So I'm sitting here whining to myself ...

Hi All,

So I'm sitting here whining to myself that I seemed to have gotten
relatively few follow-ups to my last two stories.  I knew that I had
satisfied myself with them by  the time they were finished, but where
were the precious add-on articles telling me how full of pathos was
the story of Puss Puss' year on the streets as an old bag lady.  Where
were the kind words remarking on my exposition of the tricks of my
Smokey man who'd prefer to get picked up than leap to the top of a
counter on his own?  Whine! Whine! Whine!

And all this whining on a day when the keeper of a web page of cat
stories asked if I would consent to have my story of Smokey as the
bos'n of the good ship Mouser published on his web page.  Jeeeeezzz -
some people are hard to please.  The webmaster already has some
stories up from one among our number.  Several of Jill Mcquown's
articles grace the web site too.  You can see it at
http://blakjak.com/sty_menu.htm
My stories should be up in a day or two, but hopefully you've already
seen them.

But seriously folks -- no, really -- a friend and true Net Ghod from
another newsgroup told me long ago the some of his best stuff goes
begging for a follow-up or a complimentary email.  He warned me to
expect the same.  I know this has been discussed in another thread,
but let me say it again, as much to remind myself as to counsel anyone
else.  If you're happy with the story, publish it and feel satisfied
that it will likely be enjoyed by most of those who read it.  If you
garner any compliments, that's a bonus, not a payoff.

Well, now I've made myself feel better.  You'd think an adult would
find that easy.  Right!

Regards and thanks for putting up with me,
O J

Ha!   I know the feeling!!!  Even earlier this year when I posted
something very important to me and thought was good, response was
nearly zilch.  I was so miffed, I ignored the group for over six
weeks.  Was I missed?  Nope.  Though I've been active here for nearly
seven years, there was not even a "whatever happened to....?"
Humph!!!  Talk about an inane, infantile reaction!!  I'm mature enough
to know better but sometimes we do get a bit irrational.

That said, I'm guilty as charged of not responding to good stuff.
I've pretty much pared down replies to sending purrs when requested.
Better late than never, be assured your stories *are* enjoyed and
appreciated.  In fact, I've saved those two you mentioned.  I'm glad
you wrote this - from now on I'll follow my better instincts and let
folks know their efforts are not in vain.   Thanks.

No! I read it! I loved it! I hardly ever comment on stories though I love them.
I try to always respond to purr requests. But it seems like I am always
blabbing on here about something or other, and sometimes afraid somebody's
going to say, "You can shut up now."

Guess this pretty well describes my current postings tread. When I
first started with the group last year, I posted several original
stories, but have sort of tapered off. Now I usually respond to purr
requests, but haven't really written any new stories. I read the
stories, but usually only respond with a sort of "that reminds me
of..." instead of commenting on how good the story may or may not be.
Probably wrong to do it that way, since as CatNipped said, you need to
give the story writer some little positive feedback if you want them
to continue to contribute.

As for my own meager contributions with original stories, I don't
really look for positve feedback. I can spend all day at work thinking
about the silly things one of the cat did, and how to tell the story.
That's where I get the payoff, not from the comments of the readers.
These days I still get a little concerned if there's no comment at
all, but am happy with just a couple positive comments.

I think I did, although briefly, comment on the Puss Puss story - it was
very poignant.  But I have been remiss about commenting on all the wonderful
stories that have been posted here, and do apologize.  It is very important
to give positive feedback if you want to see a behavior continue - a basic
fact of human nature.  I will try to be much more diligent in mentioning the
fact that I very much enjoy reading a good story, especially about cats.
Where else can you go on the 'net to find these gems??

Hi All,

Sorry about the three mixed up messages.  I was  re-reading the
article and decided to troll myself for carrying on that way.  I
changed the 'email address' and 'reply to' fields, but forgot to
change the 'name' field.  Duh!!

I still think I deserve to be trolled for carrying on that way.  I
tried to cancel the messages, but screwed up and resent them.  If your
server did cancel the messages, just forget you saw this.

Hey OJ - and all others who take the time to post interesting stories
and tales. Just wanted to add my 2p's worth! I don't post very much
anymore, but have been around these cat groups since 1996. I know that
if I start posting much again, it'll be back to the 2 hours a day I used
to spend when I first discovered these groups, so I just have to stay in
the background so I can get on with making a living ;-) BUT I do read
every post, and please be reassured that all the stories are read and
appreciated, purrs are sent when needed, and people's absence is
noticed. I'm sure I'm not the only semi-lurker who does the same :-)

Oh dear, I'm sorry.  When I log on, there are usually something like
140 new messages, and I can't possibly repond to all.  But that
doesn't mean I don't read or appreciate.  Plenty of times I post
something I think is a scream, and there's no response.  I guess it
depends on many variables.

Eh, if I ever grow up completley I give full permission to anyone to slap me
silly with a soggy halibut.

I figure the sign of true maturity is to understand when its ok to act
totally immature. If I ever stop loving to swing high on swings, splash in
puddles, see things in clouds and blow bubbles in my milkshakes, then I may
as well be dead.

I hope to be splashing in puddles when I'm 93 (and wearing purple hats too).

Already got some of mine in there, like PP&M Loreena McKennit, Dylan,

talk about *weird*.

My weirdest?  The one thing about me that I rarely tell people about?
I was a member of a local branch of "Up With People"* in the
1960s/70s.  And I have a copy of "Up with People on Tour".  Heh.

Ginger-lyn

*Up With People was a national group that was put together with the
intent to prove there were good, well-scrubbed, clean,
non-dope-smoking American young people.  Heh.  They had small local
braches in various cities, who went around singing and dancing their
songs to nursing homes and farmers' meetings or whatever.  And yep, I
was one of 'em.  lol!

OK. Can't resist.

Music:
African folk music, African dance music, classical, American folk
music (i.e. "O Brother Where Art Thou" stuff), Nine Inch Nails,
Ango-Indian pop music (Bangra and suchlike), kd lang, Jeff Buckley,
Mozart, bad 80s pop, Hoodoo Gurus (an Australian band), Hunters and
Collectors (ditto), Regurgitator (ditto), TISM (ditto), Paul Kelly,
Norah Jones, James Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Simon and
Garfunkel, Paul Simon on his own, Jethro Tull, They Might Be Giants,
Violent Femmes, and I could go on but I chose not to.

... and I like insects, spiders, frogs, lizards, snakes *and* monkeys
/ apes (and cats, nach).

I am not yet 40 - there is a heap of wierdness to acquire over the
next half century.

Dave, who is looking over my shoulder and laughing, has just been
infected and has put Regurgitator's "I want to be a nudist" on the CD
player!  He is very tolerant to put up with my bizarre and eclectic
musical "taste" (although I would argue that his taste is just as
bizarre, but in a different dimension to me).

OK, I'll play too.

Music:  American Folk (I like "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" too), Aussie
country, didgeridoo music, barbershop, some Weird Al, Tom Leherer, Irish
Rovers, Clancy Brothers and an Alaskan performer named Bob Miller.  I
prefer animals with four legs or fewer, but like almost all of those,
along with snakes.

Movies:  The Green Mile, Galaxy Quest, both Shrek movies and both
Princess Diaries movies.

Actors:  Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman, Sean Connery and Harrison Ford.

Ginger-lyn was an "Up with People" person?  Kewl!  I used to have one of
their albums.

Three years ago I visited Australia for the first time, and fell in
love.  With the country, and especially the Red Centre.  Last year I
went back, and as I took the train out of Alice Springs, I felt as
though I were leaving my home, knowing I might never be back.

Actually, I guess it makes sense.  My physical home town and my
spiritual home town have a lot in common - well, except for size.

I was born in Los Angeles, which was named after a river which was named
after a woman.  The original name was El Pueblo del Rio de Nuestra
Senora la Reina de los Angeles (The town of the river of our lady the
queen of the angels).  It sits in the middle of the desert, has a very
low rainfall and often faces droughts.

Alice Springs was named after a spring which was named after a woman.
It sits in the middle of the desert, has a very low rainfall and often
faces droughts.

Both towns have a river which has very little water in it, except on
those rare occasions when there are heavy rains, at which time there is
flooding.

For almost two years now, almost every evening I eat at home, my evening
meal has consisted of a homemade chicken quesadilla and a salad.

That's probably enough weirdness for now.

Summer before last, my DH and I saw Jethro Tull in concert.  It was
one of the best I've ever been to.  I wore Levi's, a dk. blue tank
top, my cat ears, and long cat tail.  The guy standing directly in
front of us wildly played the air flute for pretty much the whole
concert, which was quite entertaining in itself, and about half way
through the show, Ian Anderson put down his flute and talked to the
crowd.  He made mention of his admiration of felines because of their
attitude.

that's a bit weird, considering I had never layed a tile in my life

Wot she said, and also *some* hip-hop, Eminem (I really tried hard not to

Gospel music, REM, Ry Cooder, Weird Al, Sisters of Mercy, Real Life, Kids in

Spiders you can keep, but the rest (if they don't bite) don't bother me.

If its not in the "3 for $20" bin, it ain't worth buying! (says she that
just hunted high and low for "Heartland" by Real Life (Aussie band).
Eventually I found it in an obscure on0line music shop in the USA, and
apprantly they *import* said CD from here - but do you think you can get
that CD in Australia anywhere? Not a chance! So I have to pay to import it
to the USA and then *back* to Australia. And it was still worth it - I have
after all been looking for it for 21 years!)

I've noticed that Weird Al has shown up in every single one of these
eclectic lists of music favorites that you all have been posting. Is
there some sort of connection? Something about Weird Al that appeals
to cat lovers, perhaps? (If this were a group of poodle lovers, I would

Is that the album that has "Send Me an Angel" on it? I like that song -
in fact, it's the only song of theirs I know! I have that song on an 80s
hits compilation CD.

That *is* a little insane. I'm glad you thought it was worth it, though!
I guess that's all that really counts.

Yup, thats them! But be careful, theres the original 1983 version of "Send
me an Angel", which is the one I want, but theres also a 1989 remix.

They had another hit here called "Catch me I'm falling" and then faded into
obscurity. But apprantly they were *huge* inthe USA, and now have a cult
following over there. Which is why I could get their first CD fromthe USA,
but not from here, even though *technically* they are an Aussie band.

Yes, I know both versions. I prefer the original also. Can't remember
at the moment which one I have on the compilation.

Hmm - I don't remember that song. At least the title doesn't ring a bell.

Aren't they called Reel Life, actually?

Not unless they've changed their name for the USA audience. They were
definately 'Real Life' here.

Ginger-lyn, Up with People is still around. The troupe came through here three
or four years ago and toured the shelter. And yeah, they are still poster kids
for non-dope-smoking American young people. :-)

lol -- I had no idea they were still around.

What was funny with my local branch was that, in my little town,
pretty much all the musical/creative/whatever types *were* the
dope-smoking ones, too ;-)

Yep, just like I was last year, and the year before that. :-P

PS - We've discussed this before, and the situation never changes. :)

PPS - Don't worry, I can't remember much of anything either. It's
amazing I've remembered this much!

Get outta here. You're not 49.  You couldn't be. You're going to have to sag
and wrinkle a little before you expect me to believe that.

Yup, the weight fills out the wrinkles, or at least that's what I tell
people.

I used to tell people I was ten years older than I am in order to get
them to say that I don't look my age.  It back fired on me, so now I
admit to being almost 49.

head she's 21 ;-)

Dear OJ and the rest of the group,

I want you all to know that I enjoy reading ALL your stories. I just wish
that I had more time to work on my catpage. As it is, I am incredibly behind
with adding new stories, I have about 300 to add!

So, if you'd like your own chapter on my website in the CAT PHILES section
(http://www.flippyscatpage.com/catphiles.html), please speak up!

Or if you'd like to add a story, poem, or anecdote to the catpage, please
email it to me directly - I will be happy to include it.

Purrs to all,

OJ, I always read your stories and enjoy them -- unfortunately sometimes I
put off replying
'cause Real Life intrudes (so rude of it!) -- I loved both your stories --
will try to do better!

Thank you all very much.  I hate to appear so needy so I used what, I
hope, was a little humor as a way to distance myself from being so out
front about it.

Hugs to you all.

Needy's good.  It's when you're desperate that we worry.

Pam S. also needful

I try to get on every day and love reading your stories and the stories
posted by others. I don't usually have time to post a reply tho. Please
don't feel that we don't enjoy the stories.

I agree with everyone. I try to read everything, although I can't
always. I always scan for requests for purrs and hate it when I learn
I've missed a need for purrs because it was bedded in a response to
another post unrelated to the purr request.  But I really do enjoy the
stories and anecdotes that everyone posts.
