Not-so-mighty huntresses!

The weather in our part of southern California has been moderating a bit
latley. It seems like our string of 100+ degree days might be gone for a
while. This means that it's much more comfortable when we get home, so
Nancy and I usually leave the back door standing open rather than just
opening the kitty flap.

Last night I got stuck working late. I was 30 minutes or so from home when
Nancy called my cell phone. She wanted me to be prepared to go
gopher-hunting when I got home. It seems one of our mighty huntresses
caught a gopher, brought it in to the house, then let it go. She didn't
see who was responsible for bringing it in, but her leading suspects are
Amelia and Tabitha. I reminded her that Harri has caught a few mice
before, but she assures me that this gopher was at least as big as Harri
(maybe a slight exaggeration there).

Once I got home I pulled each of the pieces of the sectional out from the
wall, with Miss Amelia providing her very valuable assistance. After
spending 30 minutes looking under everything that could be looked under I
concluded that Mr. Gopher had either been taken back outside by his
original captor, or had found his own way back outside.

At least, is sure hope that's the case!

I had no idea it got that hot in California!

Well, if you start getting a really nasty smell, you'll know it ain't
so! ;-)

Yes, that's what we're afraid of.

Yup! But it is a dry heat, so it's a bit easier than heat + humidity.

Hope Mr. Critter escaped his dread fate, Dan. =o) But cats are so
generous about making sure we poor helpless humans get enough to eat.

Ugh! This reminds me of the (big!) water vole Miranda had brought inside
on the island last summer, and I hadn't realised it was there. Then
there was this smell... I looked under the spare bed, and there it was.
<retch> I wish she'd learn to eat her catch, like Nikki did most times.
Of course, she'd always leave part of the innards, or even part of the
vole itself, for me to step on.

Reminds me of the mystery chicken! Dave had got some Southern Fried
Chicken from a local shop and he didn't like it very much so it went
into the bin. I said I would have to remember to seal the bag and take
it out before bed time but I forgot....

The next morning, the box was sitting in the middle of the floor
completely empty (obviously Dave didn't find it "finger lickin' good"
but it must have been paw lickin' good- they even ate the chips!) and
there were two furballs burping happily (Why do they do this? They are
fed enough honest! As I had to say to a friend who came round to find
them trying to get into the rubbish and wondered aloud at whether they
were hungry) but not a trace of chicken....Not even the bones....For
days afterwards we waited for the smell to tell us where they had
hidden the evidence but we've never smelt anything
