-L. : - 17 Sep 2004 06:59 GMT Anyone see the crappy Energizer commercial where the brat almost puts the cat in the dryer? NOT funny! If you want to complain about it, please follow this link:

thanks,

"I think the commercial regarding the little brat that almost puts the cat in a dryer is in VERY poor taste, is giving other brats suggestions that could lead to the horrible death of a beloved pet, and should be pulled immediately from production."
Here is the answer I got from them:
"In response to concerns regarding one of Energizer's new spots in which a mother intervenes on behalf of the family cat to keep him out of harms way:
'Our new spots depict how every day people overcome life's daily challenges to keep going. In the case of the mother of four young children, she moves through the house with baby in arms to break up a food fight, end an art project on the wall, disrupt a gymnastics display on the couch and rescue the family cat. It is all in a day's work for a busy mom. Through it all she keeps her cool and keeps going.
We apologize if we have offended anyone with this spot. We wanted to show how much of a hero moms can be. These commercials were filmed in New Zealand and the Humane Society of New Zealand was invited to be present during the filling.
At no time was the cat mistreated and all proper care was maintained at all times.'"
Now does that sound like they even read what I wrote??? I didn't express concern about the treatment of the cat (which I am sure was just fine), I expressed concern about the message this commercial was sending and they totally ignored that in their response.

No, it doesn't. It does sound exactly like the answer I got though, in fact my answer was identical. Don't these people use their brains? Someone must have said at some early point in the process, "Is that scene really a good idea?" I suppose it was a matter of 'corporate think'. Once the ball really got rolling, no one had the nerve to speak up against it any more.

Magic Mood Jeep? - 17 Sep 2004 16:03 GMT First I saw the commercial the first time, Mother grabbed cat away from the brad before s/he could get it into the dryer. That's the only time I saw that *version* of the commercial. Next time I saw it, there was no cat, and mother was taking a wire basked full of (now broken & dripping) eggs out of the dryer. Poor eggs didn't have a chance! ;)

In a dryer, you can make scrambled eggs for a hundred at a time -- harder to clean than a frying pan though. And picking out the shells is such a hassle.
I'm sure it was letters and e-mails that got them to change their commercial.

Magic Mood Jeep? - 19 Sep 2004 00:56 GMT I dunno - I saw both versions the same day - during the same TV show, even, within the same 1-hour time-spot.

The ad (you might have seen it) depicted a lion hiding under a cheesy ghost costume (the old blanket with eyes cut out). The point to make was that even though we have a new name, we will be easy to recognize. However, apparently some folks realized that the blanket on the lion could be interpreted as a KKK thing, so we pulled the ad. Not only that, but the company ordered sensitivity training for the ad agency and requested that the creative people responsible for that ad never again work for us. They replaced the ghost costume with a mardi gras mask, same lion though. :)

They had was looked like 2 *real* dead rats, with bulging eyes, and ugly teeth sticking out of their dead mouths, playing guitars and singing is a screeching, Mexican-accented voices, super-imposed on pictures of their restaurants.
Now, whoever thought dead rats were a good promotional idea for a food service company should hang it up right now and never do business in advertising again.
I guess they got a number of complaints about the ads because they suddenly (thank goodness!!) stopped airing them.

Karen - 17 Sep 2004 16:36 GMT I *never* could figure out how someone thought that was a good product mascot. Now, I have to say, I do find the hot dog for Wienerschnitzel ads hilarious. There is one where he is stretched out in a hammock on a tropical island and settling saying how peaceful and restful it is when you hear the sound a boat and a guy saying on a bullhorn saying "You will be here for 30 days. You must make your own shelter, and you must find your own food....." and the hot dogs eyes snap open. It's hilarious.

Of course. Your email contained the word 'cat' and 'commercial' which matches up in their database with the auto-reply 'The cat was okay during the filming of the commercial'.
P.S. I'm not sure who's seen it but Energizer has been putting out commercials where a mailman goes through a hurricane to deliver mail. Not fun for people in Florida.
po - 18 Sep 2004 01:23 GMT You're right. They didn't read your message. Just replied with a form letter.

i haven't seen the commercial, but cruelty-through-ignorance/stupidity isn't a great thing to use in an ad... put the kid in the wishywashy machine... heh heh...
