Persia Understands English

jmcquown - 30 Sep 2005 23:43 GMT It never ceases to amaze me. Maybe it has ceased to amaze you with your kitties and whatever your native language is.
Persia fully understands phrases, the primary one being "It's not time yet!" Most of you know the vet put her on a diet because she'd gotten quite fluffy despite being on Hill's x/d to avoid oxolate crystals after bladder surgery in 2004. She adores those crunchies! She's adapted pretty well to the 1/2 cup a day diet (1/4 cup 6AM and 1/4 cup 6PM) but this doesn't stop her from trying to coerce me.
If I head anywhere in the direction of the kitchen where the pantry is, regardless of the time of day, she will march off towards it ahead of me. I know what she's doing. And I say, "It's not time yet." She literally halts in her tracks. She doesn't visibly sigh or complain, but I can see it her her posture... she's thinking drat! I thought I could fool Mommy! Sorry, Persia, Mommy knows it's not time yet. :)
Sometimes I go in and find she's opened the door to the pantry. She hasn't figured out how to undo the zipper-lock on the bag of crunchies, though. She's too much of a lady to try to chew through the double layer plastic bag. She's not starving, trust me.
A funny thing she did today. I'd been cleaning the kitchen and went to take a bath. Persia sat on the toilet seat, watching me. This time she didn't chatter at me or try to show me how to bathe. She was in meatloaf position except she kept reaching out with one paw, sort of in the direction of the tub, reaching out, flexing her paw and pointing down. It was almost like she was trying to give me a silent instruction, "Get out of the tub, now!" What the heck?!
She's so sweet. She gets her other bowl of crunchies in 20 minutes so she should be happy... until the next time I walk in the general direction of the kitchen! <G>

jazzy_azy@yahoo.co.uk - 30 Sep 2005 23:57 GMT Hi Jill,
I'm new to the forum, but I'm forced to agree on the language thing. I don't think all cats are clever enough to speak the native tongue, but I know my Fleasle gets it when I say 'you better get down' or 'gimme some sugar, Flea.'
Actually, and I don't want you to think I'm a lunatic, but I think my cat knows a little more than I give him credit for. I've suspected for some time that he's been writing an agony column while I'm sleeping. I ran across one that has pictures that look identical to him, and the attitude is very similar. Furthermore, the likeness in name is uncanny

Persia also understands "Come take a nap with mama" if I decide to nap in the afternoon and "Sleepy-by with mama" at night time. In both instances she comes running to snuggle up next to me. She's a very snuggly girl who was abandoned and claimed me as her owner in 2001 :)
Welcome to rpca! (and please, ignore some of the trolls and flaming which has recently invaded this newsgroup... most people here are good people).

Woah. I gotta say, Jill, that's a first. Then, you haven't known me long. We'll see whatcha gotta say in few weeks. ::grin::

When I got Fleasle he hadn't been abandoned yet, but he would'a been better off so. His story's posted on Housecat Wisdom (written from his own point of view, mind you.) It's really way too long to post here, but if you get a chance to peek it out, go for it. Anyway, he's really way too clever for his own good. Then, sometimes he's really way too stupid for his own good, as well. Mine, too, in fact. ::thinking of the cabinet incident::

Thanks!

Don't worry about me, Jill. I don't feed trolls. I've had my fair share of trouble with that kind before, and I know for a fact that starving 'em out's the only effective means of extermination.
Look forward to posting! Azy!

ShirleyB - 01 Oct 2005 05:28 GMT Rexie does the same thing and it's driving me nuts! I still haven't gone to the 1/4 cup twice a day. I still do the 1/8 cup 4 x a day. But I keep thinking if his tummy were a little fuller . . . . . But then he'd be pouting more. He won't even come and jump up on me anymore like he used to. I keep telling him it's the d__n vet that's making me starve him, not my idea!
But he did just have his yearly checkup and he's lost a full pound. That's something anyway!

He probably wishes he knows how to open a can of his cat food. Doesn't even need a can opener. Just flip the lid off. He knows where his food is kept and goes to sniff it. This morning after I put his food out on his plate, he followed me into the bathroom. I told him to go eat his breakfast and he left the bathroom. I think he also understood me Whenever I said 'come on', he would come to me. I discovered this by accident. I was watching a track and field competition and was yelling 'come on' to the TV and Rusty came to me.

I've told this story before but what the heck, I'll tell it again <G>
When I was adopted by Persia, before her bladder problems, I bought her Fancy Feast (FF). She only got a can of it on Saturday as a treat; the rest of the week she ate dry kibble. But she knew where I kept the FF. So one SUNDAY she opened the door to the pantry (the shelves are offset to the left and I have my kitchen trash can sitting inside by the door). She maneuvered around the trash can, picked out a can of FF off the shelf, which is 2 feet off the ground. Amazing considering the cans of chopped green chili peppers are the same size cans as the FF but they have amazing noses, don't they?
She scooted the can to the middle of the kitchen floor. Then she sat down and just waited for me to walk into the kitchen. When I did, she issued a plaintive "MEOW?" and I busted out laughing. Persia, it's *Sunday*! She didn't care. She wanted that FF. Of course I caved. Just that once!
Poor baby can't eat FF anymore. But she doesn't seem to mind her prescription kibble at all, which is why she's on a diet. In fact, when I bought the canned version of the x/d she'd eat a little and then turn her nose up. At $25/case for the cans, even with the free food coupons, I'll keep giving her the dry stuff. The vet doesn't see a problem with it. And as long as she's happy and healthy, I don't either. (I do occasionally sneak her a bit of fish when I cook it... just a tiny bit!)

polonca12000 - 02 Oct 2005 12:47 GMT Persia is so clever to find her FF. Soncek only eats dry food also. He doesn't touch wet food, no matter what brand. Best wishes,
