Hi All,
Last Thursday, I took Panther to the vet to get his blood checked to
make sure he's getting the right amount of medication. This morning, I
talked to Pan's vet who told me Pan's thyroid was the highest it's ever
been. (He has a thyroid tumor that we're controlling through
medication.) The vet believes Pan must be spitting out his pills
somehow, as his thyroid levels SHOULD NOT be as high as they are with
the medication he's on. But the thing is... I HAVE been faithfully
giving Pan his pills every night before bed, and as far as I can tell,
he's been swallowing them. This is not a cat who takes his medication
peacefully, and he and I have had our medication battles in the past.
But I haven't found any little dried out, spat-up pills around the
apartment, either. I've had a lot of practice pilling him, and I can
tell when he does and when he doesn't swallow his meds.
I'm quite worried about my dear old boy. He's become very thin, and
he's not able or not interested in grooming his coat the way he used
to. He does still have an appetite, but a few mouthfuls of food at
each meal seem to be all that he wants. I'm wondering if it would make
any earthly difference to give him his pills in the morning, instead?
I'm wondering if maybe his tumor has become more aggressive, somehow.

Purrs. Is radioisotope therapy an option? It's normally a low-risk way
to treat hyperthyroidism.

Many purrs on the way for Pan. This exactly what I go through with
Frank. Frank gets his medication twice a day, though.

Ironically, the last time we had it checked in the spring, the thyroid
level was too low, and the vet had me cut it back to one pill a day.
Maybe he'll have to go back to two doses a day, and things will level
out, again. I hope so.
Howard, radiation is an option, I'm just not sure I can afford it for a
sustained period of time, which was my original reason for dosing Pan
with pills. It may sound selfish of me, but I have other financial
obligations that I need to be able to meet. I'm also worried about the
stress for an elderly cat. But I don't want Pan to be in pain, either.
He seems more frail to me than he used to be, and he sleeps more.

Melissa, I'm so sorry to hear this. I would ask your vet *lots* of
questions. In the meanwhile, I am purring for your boy to get better
soon!

I'm sorry to hear this. I'd definitely try the pills in the morning
to see if it helps.

Purrs for Pan to be OK. Is it possible to feed him small meals several
times a day? I find that the older my cats get, the more that seems to
suit them.

At least in humans, changing the time of giving hormones (especially),
but also other drugs, may very well be affected by day-night cycles.
Even with the sleep cycle of a cat, this still may be effective.
