Chuck, what a wonderful cat. I loved reading about him. I know you will miss
him terribly, but how lucky you were to have him for so long.

My goodness what a wonderful, smart and amazing cat. He lived a long
life and you were so lucky to have him so long. I wish every cat were
as loved and has as great a friend as  you were to Chumley.

I'm so very sorry for your loss.  Chumley was indeed a great cat and you
went the extra mile to provide him his own apartment!  There are not many
people in this world who would consider such a thing; bless you.

I have the feeling Chumley was the first cat to ever own you so completely,
and I know how bad it hurts. Your tribute to Chumley had me sobbing before I
got halfway through. Your writing reminds me somewhat of reading one of my
favorite authors, John McPhee.

It sounds like you and Chumley had some wonderful times together.
He'll still be around you, I'm sure, since you had such a close bond.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Chuck.  Chumley sounds like a great character to
have known and loved.  Purrs coming to help heal your broken heart and a
candle will be lit tonight to help guide Chumley on his way to the Rainbow
Bridge.

Hugs,

Gee, thanks everyone, I sure do appreciate the kind words...for
Chumley, and myself.

I'm still pretty weak behind it, everytime I stop and think about him,
I get to bawlin'. Our other 3 cats,
who have never had a kind gesture towards him, now seem to be trying to
console me. I guess they hate
seeing a grown man cry like a baby.  I try not to do that too often,
but as many of you know, in times
like these, the harder you try not to--the more waterworks spring
forth.  I hope it's good for "the process,"
if not, I am in big trouble.  I call it "the process," because that
word "closure, " it just sounds too final
for me to even contemplate, much less use with any real conviction.

One other thing that happened recently with Chums. All of a sudden,
about a month and a half ago, he
started climbing up on the table where my PC is, and parking his
caboose right in front of the monitor.
I guess he was trying to tell me to pay attention to him, while I still
had the chance. He gave me no choice, thank goodness...he always did
know better than me what he wanted. Man oh man, what a cat.

I've always maintained cat people are good people. You folks have just
proven it to me, with your kindness, Thank you again.

It *is* a process. It took me about 3 months to not tear up when
thinking of Grant, and I don't believe I had the kind of deep deep bond
you have, so it will be a while. I loved my little buddy and still miss
him terribly. I can't say it gets better, but it gets.....different.

It takes a true man to cry in grief, friend and brother, and don't try to
hold back. Go to the can, if it hits you at work; and in your own space,
let it go. It is part of the process. I don't like "closure" either; almost
two years ago, we had to put down our beloved Fritzie, my best friend of 19
years, and still I cry every now and then even though we now have four
catbabies. It never "closes." Chumley had his unique personality, just as
my Fritzie did, just as all cats, all persons; and everyone on this board
knows that our cats are all unique persons. It never closes. But I do
promise it gets easier, and at some point you'll remember your sweet buddy
with smiles.

Blessed be,
Baha

I'm sorry to hear you've lost your best mate. Its an incredible story, and
you truly are a great cat person for continuing to rent an apartment just fo
the sake of Chumley. Of course, though, how could you say "no" to such a
handsome boy?

Have you heard of Rainbow Bridge? Perhaps it might provide you some solace:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet
goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run
and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor;
those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we
remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each
miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops
and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body
quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green
grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet,
you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy
kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and
you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from
your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Chumley must have been a really extraordinary cat.  It sounds like he
had a lot of intelligence and character; his picture gives me the
impression of a cat with tons of personality.  It's wonderful that you
were able to enjoy his friendship for so many years and from what
you've written it sounds like he enjoyed good health until the very
end; that's a bonus. You gave him everything a cat could want and more.
I'm really sorry for your loss.

the story of how you got him to come in is so amazing! How smart he

Many condolences, and a few good, rumbling purrs for your dear Chumley's
peaceful crossing and the gentle healing of a broken heart. No doubt
Chumley's giving some love and comfort to one who was taken by Katrina,
and awaits the ahppy reunion you'll someday have.

Blessed be,
Baha
