I Am NOT a Shelter

But apparently someone in the neighborhood thinks I am.

DH went out to pick up a few things at the grocery store yesterday.
He was gone maybe 1/2 hour.  I was laying on the couch, screaming in
pain (I fell down on Tuesday, and twisted as I did, and I am having
tremendous pain in my ribs that feels like they are bruised).

DH got home, and was frustrated because the store had none of the
things we needed!  So he stopped at a yard sale instead, and picked up
a few little things for himself and for me.  And he got a cat book at
the grocery store (go figure).

And then he told me what was on the porch.

A medium-sized dog carrier, with two little kittens inside.

I am about ready to strangle someone!  You don't just *dump* kittens
on somebody else's porch!  What a complete, utter -- grrrrr, I can't
even think of a word or phrase bad enough for this woman.

A neighbor claims she saw a woman do it, and it isn't anyone she knows
from the neighborhood (and she knows *everybody*).  Unfortunately, the
neighbor is the same one I had to call the Humane Society on several
years ago, so her veracity is in doubt.

I can barely take care of my own cats, and some idiot thinks I can
take care of a couple of kittens.  Yeah, right.

They are covered with fleas, need deworming, and who knows what.  And
they seem to think my homemade litterbox (a cardboard box with a small
plastic trash bag around it and litter on top of that) is a nice bed
to sleep and play in, and the carrier is a great place to poop and
pee.  Great, they're not litter-box trained.

I will call Cat Welfare Monday and see if they will take them, but
sometimes they are completely full.  And if they can't take them, I
have no idea what to do.

They are absolutely adorable, of course.  One is orange and white, the
other mostly black with a white bib and some other white.  I'm calling
them "Locke" and "Sheppard" after the two main characters on the TV
show "Lost" (my current favorite).  Sheppard is shyer than Locke, and
more wriggly when you try to hold him (? -- I am terrible at sexing
cats! I'm just calling them "he" to make it simple for now).  They
look to be about three months old, maybe.  They appear to still have
their milk teeth, so they're definitely not older than that.  They are
drinking water out of a dish fine, and eating some Fancy Feces -- err
-- Feast, that I had left over from when Sabra was dying and I was
having trouble getting him to eat.  Right now, they are both curled up
asleep in the litterbox.  I have *got* to get them to figure out what
that's *for*!

So, because some jerk didn't spay/neuter, got kittens, and didn't have
the conscience to find homes for these kittens on their own, and
decided to cowardly dump them on me, I have to deal with it.  Some
people just make me want to spit.

I just hope the shelter will take them, since they are very young and
highly adoptable (once the litterbox problem is taken care of).  If
not, I have no idea what I am going to do.

Thanks so much, you #$$%^&*&*()()!#%&(.

I just hope I can get them in, and that they will get adopted by
wonderful folks like you guys, who will love and pamper them the rest
of their long, happy, healthy lives.

Oh Ginger-lyn.  It's all the good deeds you've done in the past.  They

The bright side of it is, the kittens are now in better care.

And you got a nice big carrier out of it, too boot ;)

That's a good, positive attitude to have!  I vote for this one!

Purrs, GL, that the kittens find a good forever home.

People suck. I hope the shelter takes them in GL. Thank you for
taking them in until you can find something that works out.

People suck. Hissspits be upon them.

But in the mean time, may the terrible two, with their cuteness, adorability
and hoolikitten antics take your mind off the pain and give you good reason
to smile again.

You deserve it.

And may they both find a most Excellent foreverhome.

Well, it's odd they were in a carrier. And they *could* have been
dumped in the street. I know it's hard. But there is a reason for
everything, right? Love the names!

Purrs that the kittens get adopted. It's a strange coincidence that I read
your post right after watching a recording of 'LOST'

Purrs for the kittens to find good forever homes. How did the dumper
even know to dump them on your porch?? I can't fathom the thinking of a
person who would do something like that.

Thanks, Marina, and everyone for your kind words and purrs.

The only thing we can figure out in terms of how the dumper decided on
my porch is my reputation as the neighborhood "Crazy Cat Lady", or
someone who knows the people who gave me the two kittens last year
(remember that fiasco?  But at least I got my beautiful Arthur out of
that.).  At least that guy last year *asked*.

Cat Welfare, nor any other shelters around here, will take them :-(
It's kitten season, and all the shelters are full.  I am about in
tears.  There is one rescue group that doesn't have a shelter, but has
fostering folks who take them to pet stores on the weekends.  I left a
message for them, and hopefully they can help.  I've also sent out an
e-mail to everyone in my address book on this computer (a pitiful 9),
and asked them to help, or ask their friends, and see if we can find a
home.

They are getting frustrated being stuck in the carrier, even though it
is a good size one.  I am taking them out for a few minutes here and
there, to pet them or put them on my lap.  This room is a mess, and if
I let them roam, I'd never find them!

They still haven't figured out litterboxes, even though I washed their
blankie, and DH washed the carrier yesterday.  I found some poopies
today, and put them them in the box; I sure hope that does the trick.

An idea: If you can foster them for a short while, there may be a
way to have their vetting taken care of. All rescue groups know of,
and take advantage of, the various grants available for these
groups. If you contact one of the no-kill shelters and offer to
foster them, let their pictures be taken for petfinder or the
rescue groups own website adoption pages, ask them if you can take
them to their vet for care. You could even take them to an area
adoption show at Petco or PetSmart if they do adoptions there. It's
sort of boring, but meeting people, and especially the kids that
fall in love with the kitten in the cage is priceless.

Cheryl, thanks for the ideas.  I did contact one rescue group that
fosters, but haven't heard back from them yet.  My scanner doesn't
work, I don't have a digital camera, so I can't get photos.  I don't
have a car, so I can't get to the pet stores.  And even fostering, for
kittens that haven't been vetted yet, isn't realistic, since I have no
room at the moment, which is why I haven't been rescuing lately.  The
kittens are stuck in a carrier (it's large, but still), and they are
getting *very* restless.  I *really* need to get them into a shelter
or a home, and soon.  :-(  If they could be tested, vaccinated,
deflead, dewormed and all that, I *might* be able to kitten proof the
room they're in so they could get out of the carrier.  But as I said,
I haven't heard from the rescue group, who has offered me help in the
past, so I am hopeful I will hear from them today.

Some people are just stupid.  The positive side is that the kittens have a
chance with you as opposed to being just dumped *anywhere*. Past good deeds
don't go unpunished :) here's hoping it all works out well.

The ignorance of some folk is just beyond comprehension.

Our friend Marilyn, who fostered our Brandy, was recently dumped upon
thusly, and is now the nurse and guardian of 17, count 'em, 17 cats. A
neighbor who told her their cat had been fixed surprised us all as a star
rose in the east, and had a nice healthy litter of six, dumped on Marilyn
with a "gee, can you do us a favor, I have NO IDEA how it happened, etc."
Three months or so later, the same woman pulled the washbasket routine, and
a few weeks later the same woman again, having another "fixed" cat,
experienced the miracle of parthenogenesis, came again to Marilyn to
announce that rising star and the birth of several kittens, and could
Marilyn please take them etc. The goodhearted Marilyn, already put upon
with her duties with the Tenth Chance shelter, agreed on condition that she
take the mamas too. And lo and behold, a MIRACLE, ayyyyyy-men, those cats
had all their parts inside and intact, a condition which Marilyn had fixed,
so to speak, in half of no time. Where does this leave my friend? Having
had to take a second job at a mortuary of all places (God bless her, she
has enough stress without taking on the anguish of those who have lost
loved ones) because she would rather go that extra mile on that extra limb
than let those babies come to harm.

The good news is that the shelter, who shows at our local PetSmart, has had
quite a run of kitten adoptions in recent weeks. A lot of the grown ones
too, thankfully. But why, WHY do people NOT listen to Bob Barker, and have
their pets fixed?!

Blessed be,
Baha

Because they are too cheap and/or lazy and think that some rescue
group/shelter should/will take care of the problem with all that money they
have that just fell from the sky. It's too much trouble to apply for low
cost spay/neuter vouchers and find a vet who honors them and after all 'it's
just a cat'.
