Purrs for my Brandy

singh - 27 Sep 2005 04:12 GMT I don't know if she's got a whopping hairball waiting to make it's presence more, ah, public, or if it's something more sinister... I know she has an appetite. Yesterday she marched right up to Louie and took a bite out of his peanut butter sandwich. He did not offer it to her, but the little Juvie just helped herself. She has a mighty interest in food. She comes running when she hears the chow call, she'll be all over one of us if we have a fist full of dry food, but when we put it down for her she sniffs and goes, "Feh...!" This morning she threw up some clear mess, then loudly cleared her throat several times, like something's stuck. And when I gave her the hairball remedy (like fish-flavored Vaseline in a tube) she munched it down before I could blink. Her behavior is otherwise normal, still waking me up in the morning, still playing, but she's a tad lethargic. I'm a madly worried mama! She's barely a year and a half old, and I want my little-bit to be with me a while! I'm calling the vet tomorrow. In the meantime, everyone I've spoken with, who has long and involved experience with cats, is telling me she has an almighty hairball, that the symptoms seem to match, including this mild lethargy. Please pray and purr for my baby. I'm going bats with this, she's usually so wild.
Blessed be, Baha
ShirleyB - 27 Sep 2005 04:13 GMT Yes, it sounds like a hairball to me, too. Rexie does that, throwing up kind of clear liquid. Then pretty soon, I'll find a hairball under the table or somewhere else hard to reach!

> I don't know if she's got a whopping hairball waiting to make it's > presence more, ah, public, or if it's something more sinister... I know [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] > Blessed be, > Baha singh - 28 Sep 2005 03:21 GMT We were both wrong: I thought it was a hairball, Louie thought constipation (bacause a day or so ago she dropped a load that was so dense, it literally stood on end!) It seems that Brandy has some oral thing going on, and I'm kicking myself for missing it. Apparently she's got a nasty little gum abcess. It's far back there, and while I check the kids' gums as best I can, she fought like hell when I tried to look further back. The vet (Dr. Scott Newman, Georgetown Animal Clinic, Williamsville NY. If any of you out there ever move to the Buffalo area, go to these doctors. They are world-class, and much knowledge and treatment of feline diabetes in recent years has come from this office. I'd trust them with my own life as well as the cats'.) Now I know why! So tomorrow we take her to get her teeth cleaned, and get the nasty stuff drained out. The estimate...at best, $850. At worst, $1150. We had a CAreCredit account that I thought we had closed, but apparently we had not gotten our last payment on time because we owe maybe 50 bucks, and I pray to all the known names of God that if they closed it and put it in paydown mode, that we can get the thing reopened. Otherwise, we'll have to play juggle-the-checkbook with the vet (who kindly offered to let us make a down payment--Lord, how I hate making my Bit sound like a damned car loan!--and pay off the rest within the month.) Can these be reopened in the event that the SOB's did close it?
I'm such an a.s, because here I am bitching cash! I want my baby girl better, damn it. Am I so freaking petty as to worry about pricetags? Do people with human babies freak out at the pediatrician's office? I'd sooner pull my own teeth than let my little cubs hurt.
She does have an appetite, and what an appetite! The vet gave us this prescription can food for dental trouble. We didn't want the other kids to steal, because they have no sense of propriety whatsoever, so we sequestered her in the computer room with a dish of water and her litter. And I opened the can and scooped it all out on a saucer. Brandy didn't even wait for me to set the food on the floor to jump at it! She put her front paws up on a box and started wolfing, with the plate still in my hand. She ended up scarfing it like there was no freakin' tomorrow. I tell you, we could right away see a difference. It was like Brandy had this look on her face that said, "Well, it's about time you listened to me, you two-legged yutzes." When I came home from work tonight, Brandy was there to meet me at the door, her eyes brighter, her attitude more her usual friendliness. She already has more energy. She wolfed down more chow tonight, more than we've seen her eat in days. I think we all feel like a weight's been pulled off.
Of course, this doesn't keep me from worrying about tomorrow, even though we have some of the finest vets to be found in the area. I am a natural worrywart and stressbag. I would be like my own mother, anxiously chasing her kids around to look at their turds after using the can, even when the kid's in high school. Can you tell I come from Old-Country Poles? We'll put the car payment on deferment if necessary, so long as my baby girl gets better; I'll pay the late fees on anything, I don't give a rat's @$$. I want my kitten better! What can they do, repossess my wedding rings? Screw the jeweler, this is MY baby, the one who picked me! Because I'll swallow the rings, and believe me no one will want to grab them a day or two later!
I'll keep y'all posted. In them meantime, keep those purrs a-coming, because my Brandy's already feeling better.
Blessed be, Baha
CatNipped - 28 Sep 2005 03:33 GMT > I'll keep y'all posted. In them meantime, keep those purrs a-coming, because > my Brandy's already feeling better. > > Blessed be, > Baha Purrs coming for Brandy's tooth extraction to be easy and that she gets well quickly.
Don't feel bad about worrying about the vet bill, that's understandable, that's a lot of money!! As far as mothers worrying about pediatrician's bills - well, human health insurance is *much* better than pet health insurance so there's usually not as much to worry about.
Baha, if you'll post the name and phone number of your vet I can help out a bit. Because of what DH and I are dealing with, it can only be *just* a bit, but if a few of us here can pitch in it adds up quickly.
Something I'm having to learn myself (or maybe it's the Xanax talking ;>)... don't worry about tomorrow, take care of today and tomorrow will take care of itself. I don't know how we're going to handle taking care of multiple families for a year or so, but I'm sure we'll manage - we don't have any other choice, do we? ;>
Hugs,
CatNipped
singh - 28 Sep 2005 04:04 GMT You are proof that there are angels in this universe, and I hope that our Divine Creator shall bless you a hundred times more than you have just blessed us.
Our vet is Dr. Scott Newman of the Georgetown Animal Clinic, Williamsville NY, 716-633-7123. I wish I could remember their website...they are wonderful people, and Dr. Scott is so gentle with our cats that I could never refer to him (or his equally gentle, humane father at the same place, Dr. Harry) as "The Evil Doctor!" We could not get into Brandy's mouth to check her (we check all the cats for gum trouble, tartar etc.) but Dr. Scott was so good and delicate with my baby that he was able to find that nasty thing and keep Brandy calm at the same time. The clinic usually scares the sam-hill out of her.
Your kindness is more than we deserve, and we thank you. Brandy's up here now, taking a nice peaceful snooze. I think she says thanks too!
Blessed be, Baha

[quoted text clipped - 13 lines] > Blessed be, > Baha I just called it in. I just *love* when I do this and I hear either surprise in the voice of the receptionist - or astonishment that I'm the 20th or 30th person to call (I got surprise this time since I seemed to be the first - but I told her to, hopefully, expect more calls).
As I said, I couldn't contribute a whole lot, but if others here could contribute just a little it certainly adds up fast and can help save a life.

singh - 29 Sep 2005 04:42 GMT Your kindness and sacrifice toward this sweet little girl, whom you've never even met, is just amazing to me. I hope to be able to do you--all of you--as good a turn someday. I feel like my Brandy has little cat-angels fanning their wings over her.
The address you're asking about is Georgetown Animal Clinic PC, c/o Dr. Scott Newman, 5155 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, NY 14221, 716-633-7123. These are the people I brag to everyone about because of the good work they've done in researching feline diabetes, and the good care given to our Fritzie and all four of our cats. Their site is www.georgetownanimalclinic.com.
Many sincere thanks, again, for all the support, pep-talking, purring, advice and help you all have given.
Blessed be, Baha

I know what you mean about the money. I've had to scrape the barrel these last weeks because of the vet's bills at the beginning of the month, but I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
