It's the Brit terminology. We refer to it as tin-foil.

I believe that it used to be made from tin, back before engineers
found an economical way to refine bauxite into aluminum.  At one time,
aluminum was worth more per pound than was gold.

Before WWI foil was made from tin.  It's tinfoil for the same reason
refrigerators are iceboxes.  Because they were, once.
