Desk Drawer Stowaway

Captain's mad at me.

It seems that the back of our computer desk really doesn't HAVE a back, at
least not behind the part where the drawers are.

I might have gone forever without knowing this, had it not been for Captain
going into Inspector Gadget mode, and having to get his little pinkie nosie
into everything.

Here I sat, at the computer, surfing away. And typing. And suddenly,
hearing the crumple, crumple, crumple noise of paper being squashed.

Now, it wasn't ME crumpling paper. It wasn't DH crumpling paper. So my
immediate thought was that one of the Resident Felines was crumpling paper.
"HEY. Stop that!", I called out, and went back to surfing.

Moments later... crumple, crumple, crumple. "I said KNOCK IT OFF", I called
out, looking around and wondering just where the sound was coming from.
There was no sign of anything amiss. I resumed surfing.

Crumple, crumple, crumple. This time, I was pretty sure that I'd IDed the
direction from which the noise was emanating. It seemed to be coming from
our bottom desk drawer, which is pretty large and also happens to be where
we keep our store of computer paper.

I pulled open the drawer. Up popped Captain like an orange-and-white fuzzy
Jack in the Box. He had that classic feline, "What just happened here?"
bemused expression on his face, looking around to determine how his
hidey-hole had suddenly opened wide into broad daylight. The crumpling
noise had been caused by a certain feline, who'd gotten into the desk
drawer by way of the open BACK of the desk, stomping around on the computer
paper and its paper wrapping, to fashion it into a cozy nest.

I couldn't help it. I burst out laughing. Captain sulked his way out of the
computer room and curled up in the hallway, just outside the computer room
door.

So now Captain's mad at me.

Or, at least, he WAS mad. During the time that it took for me to write this
anecdote, he decided to come BACK into the computer room and curl up on my
Box of Stuff that's next to the computer desk. Nothing like being within
arm's length of Meowmy, who doles out pettins while she's surfing, right?

Short attention spans can be a Good Thing, sometimes. :o)

A friend of mine who was not a cat lover (or claimed not to be anyway)
was left at home with the cats while his wife (he claims this incident
was the start of their divorce) went out. When she came back, she
couldn't find Raistlin anywhere. She was getting pretty worried but was
assured he could not have got out as he'd been asleep in the house when
she went out and the door was next opened when she came in. To take her
mind off of things, she decided to start dinner..

When she opened the knife drawer, Raistlin popped out of it. He had
managed to wriggle into the gap behind the unit and then scrambled into
the drawer.

But she was never convinced her soon to be ex-husband hadn't put him
there on purpose

I can't say anything about the ex-husband, but my cats, especially Mandy,
regularly wriggle into a desk file drawer from behind and underneath. The
drawer is in a heavy old wooden desk, and I wouldn't have thought there
was enough space between the back of the drawer and the back of the desk,
but, but I've sat at the desk and heard them do it, even as adult cats.

When the cat in question gets bored with squishing my computer booklets
and trying to make a bed on extra envelopes (with her claws), she gets out
the same way she got in.

I can't vouch for what happened in Raistlin's case, but I can definitely
vouch for the fact that kitties can get into drawers from the opposite
side, after Captain's little adventure. I never saw that happen before.

Now I know where to try looking for him if he seems to have vanished into
thin air, lol. Wise-aleck cat! :o)

Ivy (RB) used to, if a dresser drawer were left open the teeniest bit (just
enough to hook a paw), pull the drawer open more, climb into said drawer,
and then *behind* the drawer!  I came home from work one day, found a bunch
of my undies on the floor & the drawer open - and though I may be a bit of a
slob, I didn't remember doing *that* - so I proceeded to clean up a bit and
went to close the drawer.  Wouldn't close.  Tried again.  Still wouldn't.
checked to make sure that it wasn't over stuffed.  Still would only close
about 3/4 of the way.  Pulled everything *out* of the drawer.  No go.  Took
the drawer out of the dresser (with an extremely puzzled look on my face),
and out popped Ivy - somewhat disgruntled at a) being woken from her nap, b)
having her hiding place discovered, and c) getting squished by Mommy (who
can be a big dumdum).

Your guys are a riot.  ;)  Such stripey monkeys. ;)  Stinky is never
one to hold a grudge, either.

LOL, thanks! I definitely think that Captain and Stanley are more
entertaining than the vast, VAST majority of what's on TV.

That might be a good idea for a TV channel. "All hoolikittens, all the
time." THAT would be the first reality TV show I'd actually want to watch!
;o)

LOL! I bet he was surprised to be found out... I accidentally shut
Scout into our filing cabinet once - I was sorting the files out and
both cats insisted on investigating the empty open drawer... and
unbenownst to me they jumped right down into the empty space BEHIND
the drawer. Silver jumped out and I shut the drawer, and then I
wondered why she was pawing at the closed cupboard so intently. I
opened it and out jumped Scouty with her dignity ruffled :)

My husband did something similar with our cabinet under the kitchen sink.
The doors are easy for a cat to pull open (as we discovered with
Harmony(RB) some time ago).

One night, DH was using his computer on the dining room table, when he
noticed Stanley standing in front of the open cabinet door under the
kitchen sink. He shooed the cat away and shut the door. But Stanley kept
sniffing at the doors. DH thought it was because he wanted to go back in.

Suddenly, BOOM! Captain came charging out from under the sink, knocking the
cabinet door wide open and leaving a trail of upended bottles of glass
cleaner, dish soap, etc in his wake. Stanley wasn't sniffing the door
because he wanted to go back in the cabinet. He was there because his
BROTHER was in the cabinet and he wanted to continue whatever game they
were playing before DH shut the door.

This is DH's first experience with hoolikittens. He didn't grow up with
pets, nor did he really have cats until he married me and inherited
9-year-old Melody and Harmony (both RB now). I think the concept of young,
active cats is a bit of an eye-opener for him. ;o)
