[OT] Florida Purrs

Purrs once again for all in the state of Florida. This morning's
forecast path for Hurricane Ivan (currently a stronger storm than
either Charley or Frances) has the state in the center of a
south-to-north track. They're already doing mandantory evacuations in
the Florida Keys.

Purrs also to everyone in the Caribbean who've already met Ivan, and
to those in Jamaica who are about to.

Adding my purrs to this.  They don't know where [if] Ivan will actually make
landfall in the U.S. but this storm is a bigger one than Frances ever
dreamed of being.  My parents live on an island off the coast of SC so it's
always a guess whether or not they need to head inland, too.

I hear they are out of ice, gas and things like boards and tape for windows
in Florida.  Gotta call my friend Cyn and make sure she's ready for this.
Bad season down there.

Yeah, sending purrs down this way, too.  Poor people in Florida!  My mom's
been very lucky so far in Sarasota during the first 2; hope her luck hold
out for this one, too.

Amen!!  They've had more than their share.  Purrs aplenty coming
for all in Ivan's  path, anywhere.  (This is the first time I have NOT
regretted moving away from Florida, where I lived for over 20 years
without much incident.)

Just a ditto, but I truly hope the storm weakens and does not add to
the heartbreak and frustration in Florida.

Purrs and hugs for all of you in Florida.  Any word about Crackles and
her humans?  How are the rest of you Floridians doing?  Do you need a
place to cut and run to?  I don't have a lot of room, but I'm willing to
share.

I'm worried about them too. I can't imagine how things can be very good. I
bet they don't even have access right now. Very worried. :(

I echo those purrs!  I feel so for those people!

May all wishes result in little harm and damage.
My irony is moving to Tampa in 1981 and not experiencing a hurricane
first-hand (TG) tho my 90yo aunt did stay with me after being a DP from
Homestead in, yes, 1992 and the March "no-name" storm, when, early 90s?

Charley threatened to come "up the throat" of Tampa Bay before veering
inland, Frances (barely missed), and now the direst projections for
Ivan, unless it veers from the cone projection.  My house has been under
contract through these and, worse, Katie's clowder and house.  It gives
this Cats With Hands cartoon an unintended edge:

I've got in-laws and two of my best friends in Florida.  Thank
goodness they're doing OK so far.  Maybe this will teach them to leave
LA with its occasional earthquakes for Florida with its storms.

Seriously though, I second Jeanne's thoughts.  Purrs for all in Ivan's
path.

Regards and Purrs,

I've been through both earthquakes and hurricanes.  Would have to go with
hurricanes if I had to choose.  There is just something about the ground
under your feet moving....

My current temp assignment involves calling suppliers for a good deal
of my day [for the most part, I don't mind. I do object to the ones I
have to call half a dozen times just to find out if the order went
out!], and one gent in Florida commented that he thought hurricanes
were easier to cope with, because you get advance notice of those.
Earthquakes are a surprise package.

Many people would be surprised to hear we sometimes get earthquakes in west
Tennessee.  The New Madrid fault runs from Illinois down to Marked Tree,
Arkansas.  The last major quake formed Reelfoot Lake around the turn of the
20th century.  I hear tell the Mississippi ran backwards (I take that with a
grain of salt).  But in 1976 I remember being literally thrown off my feet
when the last one measuring anything worth noting hit here.  Quite an
experience.  At least with a hurricane you get some warning.  I was just
walking down the hall and got thrown into the doorway.  Went wait a
minute... why is my lamp swaying?  Why am *I* swaying?  Oh Geeeeeeze, it's
an earthquake!

I was born in California and lived there twice.  Had to move to Tennessee to
experience an earthquake - go figure.

Ask me why I don't have anything hanging over my bed or my sofa. <G>

Purrs for all who need them.

There are two reasons I prefer hurricanes.  Well, maybe three reasons.
First, we only have a big earthquake in Southern California about once
every 20 years.  Those poor people in Florida and thereabouts get
several hurricanes a year.  Second, I like the fact that there is no
warning.  With a hurricane, you usually have plenty of time to get
scared.  With an earthquake, by the time you get around to being scared,
it's over.  The possible third reason is that I'm a native Californian
and I'm used to earthquakes.  I don't even feel anything under about a
4.5.

Actually, Reelfoot Lake was formed by the series of major quakes
along the New Madrid Fault in late 1811 and early 1812, not in the
early 20th century.  That series of tremors is estimated to have been
the most powerful earthquake in US history (there may well have been
stronger quakes in the past, before Europeans arrived).  I have read
that the earthquake caused damage as far away as Boston,
Massachusetts.

Geologists estimate that there is a greater than 50% chance of a
major quake occurring by the mid-21st century, since the many small
quakes since 1812 haven't been enough to relieve all of the stored-up
stress along the fault.  I live in Nashville, 180 miles or so east of
the fault, in a brick-veneer house (brick outside, wood-frame
inside), and chose shortly after I bought my house to take out an
earthquake rider on my homeowner's policy.  Whenever the big one
finally comes, I don't expect my house to be destroyed, but I do
expect it to need repairs.

Purrs for all in Ivan's path. It's been a bad year this year, global
warming must be at least part of the reason.
