Chester and his teeth

Hi all:

I finally bit the bullet and made the appointment for Chester's pre-dental
blood tests this coming Friday.  The cat looks like he smokes two packs a
day since he's never chewed a thing in his life.  He swallows his huge dry
kibble whole and barely works up the chunky wet food before he downs it.
Quite amazing.  TED gave me a sample of some tartar reducing huge chunks for
Chester to chew once - Chester actually got them down whole too.  Ugh.

Of course, I am a basket case.  He's 9 years old and despite being no
problem whatsoever in all other respects, he's had bad reactions to his
yearly shots.  I'm terrified that he will have a reaction to anesthetic ...
and at the same time understand that with teeth as grimey as his, he runs
all kinds of other health risks.

If blood tests look okay at the end of this week, we'll probably schedule
the dental for the last week of September.  I'll keep you posted and may ask
for some of the legendary rpca purrs when we finally take him in.

Thanks Karen.  TED doesn't seem to think Chester has discomfort and we would
have done it sooner if TED really recommended it.  Chester has really never
chewed his food so I don't think his eating style is as a result of sore
gums or teeth.  I don't look forward for the general anesthetic for him at
all though.  That's one of the reasons I want to do it now actually - do it
before he gets any older and it gets any more risky.

I remember picking him up at the SPCA after they'd snipped him.  They told
me that it would done first thing in the AM; however, he had just come out
of surgery when I picked him up later that afternoon.  The poor boy was
woozier than anything and just sat in his crate purring away to calm
himself.  Right after I got him home, he got respiratory infection and I had
to take him to the emergency vet on the long weekend.  Poor boy was
congested and sneezing and it was pretty scary.  While he soon got better, I
sure wondered if we were going to lose him and this kind of brings it all
back.

Lots of purrs and best wishes for the pre-dental tests to be ok and for
Chester's teeth to be fixed without a problem,

Do they sell Science Diet Oral Care up in Canada? The kibble are the
size of d*g kibble and they are designed to clean tartar. Wouldn't do
much use if swallowed whole though... :)

Make sure they use isofluorane, it's the safe anesthetic.

Thanks Victor - we talked about that with TED and he gave us some sample
bags to take home.  Chester didn't chew them either.  What a crazy cat.  He
can't drink very well either.  He has a long floppy tongue and he sits at
the bowl for a very long time splashing water everywhere over a two foot
radius.  He gets drops of water all over his face too.  Funny guy.

Thanks for this - I've written it down and will make sure to ask about this.

Purrs from my clowder, especially BTDT purrs from Frank. He's had
trouble with his teeth all his life. Could you ask your vet if they have
a toothpaste for cats? One vet told me that even if you can't brush
their teeth, but they lick up the toothpaste, the enzymes in it will
have a cleansing effect on the teeth.
