Oh man did we need *THIS* bit of good news.  One of my daughter's dogs,
Gypsy, was found and is safe; and we're hoping the other was with her (she
was chipped, but Digger was still a puppy and had not been chipped yet).

Here's is the link with her rescue picture (my daughter is Erin).  I didn't
even wait for my daughter to complete the call to the rescuers before
rushing downstairs to my office to tell you all (the phone lines are getting
herd to use because of Rita).

Great news!  I was just thinking about you and wondering if either of the
daughter's dogs had been found.
I hope the puppy turns up as well.  Did he have a collar with some I.D. on
it?
Both our cats wear collars with tags, but I have put microchipping way up at
the top of my list.  My only hesitation was deciding which brand would be
the most likely to be read by the most common scanners.  Do you know what
brand of microchip Gypsy has?
I can hardly wait to hear about how they will be reunited.  I've been
wondering all along if your daughter's dogs would turn up in Houston because
so many of the pets rescued in New Orleans have been taken there.  Where do
they have Gypsy?

Yes, he had a collar and tags.  And, actually, that's how they found out who
Gypsy belonged to, not the microchip.

In New Iberia Parish (it's about 100 miles north of New Orleans).  My SIL
will go and get her either tomorrow or Saturday and bring her to where he is
staying with his aunt.

I'll say!  That's terrific!

Now let's keep it going ....

Digger is safe along with Gypsy.  Prrrrrrrrr....

Rita turns far enough north so that Houston is on the backside
of the circulation.  Prrrrrrrrrrrr....

Rita comes ashore as a minimal category 4 or even category 3.
Prrrrrrrrr....

All the Crewes and relatives in Houston ride out the storm in
safety.  Prrrrrrrrrrr....

What Wayne said.
Dogs are very good swimmers and there is still hope for Digger.  It's just a
case of finding out where he might have been rescued to (I hope..)
It would be wonderful if he was found - then you would all be known as safe.

I"d love to heard the story how they came about finding him. I am
always looking for amazing stories about pets being re-united all
because they were microchipped. It's one of my "causes" I guess, I try
to put them in the newsletter. People like to read that kind of story,
and maybe it will convince someone to microchi;p their cats and dogs.

Catnipped said that it was the I.D. tag that identified the dog, not the
microchip.  The I.D. had information on the owner.
This is not to say that the microchip isn't important.  Although both our
cats wear collars with I.D. tags, I've been thinking a long time about
getting them microchipped, too.  My only hesitation is deciding which brand
to get.
As for I.D. tags, one of my pet peeves is people who will put a collar on a
pet, but no I.D. on the collar.  I really appreciate it when a stray dog
wanders by and it has an I.D. tag with the pet's name and the owner's
contact information.
When the I.D. tag is missing, especially in a situation like Katrina, the
microchip would be essential.  I mean, how many black cats with yellow eyes
are there? If we got separated from our kitties, how would I be able to tell
if the found photo is of Cinder?  Or the gray tabby is Rosie?

Persia has a collar and a tag.  The tag identifies her as belonging to me
and gives my phone number.  It also indicates she is microchipped so they'll
know to scan her for my info if they weren't going to do it already.  When I
got her chipped I didn't know there was more than one kind, but the vet said
what she has is the one most commonly read by the scanners in the U.S.  I
firmly believe in both a collar with tag and microchipping.  Just remember
if you move to update the info on both.

What brand of microchip did you get and how long ago?

I agree that the best is both a collar with tag and microchipping.

You just never know what could happen.

I had her chipped back in 2001.  I don't know the brand but the service is
the Home Again Companion Animal Retrieval System.  I just called them and
they said it's readable by nearly all shelter and vet offices.

She'd only been with me a month when she managed to slip out the door as I
was retrieving a package on the stoop.  Then a neighbor let out two dogs
(not on leashes - totally against the law) and they scared her so she ran
off.  I was wandering around calling for her for two days.  I could barely
function at work.  After 48 hours I gave up on her; figured she was lost or
dead.  I sat on the patio swing and cried.  I called for her one more time,
then went inside.  Suddenly I heard this plaintive MEOW?! at my back door.
Persia!  OMG!  She found her way back to me!  I made an appointment the next
day to have her chipped.  Nowadays she doesn't try to get out; I think she
had her fill of the big OUT.  She had mud in her coat and leaves stuck to
her; she'd obviously spent a couple of nights under a bush somewhere.

I bought her a kitty-walk enclosure so she can be outside but within my
supervision.

Jill
W. Leong - 23 Sep 2005 20:41 GMT
Rusty already had a chip when I adopted him more than 10 years ago
from Humane. All the cats and dogs from the local Humane were chipped before
they are put up for adoption.

I think I remember something about that.  Weren't there two or three missing

Here's Persia in her KittyWalk.  It's basically a long tube with mesh
covering it and I added a little covered "kabana" at the end.

http://community.webshots.com/photo/92115860/135114987hYyQpe

I ordered it from www.drsfostersmith.com  They don't ship outside of the
U.S. but there are others who sell the system who may.  They can be
purchased to stake into the ground, or, like mine, sit flat on the patio or
deck.  They can be connected to a cat-flap.  There are climbing towers
available and larger "rooms" IIRC to attach and more than one unit can be
hooked to another for more length.  She loves it.

Here's a picture of one with an upstairs (different merchant):

I know, isn't it cool?!  Persia doesn't have anything that elaborate; just
the main Kittywalk tube and I later added the kabana on the far end of it.
She loves being able to sit outside and will ask at the back door for me to
please put her in it :)
