Well, yes, she has arthritis in her knees, so I will start putting
glucosimine on everyone's food. I guess there is another med she can take if
it gets worse. Her lip (rodent ulcer) and everything else is connected to
allergies. We have kitty benedryl now. Hopefully a good freeze will help.
Glad I took her in though because she had impacted anal glands! Very bad.
Poor baby. It took a lot to empty them and then they put that medicine in
there to flush them out. So that's how it turned out. 21.95 for the whole
visit plus a couple of cans of food! I could not believe that. I hope this
benedryl stuff helps. SHe has been VERY itchy. I hope a good freeze will
also help.

WOW!  I want *your* vet!!!

I'm so glad it wasn't anything serious.  Purrs coming for Sugar to feel
better quickly.

Poor baby.  Bet she feels a thousand times better now.  I wouldn't mind a
heavy frost myself.  Tired of allergy season.

Karen,

Glad to hear it sounds like things that can be dealt with.  I've got a
rodent ulcer kitty, too, Trill.  What's the kitty benedryl called?
might have to ask about that.

You go, Sugar!

it is chlorpheniramine. Very cheap. Take anywhere from 1/4 tab up to two
tabs per day. 50% chance of helping. So we will see. I was surprised to see
her lip had gone down quite a bit. The vet was thrilled about that; that it
had gone down with no medication. How often does Trill get that?

Thanks, Karen.  I will have to ask about that.

Trill has had it several times.  He has it now, but I just haven't
been able to afford to get it taken care of, since Sabra being sick,
Brando's dental work, vaccinations, and Arthur's neuter and x-ray were
higher on my list.  Trill is next, and I will have to ask about the
chlorpheniramine.  What they did with Trill before was give him a
couple of Depo-Medrol shots, which cleared it right up.  Does Sugar
get acne on the chin, too?  Trill had a problem with that as well.  He
still gets it once in awhile, but since I switched to all metal or
ceramic water and food dishes, it is pretty rare.  It's supposed to be
related to the allergy, IIRC, as well as the rodent ulcer.

She's never had acne that I noticed but being black it is harder. Her
ulcer was going down all on its own.It looks really good today. I think
the chloro stuff helped. I will give her some more tonight. It is
really cheap. It was 4$ for a bottle of several tablets and it is for
1/4 tab to 2 tablets daily, but starting with the small dose (which
seems to have helped some.)

Benadryl's generic name is diphenhydramine. Chlorpheniramine is a
different drug, although from a similar class.

Well, she just meant "allergy meds" since most people recognize Benedryl as
such.

If she's been puking more than usual and been a bit listless, this may
well fix the problem. Tiger had impacted anal glands a couple of weeks
back, and ended up at the ER vet with a 10 day course of antibiotics.

Apparently, anal gland problems aren't that common in cats......

Glad she's feeling better and things aren't too serious.

That's the wierd thing because she doesn't seem listless or anything. No
puking. That had to have been bothering her though. I don't know why they
say it is uncommon in cats because both Sugar and Grant had problems and so
does my mom's cat.  I feel bad I didn't know. I may just have to go in for
an anal check up every few months just to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Glad you caught the impaction & nothing was too serious.
Major win over TED's bill, too!

I have an arthritic spine & take supplements: I'd recommend
a Glucosamine/Chondriotin blend, in trials it was much more
effective than glocosamine alone IIRC (you might want to do
your own research).

Yes, we are using cosequin. I wonder if her knees will stop creaking?

Poor Sugar! You're a good meowmie taking care of all that bothers
her. So many (not us here though!) don't.  Allergies suck and I
hope the first freeze takes care of that. Purrs for her poor knees.

Aw, Karen, I'm so glad her lip wasn't more serious!  Please give her purrs
from us.  Sounds like you got a remarkable bargain at your vet as a regular
visit at my vet's starts at $40.   Don't know if this might be of interest
to you but I use Cosequin For Cats which I order from www.valleyvet.com;
they're supposed to be chicken-flavored and I empty a gelcap onto a little
plate plus a tablespoon of warm water and then put a small amount of dry
food in it to get the cats to eat it up.

Yeah, I get the chicken flavored too. I'll check out the site. Thanks!

Great news!  I'm sure Sugar would not agree as it sounds like a bad day
for her but everything seems fairly minor and controllable.

I'm glad she got all fixed up today and that you know what caused he lip to
swell.  Here's lots of purrs that her meds will kick in ASAP and that the
Glucosamine fixes up those creaky knees.

I want your vet!  It costs me a small fortune for a check-up with no
meds or food samples.  It's cheaper to take a child to a doctor than
to take a cat to our vet.

What's a rodent ulcer?

Purrs and headbutts for you and Sugar, Karen.  Hobbes sends special
headbutts to Sugar because he has recently experienced the humiliation
associated with having your anal glands flushed out and the pain as well.

It was BAD. SHe had chunky stuff in there that would never have come out. I
don't understand how she didn't SHOW me there was a problem. SHe used to
scoot her butt if it got bad. I had NO idea. :(
