She has been checking almost every hour of every day on PetFinder and other
sites for lost pets. Her husband has gone back to the outskirts of New
Orleans and is temporarily staying with an aunt there. It will be his turn
to go back into the parish to look at what's left of their house at the end
of next week, but he's trying to get in sooner. He's physically going to
every shelter he is allowed to go to in order to look for them.
The whole thing is mind-boggling. If it were just one family group, the
whole family could come together to help get that family unit back on its
feet. But every single member of my family, each family group of brothers'
families, nieces' families, nephews' families, aunts' families, uncles'
families, my mother - everyone except me - lived in St. Bernard and lost
everything they owned. The family is reeling and we don't quite know where
to begin to get lives put back together again.
Reports say that as many as 80% of the houses in St. Bernard will have to be
bulldozed to the ground. My brother, David (the one who I thought for a
while might have been lost to us), was allowed back into the parish to try
to get his machine shop going again in order to help parish workers rebuild
the parish infrastructure. He has confirmed that his house and my oldest
brother's house had buckled and will have to be razed.
My daughter and her family will be staying here at least until the end of
this school year. They won't be allowed to even begin rebuilding (if that's
what they decide to do) until next summer. Her family is in the worst shape
because they didn't have any insurance at all (not even home owner's because
the house was not in their names). They'll be starting over from scratch
with three girls, 6, 11, and 13. I'm trying to convince them to just leave
the soggy heap and move here where we can provide some help, but I don't
know what they will decide.
Hugs,

Lots and lots of purrs.

Thanks. I'm pleased to hear that they are making efforts to find their
pets. They are part of the family, and it is very important to make every
effort. Please ask them to search the house physically as soon as they are
permitted in because it's always possible that the animals are still inside.

The situation is truly horrendous. As I said earlier, I can't even begin to
comprehend the magnitude of something like this. It is tragedy compounded
by still more tragedy when I try to view the situation as a whole. I have
seen pictures of St. Bernard, and it is truly unbelievable. My heart aches
for all the people involved and for all the animals that have unable to
escape.

That's why my SIL is trying to get permission to get into the parish before
his official date. They are still finding pets alive, and they had a 100-lb
bag of dog food in the utility room that I'm sure the dogs could have torn
open. They haven't given up hope yet.

I'm so sorry the financial news is so bad, even though it's wonderful
that none of your family members were killed by the hurricane or the
flooding. I hope the dogs will be found alive at least, and that there
is the potential for a joyous reunion.
It's quite an amazing and sobering realization to know we've
essentially lost a city in this disaster. Somehow, I know we can pull
together, but poor old New Orleans will never be the same. And many
lives will never be the same again, either.

Sending lots of purrs. I wish there was something more I could do.
