Speaking of hungry cats

Victor Martinez - 14 Sep 2005 13:27 GMT Fez has been pestering me for an hour, claiming he's starving. Thing is, wet food was served an hour ago, but Fez much prefers kibble. But he's not getting any. At least until he eats some wet food. That's my intention, anyway, but his other daddy often breaks down and gives "poor hungry Fezie" some kibble to eat. Sigh. I tell him 'if these were human kids, would you feed them french fries without them eating their veggies first?'. He pretends not to listen... but I think he rather enjoys being the "good" daddy and let me be the enforcer.

I'm always the one to take the cats to the vets, and to take them to the cattery when we go on holiday. Ade always makes a point of 'rescuing' them from the cattery.

It's the funniest thing, they know when he's going to work That's when they start the zoomies. When he *leaves* the house, that's when they dig in the trash, dig in my plants, rip up papers, shred the comforter, break the blinds, knock coffee cups off my tables, etc. I have monsters, but I love them dearly.

Why, not getting the crunchies is how Fezzie *knows* he's starving. ;) Just like being able to see space at the bottom of the dish is how Stinky knows *he* is starving. ;)

If it came in a tin, he wants a different flavour or brand served from a pouch, or a foil tray and vice versa. "Aw I only had this chicken and kidney in gravy pouch LAST WEEK!! and it's too soon for me to eat it again.. also there is the same crunchies in my bikkie bowl that I had yesterday.." He gets so cross about it that it makes me laugh. He will wowl that he's very, very hungry, despite his and kitty's bowls having nice meaties in and another with bikkies. I tell him he isn't hungry if he doesn't eat what's there and to be quiet. He can't believe I don't understand! That's when he gets on the arm of the chair behind me if I am sitting at the computer and puts his front legs round my waist and very eversoslightly, almost imperceptibly extends his claws. LOL.
That's when I tell him "absolutely not.."
Kitty must think he's crazy. Having lived in the out for years she will eat almost anything. If I happen to serve a food that she particularly likes she will start to purr loudly while she's eating it. This always makes me melt.

I can't get over this. I remember when he got all excited when we opened the garbage pail because he figured /maybe/ these nice people might let him eat their garbage sometimes... He's a feral. He thinks paper towels soaked in bacon grease are food. And he's turning up his nose at the stuff in his bowl as "not food" and crying for Hill's?
I went out and bought them Hill's. They barely ate anything for two days, all four of them. They're back to normal now that there's quality in their bowl...

I think a theme is developing! I've noticed myself that a perfectly well-fed (possibly even a little over-fed) cat who hasn't missed a meal in her life except just before spaying can act as though she's on the verge of immediate starvation because she can see the bottom of the bowl between the pieces of food.
I try to feed them a variety of food so as to avoid the picky 'I only eat Brand X tuna' reaction, but I've had some failures, often with the most expensive foods! They will eat the two or three most common brands I buy, and Mandy adores Fancy Feast, which like most canned food, almost invariably upsets her stomach. But pick up something rather pricy that's highly recommended as the most healthy catfood around, and there's a good chance they'll ignore it. While, of course, complaining loudly that they haven't eaten in MONTHS, and are about to drop dead of starvation!

> Brand X tuna' reaction, but I've had some failures, often with the most > expensive foods! They will eat the two or three most common brands I buy, Yup. Same here. They don't really like the super premium foods (those made with human-grade ingredietns) and they love the stuff with by-products (though we don't buy that anymore, since Basho's brush with IBD). We buy only one brand of wet food now, Nutro, 3 of the gourmet flavors and two of the pouch flavors. The kibble they get is the new Innova stuff without any grains (excellent for carnivores!) plus SD oral care as occasional snack.

As grumpy as she can be about petting, she certainly loves her food/ Unless she's recently eaten a collared dove.

It sounded so funny, because the purr would come out louder every time she opened her mouth to chew, so she would go puRRR<gnaw>PUrrrpuRRR<gnaw>PUrrr. Oh, I wish I'd recorded that sound too. Nikki's normal purrs can be heard at http://www.possibleplaces.com/Nikki_Purr/

Gabey8 - 14 Sep 2005 15:43 GMT Have you tried mixing some kibble into his wet food?
We had the opposite problem with Misty (RB). Once she got some canned food, she decided to ignore dry food for a while. We got advice from the vet to mix dry food into the wet food.
The first few times we did that, she just ate around the kibbles and left them in the dish. Then she must have decided it wasn't worth the extra aggravation, and just ate everything: kibble, canned food, the works. She also resumed eating her regular dry food supply, and all was right with the world. :o)
Of course, this was the same cat who LOVED bran cereal. Loved. Inhaled. Couldn't get enough of. I found this out by accident when we were at the end of the box of cereal and there were lots of little bran shreds left in the bag. As an experiment, I gave them to Misty, and she ate them all.
Next time she was refusing her canned food (mixed with kibble, lol), for the heck of it I sprinkled some crumbled bran on it. She ate everything. She did the same the next time I sprinkled bran onto some canned food/kibble that she was ignoring.
I posted a few days ago that Misty was good at connecting cause-and-effect. It only took her two instances of having bran added to her dinner to figure out how to get bran ALL the time. She promptly started refusing canned food that didn't have the crumbled-bran garnish.
For the next ten years or so, every day she got canned food mixed with kibble, with crumbled bran on top. Spoiled? Naaah. Not Misty. It was the attention due to her as the Feline of the House. ;o)

It was the > attention due to her as the Feline of the House. ;o) Chatterley (RB) was the best mouser we ever had. When she caught her first one after she adopted us, she looked at us, clearly wanting to be followed. Once she had her staff, she ran to the kibble bowl, dropped the mouse on top, and looked sternly at us.
