark that he's home.  He's hanging around the food
bowl though TED said that he can only have a teaspoon tonight.  Poor
starving guy.

He was 13.1 pounds, down from his high of 14.2 and up from his fighting
weight of 12 pounds.

His teeth were filthy and he was working on a nasty case of gingivitis;
however, there were no loose teeth that needed to be pulled or anything.  I
gather that we got him in just in time.

While he was there, I remembered about wanting to get him chipped, so I
phoned in that order and they were able to do it today too.  Canada is all
standardized I gather so there was just one kind available.  Not sure which
one right now.   So, now he's tagged, tattooed & chipped.  Of course, he's
the one that never gets lost ....

Anyway, 10 days of clindamycin capsules (at least we'll be able to see them
if he spits them out) and we're done.

Thank you so much for your understanding.  I was a nervous wreck and you all
can understand.

{{{{hugs to all}}}

I read Chester Cat as Cheshire Cat, and with the results of his
dental, he still has all his teeth!  =)

They do such good work with cat teeth these days; it's so
encouraging. Shamrock has a broken fang and at his dental he didn't
need it pulled. The vet sealed it with a porcelain filling.

All kitties here are getting 'chipped at their next visits. Rhett
had to go last night for swollen paw pads, but he can't get his one
year shots until December so at that visit, he and Scarlett are
getting chipped.

Cue in Fez. He just jumped next to me to tell me that he's also a poor
starving guy. Mind you, the bowls are full with food here. :)

Sounds like a good weight to me!

We're very happy to hear Chester is back home and purring away for his mom!

I'm glad that Chester is home safe and sound.  I was confident he
would be.  Betty was recently anesthetized practically four weeks in a
row, when she had her biopsy, followed by her course of radiation.
She seemed very much herself after each episode, so I started to trust
that they knew what they were doing.

When Betty was on antibiotics, the vet gave me Clindrops, which are
liquid.  If you think that would be easier to give, I think it's the
same thing.

Purrs. Clindamycin is a perfectly good antibiotic, but there should be
a caution when prescribed. Diarrhea while on an antibiotic should never
be ignored, but when on clindamycin, it's a potential emergency. Not
every case of diarrhea with this drug is pseudomembranous
enterocolitis, and not all case of the disease are caused by
clindamycin.

Pseudomembranous enterocolitis is caused when normal gut bacteria get
killed off by an antibiotic, and one particular nasty one (Clostridium
difficile) grows in the absence. This organism can cause loss of the
lining of the intestine. The good news is that the disorder is
treatable, but earlier the better -- oral metronidazole is now the drug
of choice, succeeding the much more expensive oral vancomycin.

Thanks Howard.  I just found Chester's first capsule split on the floor
where he had chewed it and spit it out.  I then picked it up without
thinking, since I have a nasty allergy to the stuff.  Since I didn't eat it,
I think I'll survive though :-)

I don't quite get why he needs the antibiotics.  There were no extractions.
I understand that it will help to prevent infection; however, I wonder what
the odds of infection are after teeth cleaning, particularly contrasted
against the pain and agony of pilling him.

I know that people prone to infection are supposed to be on
antibiotics even for routine cleanings ....

Thank you Monique - I had forgotten that.

Glad to hear that Chester is home and doing fine. That reminds me
I better go brush Rusty's teeth. Rusty's microchip is with Petnet.
The Ottawa Humane Society chipped him before he was put up for
adoption.

Delighted that it all went so well (better than for my Bandit
& Snowball who lost teeth as I didn't catch them quite in
time). Purrs for his speedy recovery.

All these thing happen in the New World while I am asleep at night.  then I
am out at work, then out Monday night and other things happen overnight too!
So, it's all over and I never got chance to send puurrs.  I'm so glad he's
okay.

Same here - and I've been so occupied with Frank, I've fallen behind on
rpca (again! I remember a time when I was always caught up. What
happened?). We've had our fair share of dental problems here, so belated
sympathy purrs on the way, both for Chester and his worried Meowmie.
