I'm going to try to get in tomorrow (though we have an appointment for
Monday because she has been creaking as she walks). But tonight I
noticed her bottom lip is swollen. I'm really scared about it. I so
hope it is not serious. I just can't have another baby lost :(

{{{Karen}}} I understand why you're worried. Many purrs that it is
nothing serious. Last yar, Frank had a swollen lip that turned out to be
an abscessed tooth. When the pus had been drained, he was fine again.
Purrs that Sugar can be fixed just as easily.

I guess we will have to wait until Monday. No openings today and tomorrow
they don't do xrays, which means I'd have to bring her back again on Monday,
and since she is still eating and acting fine (still perky. Found a hair
doodad on the floor this a.m. and we "played" making bed), I guess it isn't
an emergency. She very well could have been bit by a bug. They keep getting
in (that time of year where they want IN) and I did see her eat one the
other night. I just hope it's that.

It could be that EGC stuff that Oscar gets. When I see her lip start
to get pink or swollen, I bring her in for a steroid shot and she's
fine in a few days. She never even seems to notice it, other than
hating the car trip.
I hope it's just a bug bite, but even if it's EGC, I want to assure
you that it's not a big deal.

I thought of that too. Do they say what causes that??

It's thought to be something similar to an allergic reaction, but the
cat doesn't have to have known allergies to be affected.
Really, very little is known, except that it responds quite well to
steroid shots. The recommended treatment is one shot right away, then
another in two weeks. We've been able to get away with only one shot
if I catch it early enough.

Purrs. If she has trouble again later, I'd try to get her in to a vet.

Try not to panic, Karen (I know why you are worried..) but she may just have
bumped her mouth on something, like misjudging a jump or how wide the door
was ajar, something as simple as that. Or maybe an insect stung her
perhaps.
It is easy to think the worst when your pets mean so much to you - I've been
guilty of this myself many times. Instead of the renal failure/liver
cancer/brain tumour/all sorts of terminal stuff etc I was lying awake
thinking about while I waited a day for the vet apptmt it often turned out
to be something easily treatable.
I try not to do this any more. I *try*. Because most of the time my
animals turned out okay and I suffered by thinking the worst before they
could be seen at TED's.
I have decided for my own peace of mind that I will try my best to think
it's a minor illness until TED tells me otherwise and that's when I'll start
to worry.
Hearing Betty's story has frightened you plus losing Grant, hasn't it?
Betty had very different symptoms to Pearl. Try and rest easy until you see
the vet.

I agree - I hope I haven't been causing others to worry unnecessarily.
Usually, these things turn out to be horses, and no zebras; it's
probably a minor thing. Purrs for little Suggie. Miah!

Thanks Tak. It is not YOU that has caused the worry. It's just been
that kind of year. To be honest, I just feel like I can't keep a cat
healthy for anything this year :(

I'm sure her lip is going to be something simple. Maybe she bumped it
on something. I know telling you not to worry isn't going to help
though, mostly because it never helps me when someone tells me the
same thing. We'll just send you some calming vibes from here along
with purrs for Sugar. Too bad there isn't such a thing as catnip for
humans. I'd send you some grade A human-nip if I had it. You already
know I grow great catnip.
