Overwhelmed but overjoyed!

CatNipped - 15 Sep 2004 17:38 GMT I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. My mother-in-law, her 3 dogs and 1 cat - my daughter, her husband, their 3 girls and their 2 dogs - all came to my house here in Houston from New Orleans to escape Ivan. Add in myself, my husband, and our 4 cats and we have a FULL HOUSE!
And my DH was silly enough to ask me, when we were buying this house, why we needed 5 bedrooms for just the two of us (plus fur-babies, of course). Well, he certainly has an answer to that question now. My mom went to central Louisiana along with my brother, his wife and his mother-in-law - they were smart enough to book a room early and then leave early (the people who came here took 18 hours to make a normally 6 hour drive).
They said all roads leading out of New Orleans were packed - the east-bound lanes were reversed for the evacuation so that everybody was heading west across 10 lanes of highway - and traffic was still down to a crawl.
Well, everyone is here now, safe and sound asleep (MIL got in at 3:00AM and daughter got in at 8:00AM, and I've overjoyed that they all made it safely. Now I'm still worried about my other brother, all my nieces and nephews, my aunts, uncles, cousins - all who are either still in New Orleans or stuck in traffic somewhere, so purrs would be really appreciated.
Hugs,
CatNipped

CatNipped - 15 Sep 2004 18:18 GMT > Lots of purrs for all those affected. The news said NOLA could be under > 12 feet of water!!! [quoted text clipped - 4 lines] > Send your spam here: uce@ftc.gov > Email me here: pistorLITTER@BOXaustin.rr.com Parts of New Orleans are 10+ feet below sea level - NONE of it is above sea level, the average "height" of N.O. is 6 feet below sea level. The levees are about 40 feet high, but the storm surge is 20 feet and the waves at the center of Ivan are 50 feet high (so 90 feet of water total!!!). If the storm surge goes up the mouth of the Mississippi, the levees will not hold it, will break, and N.O. will be washed away. Mega purrs going out to all the people there who decided to stay or were unable to get out because of the traffic - and mega purrs going out to all the people who may also be confronted with "Ivan the Terrible" no matter where they are.

Anything deeper than over your head really doesn't count anyway, or so a friend used to tell me when we went deep sea fishing and I'd ask how deep the water was.

Sure thing, purrs are coming for all. N.O. is particularly vulnerable. Last I heard, Ivan may be headed for Mobile, Alabama, and much of southern AL. Many evacuees apparently are coming up here to northern Alabama. Though we're near the Tennessee border, we are expecting quite a bit of nasty weather since Ivan is so large - already schools and such are closing down through the weekend!! We're quite worried about everyone in southern AL and LA. (Jeanne Hedge and I share a possible "namesake" hurricane coming up - let's hope she stays a dainty little tropical storm!!)

But it's still a Tropical Storm, and I haven't heard anyone say it's got a chance to become more than a minimal (category 1) hurricane.
Are you able to "disown" T.S. Jeanne if needed? I guess its name is pronounced "Jean", but I pronounce my name "Jean-knee" (as in the TV show "I Dream of Jeannie").
Yes, I've had people misspelling my name my entire life <g> (Jeannie, Jeane, Genie, Jenny, Jennie, Genny, Fred, Jeanie, Geanie...)

And I reckon a lot of Jeannes pronounce it "Jean-knee" though I personally figure that if it ain't got an "i" in it, it's probably "Jeen" (which is how I've pronounced *your* name - sorry about that!!). Actually, my dad was French and my name is pronounced the French "Zhawn" - but who'd ever figure that?

Not to be pessimistic, but it seems as though the Mexicans have an even chance of getting it instead, so purrs for them too.

According to the map I just saw on The Weather Channel, it's sitting right off Mobile (Alabama) Bay.
At this point, my decidedly non-expert opinion is that it's going to go ashore somewhere between New Orleans and Panama City (Florida).

According to the map I [quoted text clipped - 3 lines] >At this point, my decidedly non-expert opinion is that it's going to >go ashore somewhere between New Orleans and Panama City (Florida). It would surprise me if Ivan made such a radical turn at this late date and hit Mexico. There are so many small factors that can effect the course, though, that even with state of the art hardware the computer models can only give guess-timates about where these storms will make landfall. The thing to think about if where the storm would do the most damage when it does make landfall, and some areas are at more risk than others. When you consider possible damage, even a glancing blow to New Orleans could cause big time damage, since the storm surge alone would cause flooding without the wind.
Oh well, all I can do is prayer for those in the path and send purrs (high and dry in SW Oklahoma, and wouldn't mind a little of all the rain pelting the gulf and east coasts)

I don't consider anything unlikely when it comes to the path of those storms. Do you remember Hurricane Diana (1984)? It was moving predictably up the east coast (basically following the coastline but with the eye remaining just offshore), then stalled out, did a complete loop, and came back to visit areas it had passed previously

Which one, Huntsville or Crestwood? Yes, indeed, we expect a nasty day weatherwise tomorrow, though naturally not nearly so bad as the Gulf Coast. But I did my grocery shopping today to get us through the weekend, though a lot of shelves were already empty; schools, sporting events, meetings, some stores, have closed/cancelled/postponed activities many hours ago. I tremble to think how much worse it is for everybody to the south.
