I should know this stuff after being here so long. Could someone please
define the following terms or phrases?

Greebling
Moggie
Plonk
Sock-puppet
Spank (I think this is an internet thing.)
Spoof (ditto)
Spoon (as in had one's spoon taken away, mentioned on some recent posts
which had little if nothing to do with cats.)

And which of these require myself to be armed with recipes?

Blessed be,
Baha

> Greebling

Invisible "monsters" or "mice" that cats love to hunt.  Toilet Paper
Greeblings are dispatched by destroying their hiding place:  a roll of
toilet paper.  There are visible greeblings as well - the Red Dot Greebling
is the red dot created by a laser pointer.

> Moggie

A term for mixed breed cat, or a breed of unknown origin, generally used in
UK, but is an accepted term in US as well (just not as widley used).

> Plonk

A way of notifying the group that the original poster of a thread (troll, or
someone they just don't like) has been added to a kill-file.

> Sock-puppet

A way of saying that someone is always agreeing with someone else.  A
sockpuppet, in the literal sense, is a sock with someone's hand up its
_______, and therefore always says what that someone wants it to.

> Spank (I think this is an internet thing.)

A way of saying that person got reprimanded or humiliated on a public forum

> Spoof (ditto)

Spoof isn't just an internet thing.  It's basically saying that it's a fake.
Like a Mel Brooks movie - "Blazing Saddles" isn't a western, it's making fun
of westerns. A mock-up, if you will.

> Spoon (as in had one's spoon taken away, mentioned on some recent

Not sure of this one, but probably means the same as taking the microphone
away from a lunatic that's ranting about what he/she sees is *the* way to do
somthing.  I think this comes from the fact that a lot of closed-door
lip-syncers use a wooden spoon inplace a microphone.

There's a net-specific meaning, too.  Spoofing is when you fake the
headers on your messages to look like they're coming from another
account.  You can use them to try to disguise your identity or to look
like your posts are coming from some known person.

You know all those emails you get asking you to send personal
information to your bank?  The From address looks right at first
glance, but in fact it is spoofed.

Just a slight adjustment, Nancy-- this can be true, but also on the
net,  sock puppets are the various posting identities of one troll.
Some trolls launch several sock puppets, and have them have
discussions, among themselves, to make the illusion that the group is
being invaded by a large group of trolls.  Sometimes they even create
arguments and fights among the sock puppets, or give one sock puppet
the "identity" of a reasonable-seeming group member, to gain the trust
of the group.  We've just been treated to quite a display of
sock-puppetry ourselves.

I know - just didn't feel like trying to explain that one myself - knew
someone would find a way that wasn't too gawd-awful confusing :D

> Greebling

Invisible creature who are the sworn enemy of all cats everywhere - only the
"red-dot" greebling can be seen by humans, in fact they always seem to
appear when the humans pull out a metal device and point it all around the
room at the red-dot greebling.

> Moggie

UK term for a mixed breed cat.

> Plonk

Let's the group know that you are placing someone in your "kill file" so you
won't see any more posts by that person.

> Sock-puppet

This is when someone creates a fake account and then posts to a newsgroup
(usually agreeing with themselves in their "normal" persona).  It comes from
the allusion to putting a sock on your hand and then speaking "for it" as if
it were another persona when it is actually you doing all the talking.

> Spank (I think this is an internet thing.)

This is newsgroup speak for humiliating someone in a public forum so
thoroughly that they often quit posting.

> Spoof (ditto)

This is when you imitate another person's identity so that people on a news
group will think it is them and not you posting.

> Spoon (as in had one's spoon taken away, mentioned on some recent posts
> which had little if nothing to do with cats.)

This comes from the expression, "If you can dish it out but can't take it,
then hand in your spoon."  In newsgroup it usually refers to someone who has
been flaming someone else and then gets offended when he, in turn, gets
flamed.

> And which of these require myself to be armed with recipes?

All but the first two.
